  1. She mentioned having the tank up and running for about a year, so I would say it is pretty much cycled. Anyway welcome to the forums Natalie! Everyone on here is a bundle of knowledge so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. If you already have your discus breeding then I would say you are doing a pretty good job. Well done and good luck with the discus.
  2. Riccia Fluitans- note to self (must write that down) I haven't heard of that one before, is it easy to get a hold of?
  3. What about fixed plants like Java fern and Java Moss?
  4. I'll give you $10 for 20 guppies once a month.
  5. Planting the tank is the only solution that I can come up with!! the problem is the two fiesty oscars and the ever hungry siam tiger tend to tear them to shreads. Do you have any suggestions on what plants they are likley to leave alone??
  6. What is the best means of fertilization without fertilizing the algae at the same time??
  7. My tolerance for this smothering little slimy varmit has come to an end. Three days ago I spent half a day cleaning my newly established 5' tank because it was completley coated in an unsightly brown algae. And it has come back in avengence. I thought it may be due to insificient lighting so I am using the appropriate lighting and it seems to be thriving even more. To me the contributing factors could be: There are no plants in this tank ( exept for the brown slimy ones of course). There is no direct sunlight, but plenty of daylight (I do not want to have to move this tank because the floor is supported for it's weight and there aren't to many places it can go.) The substrate is from the Waimakareri river bed and there may be traces of minerals contributing to the the growth of Algae. The pores from the previous bloom need to be destroyed before trying to prevent it from coming back. I need as much input from you guys as possible on prevention, possible causes, cures etc... you name it I want to know!! There are over one million different species of algae, and I just want to kill ONE. So the war is on, the ALGAE has seen it's last days in my tank. 8)

    hi all

Hi Anne, and welcome to the fish forums in New Zealand. Polypterides? are they a kind of Birchir fish thats rather aggressive?
  9. Vallis is vulnerable to a condition called chlorosis that makes it rot it is usually caused by lack of Iron.
  10. If you don't have lighting Alan your tank will fill with brown algae quite rapidly. So I found out thinking I might save on power not turning the lights on in my unplanted tank.
  11. Nice pics Ballistic, thank you for sharing them.

    Mono

Hi Mono, Kiwi and Mars!! I hope you enjoy the fishroom, there is alot of experienced aquarists in here so don't hesitate to ask if you need to know anything!!
  13. The chances are very slim that it is hole in the head, it is more than likely just a scrape, and the white stuff is it's protective coating of slime healing it. 8)
  14. Nothing to worry to much about Bilbo, I have thousands of the little critters in my tank due to the oscars messy eating habits and nothing to clean up after them. just make sure you keep the tank clean quite regularly and it will keep the population at bay.
  15. would you get the same result if you were to place a heater in a overhead filter system?
  16. Archers are a brackish fish, they need precise water conditions and importers tend to steer away from such a fish. You don't tend to see many brackish fish around. The only ones I have seen are a couple of scats and an orange chromide or two. I would love to set up a brackish tank with some scats, some monos and a couple of archers. Puffers are also a unique brackish fish. But to answer your question they generally grow to around 8" and would be best in a group of about 6 or more so you wouldn't want a tank any smaller than 55 gallons. The cost? I couldn't tell you.
  17. http://dynamic25.protu.no/pictures/121/ ... n-made.pdf I hope you enjoy!! 8)

    Gravel

Try reading this forum posted a couple of weeks ago http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=2616 It should tell you what you need to know.
  21. The only ones I'd be cautious about are guppies and danios(bettas have a taste for thier fins) and other labyrinth fish such as gouramis they just don't seem to get along. And female bettas are a big gamble, if they are to small and not ready to breed when he is he will kill them. The other thing to watch is the flow from the filter, the tend to like very slow moving water and if the current is to strong the will clamp up thier fins and become very unsociable.
  22. I've had a huge outbreak of these little fellows and I mean a HUGE outbreak, millions of them. I know how they got there but I don't know how to get rid of them. I had a minor outbreak a couple of months ago and they disappeared but now they've come back with avengence. They are starting to irritate the oscars a little so I need to get rid of them. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
  23. Just testing posting a pic here goes
  24. It all comes down to peoples personal opinion on what the best equipment is. And my opinion would be that Jager stainless steel heaters are the best. 8)
