  1. for those that ever want to get the Aquatic mix in wellington i have just found it at California Garden Centre, Palmers don't stock it.
  2. not this week - i got home and checked on the parents but the eggs we gone, my wife said they were there about 4pm today so something must have twigged for them to decide to eat them...bugger will have to try again next week
  3. Thanks suphew - i will try our local palmers and california but just in case they dont have it any chance you can find out the name of said company close to you ? yesterday i went and collected some new sand - its between 1mm and 2mm so i reckon it should be better than the east coast sand im currently using. oh and its green like the picture seems to make it look
  4. hmm noone in wellington know where to get it ? does anyone else around the country have any ideas on where i can get daltons aquatic mix ?
  5. does anyone in Wellington know where i can get some daltons aquatic mix from, ive just run down to the local warehouse and bunnings stores and neither have them. cheers Skip
  6. congrats on your spawn i think im going to have to watch the fish next week if they spawn again but its hard since the tank is in our bedroom and they seem to like doing it around dinner time... i have an incling that the girl was the smaller of the 2 on the right going by the pictures i posted and others comments but it would be nice to have confirmation, also confirmation that i dont have 2 girls would be good :bounce:
  7. fingers crossed they dont eat them then, although I'm so not setup for breeding discus - i guess we'll just see what happens
  8. i think mine like the night time too but the tank light is still on so not sure if they think its night time yet or not. i had to put a partition in my tank so the swordtails and neons dont get in there an eat the eggs while the parents are busy tail slapping and nudging each other away from the eggs.
  9. cool - 29C is what my temp is set at.... i hope they last 3 days - last time they were around for about 36hrs or so - then gone the next morning.
  10. yeah the one on the right does look bigger from what i can tell but the keep turning away from me and staying near the back of the tank not wanting to see cheers flosty - i hope they are not 2x girls, that would be disappointing, how long till wrigglers come along after laying?
  11. thanks P44 - they are awesome fish - so happy i got these 2 ok so it looks like the one on the right is the girl as it appears to have a longer vent, they keep spawing when im not in the room darn it ! tonight ive seen some tail slapping and lip locking. the boy seems to be really protective of the eggs and nudging her away from them. i assume this is normal. i think hes done it every time they have spawned. i assume fish dont have a complex for a small vent than the girls
  12. yippppeee 4 weeks running my discus have been laying eggs, but they keep eating them bugger it, i took some pics tonight so hopefully someone can ID the female and male ? this is a link to a large image so those on dialup dont click it it kinda shows the ovi thingies but the fish on the right appears to have a longer one than the other fish. http://203.97.252.11/fnzas/discus_pair.jpg here is a small version of the above image.
  13. have you spoken to Donna your local turtle lady she should be good for advice on the turtles since she has a backyard full of them
  14. discus planted tank - bigger the better too
  15. 1 week to the day my discus have gotten jiggy with it again it looks like some of the other fish managed to get in and eat some of the eggs but now I've separated the parents and the rest of the fish in the community tank. i noticed that one of the fish is probably fanning the eggs and nudging the other one away - is it normal ? and which one would be the female going by this behavior. cheers skip
  16. theres also animates in lower hutt just across the road from the hutt pet centre, and in porirua there is another "the pet centre"
  17. time for another tank however the handbrake has been firmly applied - if i could get the wife to approve and release the handbrake my motto is if it happens it happens if not then never mind - at least they appear to be happy in the tank
  18. bugger got home after work and the eggs have all been eaten.
  19. hmm something else must be taking a liking to them then - i had 9 - and over the last 3 nights i have been loosing 1 fish each night - the dead swordtails are just a mystery then but yeah cool that my discus are happy enough to bread for me
  20. over the last few days i have noticed that some newly bought neons have been disappearing, and i have lost 2 swordtails. I tested my water and everything looks normal, then this morning i checked on my discus and noticed they looked like that were laying eggs, on a closer look it would appear they have layed already much to my delight, could this be the cause of the dead and missing fish ? im not sure how aggressive discus are when looking after eggs etc
  21. thats awesome - how old are they ?
