  1. I can't invite others! There wouldn't then be enough left for Grant's sandwiches! No point having silverside if there isn't enough leftovers for sammies.
  2. ... Or "slow cooker" as the new fangled ones are called nowadays. Never use your crockpot when you are actually going to be inside the same house as the crockpot while it is cooking! It is fine if you set it to start as you leave for work. You come home to a lovely smelling house and a cooked meal. If you are home during the day you have to suffer smelling the stuff cooking ALL DAY!!!! Boy I'm hungry :-? (New Word has silverside on special this week so guess what we are having for tea) :bounce:
  3. I get excited when I wake up in the morning too. Proves I am still alive  How kind of them to put the eggs somewhere where it was easy to get such a nice photo!
  4. Hard to tell when looking at fluffy stuff in a fluffy pic Fluff, often looking like it is perched on top of the skin, is often a secondary infection caused by a wound underneath. It may, or may not, need some sort of anti-fungal treatment. I know of some who discovered that when they manged to pull the fluff off, found the fish had actually healed nicely underneath and nothing further needed to be done. Are you able to catch the fish for a closer look and gently see if the fungus is easily removable? If it is, you may have to treat the underlying infection. I wonder if it originally bashed its head getting stuck in a tight spot at some point and that is how it got the original damage.
  5. As said, no need to clean out a canister filter until the flow rate slows. Mine goes 6 - 12 months between cleans

    New tank

Personally I like under gravels, but only in small tanks (say 2ft or less) as I don't think they are good enough for a larger tank - but can be used in conjunction with other types of filters. When you say you need a pump, everyone seems to assume you mean a filter. Do you mean a pump to run the under gravel? The canister filters other have mentioned all have a pump built in. A pump on its own is not filter.
  7. A message stays in the outbox until the recipient opens it. If it was still there after several hours it meant they had not yet checked for messages.
  8. When I set up my Jebo 819 it ran for 12 months before I cleaned it out (and only as I was curious to see what was in it, not because the water flow had diminished significantly). It was then another 6 months before the next clean and I haven't cleaned it since. I have a heavily planted, lightly stocked 280L tank with small to mid sized community fish. Since some are breeding the water can't be too bad :-?

    Newbie here

Hi and welcome Pegwood. We seem to have a large number of members who also have quite a range of other animals in their homes, as well as fish. A lot of cat, dog and bird lovers here. I would like to suggest you add your location to your profile as, sometime down the line when you have a question, it may help if everyone can see where you are from. To do this you need to add it to your profile. This can be found under the User Control Panel at the top right of your screen view. This will show your location under your name every time you post.
  10. I have two 4ft fluorescent lights (double) that are in reflectors and they just sit on top of my glass lid. The reflectors are old and are deeper than the tubes so when sitting on the glass, it is the reflectors on the glass, not the tubes. If you don't know what I mean I can take a pic if required. They were bought from Mastertrade and the tubes are just bright white or daylight.
  11. I would have to sit down, print all the accounts out (we get them online) and average them out as ours are read every second reading with estimates in between. The two differ wildly! eg April was read at 103 controlled units and 607 24hr units. May (estimated) was 250 controlled units and 910 24 hr. This meant our April bill was $190 but the next was $295. The next bill ought to be way down as they assumed we would be home when we weren't
  12. It can be stressful can't it? Mine was stolen, along with the bag it was in. A very stressful time having to cancel and replace cards etc. Luckily I rarely carry actual money so no problem there. The thing I missed most from the whole lot nicked was my hairbrush. I have not been able to find a new one as good

  21. I would be happy to do so if I also had permission to publish it in the Aquarium World magazine (with pics) :bounce:
  22. My mother got upset when we were at Wharf Aquatics in the UK. They had a stack of crickets, all madly chirrupping away. It was very noisy! When she realised they were being sold as food she said no wonder they were complaining so loudly
  23. But that describes Auckland most days doesn't it? It is -1C here at the moment. I think we are supposed to go down to -3 tonight. Should be a gorgeous day tomorrow though.
