  1. come and visit my ostracods!
  2. those are good bits of driftwood
  3. It's having a blackout for 3 days to give the algae another shock.
  4. I get a quarter of a cup of tank water in a cup, take my extend-o-net (tea strainer on a stick) and harvest out the bugs into the clean water. I know I look like a right weiro peering over the edge trying to see the bottom, none of these neighbours have ever asked me what I'm doing yet though. There is blanket weed in there so I make sure not to put any in the tank, though I doubt it would survive anyway. My bugtopia trough is topped up with old fish water and is sparkly clean when I haven't stirred up the bottom. There is oxygen weed growing well and I have just started some stargrass too. I think that there are so many bugs thriving in there that it can't be bad water or they wouldn't be alive.
  5. I probably wouldn't buy just one, I'd like to try to have an 'accidental' breeding in a species tank.
  6. what sort of snail? if they aren't ramshorns you could get a couple of dwarf chain loaches to clean them up they could come and live in my loach harem when you're finished 8)
  7. There is 1 licorice gourami left at HFF. In your investigations are licorice gouramis available for a while or was this batch a one off? At the end of the week I'm hoping HFF will have been able to get some mosquitoes in, and I will get about 10, which would make 14 total. Since they like the twisted val so much I thought I'd keep them in the CPD tank and either let the CPDs and erythromicrons continue to die off slowly (another is wasting), or sell the danios and just keep the mosquitos in there and see if they decide to breed. OR I'd move the CPDs and erythromicrons into this tank with a bottom dweller such as a pair of rams.
  8. I believe it is the law for rental properties these days. Not an RCD plug, an RCD socket. If it were a newer house or had had the cabling redone recently the distribution board would have been fitted with an RCD to cover everything but because it's all old, new sockets have to be RCD. If I buy the house and live in it myself, then I can make it as unsafe as I want, as long as I'm only killing myself and not the tenants Here you go, tidy cables
  9. I overheard advice being given to someone who was buying a discus today, he was told he should worm them every 3 months. Don't know what people think about that, but it could be useful if you haven't done it and they could be susceptible to worms. :dunno:
  10. I don't have an opinion on whether they would be bad or not, was just giving some options of other mini fish. Dwarf rasbora are very peaceful, they go a deep peach with some vegetation.
  11. Welcome back Bikbok clown killies or dwarf rasbora or mosquito rasbora or a few ember tetra or emerald dwarf rasbora (erythromicron danio)... all but the 3rd one are at HFF MR at the moment.
  12. The cables and plugs are annoying aren't they. Will see if I have an extension lead and can put them in the bottom of the tank stand, there is a shelf under there for it. All those tanks are connected to a single power point that I've run an extension lead under the carpet to it. Stupid old houses, there aren't enough of them and many are in dumb places. If the landlord does an inspection one day I'll ask if he knows someone who will do another outlet for me. I asked a registered electrician I know and he said because it's a rental property it has to be an RCD outlet which cost $175 for the socket alone. By the time I pay for his time, it would be a $250 power point. :an!gry
  13. this tank is now empty, all occupants moved to riverbed tank. Have put a piece of paper at the sunny end to block light and am doing a 3 day black out on the algae before I start thinking about who to put in here next and whether I should rearrange in any way.
  14. 3 new occupants this morning: 2 peppered cories and a fat dwarf chain loach. Peppered cories have settled in and have already started chomping about in the sand.
  15. thanks everyone, I'm really happy with it. I started fertilising the middle tank and it's greened up well over a week. Still need to work on the loach tank as it's getting too much light being the closest to the doorway. Luckily you can't see the brown algae from the photo I've found that the new tank being next to the doorway I can walk down the hall way and poke my head out to spy on the corydora without them noticing. So this morning I got to see all 4 swimming about in the current, scaling the sides and swimming about in their graceful wiggly fashion, very cute. I put some live bugs in there and a hikari wafer to see if I can tempt them to eat in public and it worked. Peppy and a loxo are chomping and there are less bugs. It's almost tempting to just get more corydora and leave the loaches where they are but I really made this tank for the loaches. Maybe I should get more peppered cories and leave the loaches at 5. :nilly: what to doooooooooo
  16. Corner shot Spot Peppy the peppered cory hiding under the anbuias. His colouring is very dark, he blends in very well. Full tank shot Tank corner Plants – anubias nana (nana and petite?), bolbitis, java fern, narrow leaf java fern, dwarf sagittaria, Christmas moss. I consider the moss and the bolbitis an experiment. Moss typically hasn’t done well in my lighting conditions and when I’ve attached it to wood but this tank is well lit from daylight for a lot of the day, and I’ve had success attaching plants to stone lately. Bolbitis wouldn’t live when I had it in the tank next door but then no java fern did very well until I put a 6500k bulb in with the 14000 one. If the bolbitis dies my plan is for more java fern of various kinds.

    The What's Up? thread.

I'd love to see Dorl/Caserole's tanks
  18. Layout now completed and the first occupants have moved in - 3 corydora loxozonus and 1 peppered cory. Total water capacity is 56 litres. Will give the corydora time to get used to it alone, then will add the dwarf chain loaches from my other tank tomorrow.
  19. yes go on, see if you get more bugs
  20. speaking of which, today I went to Muffin Break and bought a Brownie Delight..... it was supposed to be a chocolate brownie sandwiched with caramel in the middle but I felt like I was asking for a hash brownie with it having that title :sml2:
