Has anybody taken fish on a Jetstar flight?
Phantom replied to cichlid7's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
I've taken them on both JetStar and Air NZ. Security has never been an issue, but if you get to the boarding area and the airline staff find out what you have, they'll probably say you can't board. As others have said, just hide them in carry on so they don't know. -
P.S. not mine, just random picture off the internet.

I've always gone with DD-WRT capable routers for wireless bridges. Currently my flavour of the month is the D-Link DIR-615.

I had a 22L nano marine as well. Had no problems with it. Didn't use RO water either. No skimmer, used purigen and carbon in the filter. Had 3 coral frags, fire shrimp and a small damsal in it. That was until I got my 450L tank, everything went in there. My build: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=53458

Nvidia cards (9xxx and below) kinda series are the ones that are likely to have issues with audio over HDMI. ATI's and intel integrated solutions should work fine, as should any newer nvidia card.

So you want to run it like this picture from that auction? (Except the modem for internet and wireless router at the top is 1 device not 2?) On that device, you won't be able to have it repeat the wireless signal and also act as a bridge (a bridge is what the picture shows). You need to look in the manual and follow the instructions for setting it up as a bridge, not an AP client.

That tank is one of the ones they did on the TV show - Tanked. It was for a furniture store. Video: http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/tanked/videos/reveal-overhead-bed-frame-tank.htm Edit: Actually, maybe it's not the same one. If it's not, it's very similar.

I've got a 22L nano marine, or at least I did until I got a 400L tank and stopped caring about the nano. Anyway, I don't have a skimmer, used purigen and some carbon. Weekly 4L water changes and it never had a problem. Had 3 coral frags, a fire shrimp and a yellow tail damsel in it. I wanted to do it after the quakes and seeing a nano at Organism. John told me what he runs in his and I replicated the same at home, but put in additional LED lighting that I custom fitted to it.

This topic got me re-testing one of my tanks as I've taken many steps to reduce power bills on other things. I've got a decent inline power meter that lets you program in the unit cost of power and it shows you how much it has cost you over time. I'm with Powershop (who are more expensive than others in winter and also include your daily charge, but cheaper in summer, plus you can get your power cheaper if you buy in advance etc). Anyway, at the time I plugged it in, my rate was 25.26c per kWh. The tank in question is a 400ish litre salt water tropical tank at 26 degrees with 2 x 300W heaters, 4 x 54W T5 HO's, 2 powerheads and a skimmer. 4 tubes are on from 7AM -> 7PM, 2 tubes until 10PM. It's quite a lot of light, but I like seeing my fish and corals. It has a lid but no insulation around it. It's a Juwel Rio 400 tank if anyone wants to look at it. I live in Christchurch and my home isn't very well insulated. We're spending a fortune keeping it heated as our internal doors don't shut etc and we only have a heatpump. Have to make do though and just wear the extra cost (would cost us more to find a different rental rather than pour money into heating). Anyway, we're home evenings and weekends, heat the house during those times to 26 on the heat pump. Tank I've measured is in the same room as the heat pump, but about 6m away on a diagonal. Overnight, the temp in the house drops to about 5 degrees on average and might climb to 10 or so during the day until we get home depending on the weather. I think all of those details are important, as the temps the tank is exposed to makes a huge difference on your water heating costs. Anyway, I've had the meter on for 171 hours and it says it has cost me $11.29. That's 6.6c / hour or $47.53 / 30 day month. Hope that helps.

I looked at doing this on a 450 (ended up buying a 400 instead), but you don't have much room to work with. From what I found on the net, the best idea is to create 2 sumps and put them on both side bits. One will have the skimmer and the other can have everything else. Run a pipe through the middle section to connect them. I'm using a Deltec MCE600 hang on back skimmer instead.

Does this stand look safe enough for my tank???
Phantom replied to aaron11's topic in Beginners Corner
Would be useless in an earthquake if you ever got one up there. (I look at everything with earthquake goggles now) -
I'm an IT Manager .. love fishkeeping. I want to set up a tank at work even. I know another IT Manager who already has lots of tanks at work.

