    Mollies, just ID

I haven't kept mollies for years but the sailfins I remember had much larger fins than those pictured. Quite possibly they are hybrids, who knows?

    Mollies, just ID

Most mollies are Poecilia sphenops. The different colours are just morphs of the same species. You can also get lyre tailed versions. There are also sailfin mollies P velifera.

    Pond pH

As far as I know the barley straw gets rid of green water, not cyano. It will get rid of fry food too Dixon1990 but they are quite a size now and able to eat flake food. There seems to be a shortage of daphnia this year. I usually have plenty but not this year for some reason. :-?

    Pond pH

Everyone seems to be out of peat at the moment so it will have to wait. I threw in some JBL CleroPond today. It says it quickly produces crystal clear pond water and eliminates green water discolouration. We will see. I was going to add barley straw extract but the shop sold the last one yesterday. Seems I am not the only one with green water at the moment but with the sun and heat lately I am not surprised. There seemed to be a number of products to remove algae but I chose one that specified green water (and it was cheaper ). It was also the right amount to add the whole container full so no measuring required 8) It warns not to use if your water is under 7pH as it can cause a drop in pH so it will be interesting to see if mine drops from the 8+ it is currently :-? Will keep you posted! :bounce: Just checked pond temps. Paddling pool filled at the weekend is 26C (same as air temp which is finally dropping) and big pond is 23C
  5. Only 28 here today with a strong nor wester
  6. It will make no difference at all! The heaters only turn on if the tank gets below the set temperature. Turning the heaters off will not stop the tank heating up to room temperature. You need to cool the tank or the room. Try turning off the lights and removing the lid (if you do not have fish that like to jump out or cats or kids that like to jump in) Blow a fan across the water surface or drop in a frozen slikka pad, or 2L bottle of frozen water.
  7. You are right ryanjury. I thought they were just colour morphs  Should have checked before I posted
  8. I should think fish are like humans, some can cope with higher temps than others. Try and get the tank temp down and add extra oxygen.
  9. Because the difference is the colours. If you mix the two many of the fry will not have as clear colouring as either parent (like mixing paints)

    Goldfish newbie

Hi and welcome. If you plan to keep goldfish, especially comets, rather than a bigger tank (save that for tropicals ) why not build a pond? Goldfish need large tanks as they are very messy fish and produce a lot of waste. Comets are fast swimmers and do better in a pond where they can swim well.

    Hi from Wanganui

Hi and welcome. Some pics of your tank, and the inhabitants, in the saltwater section would be good 8)
  12. We don't have any fixed cameras here in Marlborough but we do have the mobile ones.
  13. What is the water temperature? It was 30C in ChCh today and I suspect a lack of oxygen as the water temp rose.
  14. Our official temp was 30C. It is now 28.5C but I think it will be another night sleeping with the aircon going
  15. We were 29C yesterday. It is 31.9C outside my house at the moment. Spent the day in Nelson where they had a nice cool sea breeze keeping it cooler.

  17. Grant's preferences would be (not in any particular order) Samsung, Panasonic or Sony. Depending where you are, if Freeview is available via UHF, get one with an integrated tuner to get good high definition reception. If you don't have Free view vbia VHF save some money and buy one without the integrated tuner as you won't get high defiiition for some years yet. He prefers LCD due to lower power consumption and less heat generated than plasma. Plasma can also cause intereference on some radios. Plasma is arguably a better picture but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. LCDs are geneally lighter so easier to hang off a bracket or wall etc if required. All HD TVs have HDMI inputs, even cheap ones and lots of other inputs and outputs for easy connection of other gear. If you are in to HD movie playback see if you can do a deal on a blue ray player or maybe, with Sony, a PS3 which will also play back blue ray and it's often a very cheap way to go.

  20. My work day is now over (if you don't count having to come home, cook dinner, clean up etc etc etc). We had fun reading through some reports of patients who ended up at the hospital over the Christmas break. One man injured himself "falling off an inflatable object". This had us speculating Another fell twice and knocked himself out after consuming 2 bottles of homebrew whiskey in 1 day  The day was worse since we hit over 28C today 8) It is reading 30.1C here at home at 5.38pm
  21. Not too busy to be surfing the forum though I see
