My tanks have come right. I'm wondering if there was something in the water early Jan around where I live that might have caused it. I have been filtering / aging the water for the latest changes though.

If you are only 300m from the exchange or cabinet, then something is seriously wrong. I'd say you have some dodgy wiring somewhere or a device other than your modem connected directly to the line without a filter. Have you tried unplugging everything (phones, fax machines, 56k modems, sky decoders, alarms, answering machines, caller ID units etc) from the phone line to see if it improves? You should also try connecting your router to different jackpoints around the house to see if it gets better / worse on them. Also, connect your router directly without using a filter when doing these tests. -

Sorry to tell you the bad news, but if those are your current speeds, ADSL2+ won't help -
+1 for Organism. Redwood is also worth a visit but Organism is my #1 choice. I find fish from any other store REQUIRE that you quarantine them etc. I just don't bother with them any more.

What I'd give to have hours like that again Enjoy them while it lasts.

You better be talking about irssi I use HydraIRC though.

I've tested it 4 times since yesterday morning just for my own sanity. Same result every time. The tank isn't over stocked and 350L is a lot of water to swing the pH in. I think tonight I'll just do a large water change but run it all through a filter I have, add some ager / dechlorination product and through a UV filter just to be extra safe.

That message just means that too many people are using mibbit, so they think you're all bots or something attacking their servers.

Orcon, Vodafone and I think Compass all have their own gear in Auckland. Other ISPs piggy back off those too. Auckland has the best selection in New Zealand. -
Both GH and KH were around 1-2 degrees. I've seen reports online saying they like it a bit harder, however, they've been in similar water conditions for well over a year.

Cheers. I'm really just trying to figure out what could be causing it. I don't shock them, when I do water changes, it's only about 10 - 20% and I trickle feed the water in over an hour or so. Nitrates and phosphates tend to stay pretty low due to plant growth. I will try treating the water with dechlorination products on the next change in case they've put more in the water. Can't taste it though.

Hi, I've had a run of deaths in a 350L tank of mine over the past 2 months. I've just tested water hardness and noticed that the tap water is much softer than it used to be. My test kit goes to a result colour on the first drop, so it's very low. My tank is now sitting at 1-2 GH / KH rather than the 3-5 I saw when I last tested it around July. pH seems to be stable though given the volume. It's mostly been guppies and killies. I don't mind the guppies as they'll just breed rapidly but the death of a few killies is tough. I've also lost a few fish in some other tanks, however, they could be from old age. Question is, can soft water cause fish to die? Also, could the council have done something with our Chch water post earthquake to soften it / do I need to treat my water before putting it in the tank? I called the council and they said it's safe for people but wouldn't give me an answer on what was in it or if they've changed anything since the earthquake. Also, if pH is stable given the volume of water etc, do I need to raise the hardness? I'm not really a fan of adding stuff to tanks, I prefer to let them find their own equilibrium etc but help it along with things like driftwood and plants. If I need to raise it, is there a good way to do it naturally? I'm guessing I'd need to add shells etc, but I don't want to raise the pH if I can help it.

VDSL2 is kind of still in a trial and only active in a few areas, even if the equipment is capable. VDSL2 is much much faster. You'll need to go on a VDSL2 plan from your ISP (if they offer one - at the moment it's only WorldNet I believe). It will require a new router and new filters. In your case, whatever was done to the alarm will need to be upgraded for VDSL2. It will be more expensive as well. -

For those getting speeds less than 10Mb/s, you can check the Telecom Wholesale maps to see if you are in an area that should be able to get faster speeds. http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps On that page, put your address in and let it search. There is a + next to 10 Mbps zone which toggles the 10Mb/s colouring. If it goes blue over your address, you should be able to get 10Mb/s or more. With the above toggled back off, if you zoom out you will see the entire area covered by your exchange. The exchange should be somewhere in the middle of the red area. The further away you are, the slower your speeds will get. However, there are also cabinets for some areas. Down the right hand side it will list cabinets and the status of their upgrades. If you are on a cabinet it should be shown in the list and when you hover over its name, it will highlight an area of the map. Generally if you are in a cabinet area, you will get pretty reasonable speeds. The other thing to note is at the top right it will say what services are available at the address. If it doesn't say ADSL2+ then no matter what you do, you won't be able to get any more than 8Mb/s. After all of that, if you think you're not getting the speeds you should be, post the information from your router as per some previous posts along with the rough distance you are from your exchange or cabinet. -

Your speedtest result is much lower than your sync speed. You should be seeing 15Mb/s or so. Are you using wireless? If so, have you tried plugging in instead and testing? -

You could try going to one of these pages and see if it prompts you for a username and password. http://192.168.1.1/ http://192.168.0.1/ http://10.0.0.1/ If none of those work, assuming you're using windows, hold the windows key on your keyboard then press R. In the box that comes up, type cmd then press enter. In the window that comes up, type ipconfig then press enter. It will tell you a default gateway. In your web browser, go to http://default gateway number The default username and password is admin / admin Once logged in, go to Status up the top then DSL line down the left. That is the page of information. -

Oh I know exactly what it is. Telecom Wholesale dimension their BUBA backhaul links at 45kbit/s so if demand exceeds this average, we suffer I haven't really had my full 24mbit ish since Slingshot introduced the All You Can Eat plan. The reason the ping is stable is because slingshot have put limits in place to stop the link from becoming completely saturated. Ping and jitter are fine now. Back in October they were through the roof though. -

Due to backhaul (connection from Telecom Wholesale into your ISP), I only get this but my line is capable of a lot more -
I too have had deaths recently and I can't explain why as all the tests I do on my water come out with good results. I'm in Cashmere.
-
Yeah, who needs an alarm clock
-
If you do choose slingshot and want more data, you can buy data blocks which are valid for 12 months. So you can purchase a 50GB block for $50 and you won't lose it the next month etc.
-
Depends what common sites you're talking about, but if you're talking about bittorrent etc from the big public sites, speeds should be reasonable as slingshot have p2p caching that assist with those. Given you said you only want about 40GB of usage, I think you should be fine on slingshot.
-
HAHA No data blocks any more .. I got them all P.S. Slingshot is still pretty good. I use them myself. However, the experience you get depends on the type of traffic you use. They are a low cost / high data ISP, meaning something has to give. Money doesn't grow on trees. But for the money you spend, you can get a decent amount of data. With those 40GB pro plans, you also have 6 hours between 2AM - 8AM where your usage is free every night. People do report up to 15GB / night on that giving you up to 450GB (free off peak) + 40GB (plan data) in a month for $55.