They're actually pretty easy to do. I don't know the speed moves but I simplified the algorithms to suit me and can do them in about 3 minutes using those methods. Not too many rules to learn. I've also taught < 10 year olds to do it using my methods. I've got a 5x5x5 cube too and they're solved the same way as a 3x3x3 .. you just have to do a fair bit of prep work before you apply the 3x3x3 methods.

I was going to get one of those. I do have a Rio 400 which has the same lighting. I'm using it as a marine tank and I have good coral growth with 4 x T5's. I also have a planted freshwater Trigon 350 which has the same filtration as the Vision 450. The plants grow well in it, provided they don't mind the extra depth you get in it (Trigon's are deeper). I don't use the Juwel sponges though, apart from the first stage coarse sponges. I run bio media and purigen in it.

If you do end up breeding them and look to sell some, I'd be very keen. I had killie breeding tanks pre feb quake and was just starting to get results. Lost virtually all my females in the quake. I have a display tank with a bunch of old males in it. Really would like to get back to having killie breeding tanks going again. After the quake I only had 1 usable tank left so I put all my fish in it. I managed to get some offspring but I now have no idea if they're cross bred or not. I really need to start fresh.

I like that, might even be able to add functionality to add information back if it doesn't have it .. since it's a wiki and all.

Yeah I too have books, never really spent much time on websites. Was hoping someone here might be able to recommend a few good ones that have most fish etc.

Best one I've seen yet!

What platform are you interested in? I'm developing for Windows Phone. Was thinking of just searching decent sites and parsing the info to extract the relevant information. E.g. Photo, common name, scientific name, water parameters, size, temperment, diet, breeding notes. Then have the ability to set up tanks, each tank has a selection of fish, plants etc, lets you record water parameters and note when you've done changes etc. Maybe even graph the parameters over time (but that's not really of interest to me - I rarely check mine these days). Since it is on Windows Phone, I'd also give you the option to have a live tile that shows how long ago you changed water etc and changes colour as time goes on.

I'm thinking about writing an app for my phone to keep information about my fish, plants, corals, invertebrates etc that I have, and also have the ability to quickly look up some information about others if I see something in a LFS etc. Are there any one-stop-shop websites out there that you can find information for each of those 4 types of things? (different websites for each kind are fine) What do people use to find out information like this?

How to tell when the NZD will become stronger?
Phantom replied to Squirt's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
If we could know the answer to this then we'd all be making money trading in FX, who needs a job! The NZD will eventually get weaker, but you might be waiting a few years. You'd want to be listening out for good news out of SE Asian markets and companies that operate in that region. When they do well, the NZD will weaken against them (they become stronger) and then you'll get more money back. I don't know of anything coming up that will weaken our dollar any time soon. -
I'd also recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you're after something free. Personally I run NOD32 and I also run it on all our machines at work. But it's not free. AVG should be avoided, it was alright about 4 years ago, but nowadays it misses so much without you even realising. I have tested MSE on many computers I've fixed up for friends etc over the past year (many used AVG thinking they were OK), and it picked up everything that NOD32 did. Edit: Probably worth noting that everyone will have their own opinions of what is good / bad. People don't tend to try many AV products and don't know how well they work until they have problems. I could also state about my experience in IT and how many computers I look after daily, but really I'm in the same boat. If you want a comparison, go to someone independant that really put the products through their paces and see what they say. These guys are good http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/summary/summary2011.pdf

This is the HOB model http://deepblueaquarium.co.nz//product_info.php?cPath=42_43&products_id=69 Personally I have a Deltec MCE600 as a HOB skimmer on a 450L tank. It's great, but quite a bit more expensive than the BM.

I use prime when regenerating my purigen to get rid of the chlorine. Also used it post quake when our water here had lots of chlorine in it. I've used flourish excel many years ago to kill BBA, but have resorted to using fish to control that kind of thing now. I still do use it whenever I trim back my plants as it does seem to make quite a difference to their growth and colour.

That is true, but for this hobby specifically, if we don't buy some things from LFS's then soon they'll go out of business and we'll lose the ability to go in and view / pick livestock. I've got a favourite LFS here in Christchurch and I'll support him even if he doesn't have the lowest price as he's doing a great thing for the hobby.
