  1. I suggest you check your policy no matter which company you are with. Many do not cover damage from a tank breakage unless it was an accident ie kid hit it with a hammer. If it breaks through no reason you can prove (in our case we suspect a stress fracture after a small quake) the damage will not be covered.

    Keeping NZ Fish?

When I set up a 3ft tank for marines, I just took containers to the beach and filled them up with water and gathered rocks and sand. I caught all sorts of critters from the pool then got the lot home and filled up the tank. Had an AquaClear filter running on it and nothing else. This tank went well except at the height of summer when room temp was 28 during the day and not much cooler overnight. Rock pools vary in temp as the tide comes in and cools it down regularly. The inhabitants do not like constant temps over 18C. Octopi are cool but hard to see as they camopuflage so well. They are also escape artists. They can escape through the smallest of spaces. Ours was fluffed to death by carpet when he escaped overnight and was already dried out by the time we found him in the morning

Tidal pool tanks are cool. We used to have one. If you ask questions here though, rather than PMs, everyone can see the answers and maybe try it themselves.

and most of the fish are too big to be kept in aquariums. You can pick up 2nd hand chillers for a few hundred dollars.
  6. You may find, unless you have a "premier" insurance policy that they will not pay for the damage. We found this out after a 250L broke and flooded the lounge, dining and kitchen areas. They only covered damage done from normal house water supplies like pipes bursting or tap problems. They did pay for the tank itself though
  7. Sometimes they will get a light brown dusting of algae on them as they get established and this goes away after a while.

Welcome to the forum acara. I have just returned from Borneo myself but didn't go scuba diving.
  10. Are they actually attaching themselves to the fish and killing them or do you mean your fish are dying in a tank that also has free swimming worms in it? What size is the tank and what is in it? What sort of filter do you have and what is your tank maintenance regimen?
  11. Hey TGWH, feel free to say hello when you are up here. 5789390
  12. Look at a deep pond. The fish bask in the sun during the day but if something startles them they dive down to the depths. The difference in temperature between the top and the bottom of a deep pond can be a large amount and they go from one to the other instantly with no adverse effects.
  13. What size are the fish you are transporting? Fish over 5cm I would put 1 to a bag and double bag it as well. Make sure you have a quarter water to 3 quarters air. Polystyrene gives extra protection against the box being crushed (do not expect couriers to read the "Fragile" label) and keeps the heat in. Transport overnight as it is safer. How far south is it going? It isn't that cold yet in Marlborough. Packing with newspaper will insulate well. Do not feed the fish for 2 days before transport. This stops them producing so much waste and helps keep the toxicity down.
  14. BNs either breed, or they don't. They can breed like mad for months, then stop for a few years, then start breeding again. Well, mine did anyway! Try getting another female. He might like her more Mine always bred in, or under, a log. The hole will be fine. The pots are fine in tanks too.
  15. Nothing wrong with those temperatures. My pond fish live in hotter than that over summer.

    Hello everyone

Welcome. I too tend to get carried away looking at the aquariums in the background of TV programmes and forget to listen to the dialogue

  20. She might be producing new and absorbing them constantly. I don't keep them myself so am not talking from experience. If the fish is eating well and behaving normally then I wouldn't be concerned, otherwise I would attempt to squeeze her myself.
  21. They do get fat with eggs. If there is no male she will absorb them eventually.
