Thanks for the kind comments. I never thought I would get there with the issues I was having with brown algae. I might take a look around for some wood but finding the right peice is going to be the problem

bugger i missed these last replies from you guys where and when could i catch some inanga in wellington ? i assume because they are part of the "whitebait" group that there is only certain times of the year that they can be caught ? anyone in welly go whitebaiting and can point out a good spot ?

thanks spoon for the link - this is the type of pump i ended up with - did the trick quite well but not perfect - just means i need to clean the pond more often to make sure i dont get too much algae build up.

I would have put staffy's in the no go zone with other people's kids around. I've heard too many stories about that kind of dog

Hi TTK - we recently got 2 small dogs, a shih tzu x maltese, and a griffon x maltese - both are good for allergies and don't loose their fur (downside is that they need to be clipped). The griffon is smarter in my opinion and the shih tzu is stubborn - she doesnt listen most of the time but is cute so is forgiven . a couple of reasons we got small dogs was because of the size of our gardon, and because my wife and daughter weren't doggy people so I could never have gotten something that would jump up and nip at them. its all about the training and like many things its the time that you put into them so that you reap the rewards later on.

i think mine will only do solids up to 4mm but i will give it a try if i can get some pipe for it on the weekend. I was looking at that sort of pump today but really i need something with a hose type inlet or someway i can attach a hose like mine so that i can use it as a vacuum to clean the bottom of the pond. Just been out and pulled the casing out from around my pump and it might do the trick so gotta find some hose the right size

hmmm hadn't thought about attaching a pipe to the end of the pump - DUH - this is the pump I currently have - http://www.hozelock.co.nz/aquatics/pumps/filter-pumps/titan/titan-3000.html i will take a look at it and see if i can just attach something to the inlet - looking at the spares diagram http://spares.hozelock.com/product/titan-3000/ there isnt much room to put anything on the end of the pump - i have had to pull grass etc out of the impellor housing so i know that it wont handle that sort of solid material - maybe it will handle that algae. you have those hozelock titan pumps in the shop to be able to pull apart ?

i have some of that algae that chris had in one of his cold water tanks - that stuff that just breaks up as you try to remove it - so i might be doing it more then a couple of times a year (bugger it). also that pump thats currently in there doesnt stretch to the other side of the pond (i mistake on my part when setting it all up) my idea for the new pump was to be able to just suck out the stuff from the bottom like a vacuum without having to stir it all up or remove the fish and turtles. that was a mission last time i did that

needs be able to suck up algae and leaves and turtle poop from the bottom - not sure a sump pump would handle it all without clogging up

hi all - are there any electricians that can help me out here - im looking at getting a pump - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=362419346 which is 12v 12a so 144w - and i want to be about to plug this thing into the wall to be able to use it - i dont really want to have it powered by a car battery which i guess is my other option. so are there any step down transformers that go from 240v to 12v and still pass the 12a needed ?
