  1. when I had fry I was doing a little WC a day or every few days..... because I had the words of Alan resounding in my mind 'feed a little and do a little water change every time you go past' Fishguy, I was feeding golden pearls mostly and then when bigger they got microworms and other small processed food .. since these guys survived well with the adults they got moved back to the main tank when looking like mini adults and then they got a range of food. I thought it was better for them to be back in the group as the competition seems to make them more vigorous feeders. Maybe it wasn't the best thing to do. On closer looking today, some of the ex-fry are not so bad. Just one that has a hollow tummy, the rest are just on the small side. Though they were very slow to grow. I seem to have 3 or 4 males and 1 female. Anyway ....will see what happens next.
  2. :sml2: Do you think it's reasonable to assume that my CPDs are past breeding quality or are inbred? All the fry I raised from the original batch have turned into adults significantly smaller than their parents, and as I said before, the pretty male seems to be wasting away. It's not from lack of food, if anything I overfeed them from time to time. My thought is that if no fry emerge now the adults are gone I will try a new fish (cherry barbs) and not bug these guys anymore. They are very hard to catch in among the twisted val as well.
  3. new slimline garage breeding tanks... there is just enough room to walk between the car and the tanks. Notice how my husband added one of those foam noodles to the edge of the shelf so we can't bash the car door :sml2: this is my caserole copycat tank. I had some CPDs in here for a few days, they've just gone home to the main tank again. Am not sure if anything was going on, though they seemed relaxed. My small male with the good anal fin markings seems to be wasting somewhat, don't think he will be doing much procreating.
  4. better still, keep it at Caryl's place so you can stop in to eat baked treats and harvest shrimp!
  5. how warm is your room? might be warm enough by itself to grow the shrimps at a not too fast rate :dunno:
  6. got 3 new friends...... :happy1: corydora loxozonus this is a movie........ click the pic... cory going a bit nuts to start with, then resumes tranquil activity
  7. I must say that I'm glad I moved the rasbora in here. While they didn't seem skittish in the loach tank, they seem yet more relaxed in among the twisted val and with other small companions. It might be almost a biotope even. It's nice to see the little orange guys mixed in with the others. I haven't seen much of Hoover the moth catfish lately, I hope he's ok and not sulking since his friend died.

    The What's Up? thread.

If ammonia and nitrate are good it suggests an infection like Sam suggests and there aren't tests that can find that sort of thing are there? If the water is still the same old water as when the fish weren't dying the usual test kit isnt going to provide answers. Maybe you should medicate the tank for the most likely reason given the symptoms, and see if that helps.
  9. He sits in the conservatory with his back to a brick wall which would otherwise be the exterior wall of the house, and the PC is in the next room, somewhere behind him. So yes I think that the line of sight is broken by the brick wall... which is made of many years worth of rotted wet leaves :sml2: . this bit will be a bit hard but we can do the rest of the testing thanks everyone
  10. Indeed, I had thought of that... hence why not yet filling the second tank yet. But Murphy's Law would suggest that until I fill the 2nd tank, the CPDs won't breed.....
  11. We are with Xtra. I will do the speed tests tonight and get my Dad to check his end. My husband used to frequently swear when the youtube thing he's watching drops out but it seems that these incidences have been fewer in the new house. Also when my Dad is skyping, he's sitting in the conservatory against a brick wall, PC in the next room. Do you think the bricks could be blocking the signal somewhat? Usually he goes all pixellated and then freezes, and the sound is moving at a different pace to his face. A bit of a comedy really, it's funny but irritating.
  12. moved house a week ago, lost 1 moth catfish a week later.... he or she lost colour, looked weak and clamped fins and then died next day. RIP Hoover 2. now in here I have the mosquito and dwarf rasbora, CPDs, danio erythromicron, golden bristlenose, 1 moth catfish... a host of minifish. this tank is under observation at present, I have a recurring issue with a few strands of long green hair algae in among the twisted val, which needs to be thinned out, and since moving there is a lot more light in the room. Have turned the lights down to a lesser time frame while I see what the extra light does. Other than that not much to report. The java ferns and anubias are doing well.
  13. Breeding project revisited at new house........ 1 x tank as above with 6 CPDs that went in there yesterday afternoon. Tried to catch a mixture of sizes in case the smaller younger ones are more fertile, though my male looks a bit on the skinny side. Have set the tank up like Caserole's - sponge filter, upturned breeding box with moss at one end and free space at the other. Gave them a feed yesterday, now I wait a few days and see what happens. 1 x empty cold water tank wondering if I should get some white cloud mountain minnows or wait and see what happens with the CPDs.
  14. I'd like to tap into the archives of the brains of the resident nerds.... I keep having trouble with Skype. I skype to my Dad in the UK every Sunday evening, and the connection keeps dropping out. I'm sure that it's been worse since he started using his iPad instead of the desktop PC - does that sound familiar to anyone? As far as my end goes, I've discovered I'm only 1.4km from the phone exchange, closest I've ever been, though I don't have an ADSL2+ modem, am still using the one I've always used. It's worse if I have my video turned on, sometimes I can keep the call up if I turn my video off and then he can just hear me. any advice or tips? :dunno:
  15. Thanks but I don't do C02, end of story, I'm a low tech tank person. Algae eaters are fine with me while they are doing their job.
  16. I'm thinking of getting some corydora and a couple more otos. I had pygmy corydora in here originally but they were very shy, now I think to get some bigger ones like peppered cories.
  17. cool I have set up my breeding tank now, will move in some hopefuls tomorrow. Will update my own thread and not hijack yours though :gigl:
  18. What about when we see the new fish lists from places like HFF, it seems as if the stores do get a varied shipment of fish and I think that is what Hovmoller is asking for, can some extras be tacked on to the side of one of those? Maybe HFF or another store could give us some info on how the process works?
  19. since I got 2 otos it hasn't been an algae problem  today I made a change in here, I moved the rasbora next door into the mini fish tank with the CPDs. Next I continue to ruminate over what to do next :smln:
  20. My loach tank has few or no snails at all, I rarely see any. If they are found, they do not live long. I don't think snails in a loach tank ever do well.
