  1. couldn't you just put in a non return valve rather than going to all that trouble??
  2. I'm sending my tank away to be drilled and am after some feedback. Am I better to have it drilled for 2 overflows or 1?? and is it a good idea to have the returns drilled also especially if I'm planning on having an opentop tank?? Are there any issues with having drilled returns that I should consider before doing so??
  3. ZooMed flouresants are suppoosed to have a lifespan of 10 000 hours is this realistic?
  4. Can anyone tell me the lifespan of the arcadia marine blue and marine white bulbs??
  5. I've been a busy Boy with moving house house, building new house etc... so plans were put on hold for a while. We are moving into the new house in about 9 -10 months time so I thought I might get things started while I have a bit of spare time. I'm after some equipement! so if anyone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated. What I am after at the mo is A HOB skimmer, Deltec prefered but will consider others powerheads Test kits And spare rock or sand would be good If you can help me out on any of these items please PM me.
  6.  I like the 620, Molded corners, modern, fully enclosed. My wife would laugh at the idea of a square old 3 foot glass tank in the middle of our designer home.
  7. It's the same plec that I have at home, It was also sold to me as a leopard plec. But upon further investigation I discovered that it is a gold spot plec, very similar to the red spot but with nicer colourings that last into adulthood unlike the red spot, they, like the red spot grow alot larger than your common plec. Hope that is of some help.
  8. Any ideas on drilling? my contacts only have drill presses and need a flat panel to drill but the tank cant be disassembled so it needs drilling as it is.
  9. Hi guys!, the plans for my 5 foot system have been put on hold for a while due to lack of funds and lack of time, "you know, the usaul stuff". But mainly because we plan on moving in the next year or so and it would be more sensible to set the system up then. But in the mean time I thought I might try my hand at a much smaller system. I'm thinking about giving my freshies some freedom in the five footer for a while and converting thier two footer into a small reef. It is an Aqua one AR620 all in one system, here is a link to areef done in the same tank http://www.aquahobby.com/tanks/e_tank0404.php , if you get time check out his website he has some amazing reefs, well worth a look. I can't really consider this as a nano system because i will be running a four foot sump with about 60 litres in the main tank and approx 180 litres in the sump with a submersible return and in sump skimmer. I don't have these items yet so any suggestions or if anyone has some surplus equipement give us a yell. Things I haven't planed yet is the plumping and circulation so ideas on this would be great. Lighting will be two 20w flouros on a timer with a moon light(maybe) Filtration will be about 50 kilos live rock on a DSB in the sump and about 15 kilos in the main system. The big thing bugging me at the moment is the decision to drill or not to drill. Pros- A drilled overflow is heaps more effective and reliable than a syphon overflow which has the risk of flooding if the syphon is broken. Cons- It takes up alot of already limited space. Drilling can be risky causing fatal damage to the tank. Some thoughts on this would help the decision process. If you have any questions please ask and any input would be greatly appreciated. :-? :-?

    zebra plecs

Good luck on finding one to buy there haven't been any available for a long time.
  11. I got mine from a lfs down here called Organisms, they specialise in exotic and tropical plants.
  12. Heres a link to some photos of the tanks at ADA, they are awesome, weel worth a look. http://www.aquahobby.com/tanks/e_tank0412a.php
  13. We have had discussion on these pumps before try this thread www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=3366&start=0
  14. Try searching for siamese tigerfish or Datnoides microlepis
  15. I have him in a 5' tank to which he is the sole occupant, he will kill anything I try adding to the tank. He did get on with a fire eel for a while and I could probably get away with a large pleco. The only other option that I could get away with is maybe add another 3 or 4 tigers of a simular size. If you want tankmates for your tiger, you have to raise them together as juveniles otherwise you end up in the situation that I am in.
  16. He is about 3 years old now and about 12 -13" long, Tigers have a huge growth spurt at a young age and reach about 80% of full size in thier first 3 or 4 years.
  17. I have a large borneo tiger, he is a fussy eater but eats very well. I only feed him once every 2-3 days. he usually eats a dozen or more shrimps a feed or a dozen or so pieces of beef heart about half an inch square. On the odd occasion i will feed him live earthworms but he will only eat these if he is hungry. I do not feed him live feeders.
  18. I have noticed alot of people asking about carpet foreground plants. I use a plant called "Echinodorus tenellus" pygmy chain swordplant. It is great, I bought a single plant and withen 2-3 months it had carpeted the foreground of my tank. It is only about 3-5 cm high and sreads very fast by way of of baby runner plants. I think this plant is ideal if your going for that carpeted lawn like look.

    Miracle Mud

How many sediments have you seen with such high readings of iron and aliminium and of what benefits are these to a reef?
  21. Bettas have been knowen to last up to 10 weeks in those little bags, they are amazing little fish.
  22. Very very nice, well done!

    Miracle Mud

The most common thing you here in debates over miracle mud is "how is something derived from the mountains going to be of any benefit to a reef"
