I too liked the look of the one in Organism. I ended up doing it myself using a fluval edge tank and following advice from John at Organism and others online. My tank has been going for 4 months or so now and still going strong.

Nic from livingreef is building his own tanks for his new shop I believe. I asked him about getting a sump built for a marine setup and he said he's got someone that can do them who has been teaching him. Not sure if that's an open offer, but you could always ask.

It gets plenty of airation etc in the filter unit on the back, this just protects the lights and stops the heat from the lights from evapourating the water quickly. It's been running for months now and I've had no issues at all. No salt build up.

Sorry, have been real busy lately, also got sidetracked because I now have a 450L marine tank. I got this one going. Have a small blue damsal and a fire shrimp in there, as well as a few soft corals. Due to the size of it and how quickly water would evapourate, I made a seal from polycarb that sits inside the top of the edge tank and also over top of the in built filter. Since doing that, I've lost pretty much 0 water. I'll take a photo of that tomorrow. Next step, I'll probably take it apart again and look to replace the filter with some kind of pump that cycles water from my 450L tank into this one.

Looks good, that plumbing worked out well

I've just purchased the contents of lambo's marine tank and am running it in a Juwel Rio 400. This is my first real venture into reefkeeping. Before I confirm the positions of corals, I wanted to make sure I learnt about them all and found out the right conditions and if there are any conflicts with other corals. Can you please help me ensure I have the correct names and help identify the few I don't know. If you need higher res shots of anything, please ask. Thanks First, 2 FTS's how the tank looks at the moment. I plan to keep this layout, but change the positions of corals once I know what can go where. These ones I'm not sure on the names: Blue Neon Polyps? Gorgonia? Green Zoanthid? Green Zoanthid? Don't know what this is Don't know what this is Don't know what this is Pink Finger Leather? Pulsing Xenia? Toadstool Leather ( .. scientific name? ) Yellow Trumpet? These ones I think I have right: Devil's Hand Leather (Lobophytum sp.) Doughnut (Cynarina lacrymalis) Dragon Eye (Zoanthus sp.) Flower Mushroom (Ricordea Yuma) Green Frogspawn (Euphyllia paradivisa) Green Spotted Mushroom (Actinodiscus sp.) Green Striped Mushroom (Actinodiscus sp.) Kenya Tree (Capnella sp.) Octopus Frogspawn (Euphyllia paradivisa) Purple Mushroom (Actinodiscus sp.) Red Mushroom (Actinodiscus sp.) Sarcophyton Toadstool Leather (Sarcophyton sp.) Torch (Euphyllia glabrescens) Turquoise Starburst Polyp (Briareum sp.)

Hehe you don't know much about marine then It doesn't have any media at all .. but sure, I absolutely agree with you from a freshwater point of view. I run excessive filtration on all my freshwater tanks I've heard you can overdo skimming though, if there isn't enough to skim out. Any truth to that?

OK, I'll go for a BM I was only asking about some of these others based on information given to me by LFS's and things I'd seen available locally. I'm now looking at avoiding the sump idea if I can (due to the lack of space for one) and going with a HOB Bubble Magus NAC5e. Any pro's / con's of that one? I see it's rated for 300 - 500L. Is there any benefit in running 2 of them? You're also right, the price of BM's is rather competitive.

Reason I asked about that a store is selling the Berlin for $295, RRP seems to be $700+. Redwood recommended one, said they were running one on one of their display tanks.
-
Ahh OK. Yeah I was kind of comparing it that way. I was in at redwood aq here in chch and the guy was recommending the Berlin stuff or Dymax, but also said the Aqua Ones were probably OK too.
-
What about a Berlin Turbo Skimmer Classic? Any good?
-
I agree, I wouldn't normally consider them. However, I was told HFF run them on their marine setups. HFF have also advertised them here yesterday and had a reply from someone saying they were good. Talking around $300 mark for on Aqua One G224 which is 1850L/hr.
-
Thanks. Yesterday I got my notification that the EQC cheque is in the mail. If I really really had to, I can spend up to $10k on this. I'd prefer to keep it around the $6k region though. I've been speaking with some people about the Aqua One skimmers. I know Aqua One is normally considered to be a cheap option, but the 5 people I've talked to say they have no problems with them and they do a great job, they wouldn't consider a more expensive one now.
-
I can afford $15 / L. I lost a lot of tanks, my EQC cheque is pretty decent. Replacing them all with just 1 tank.
-
I've considered the other tanks, but I already have Juwel tanks and I love them. I've never really been that impressed with the look of the red sea max tanks. I've asked for prices on the 500L and so far people think it will be around the $7000 - $8000 mark. OK so assuming I will have the Juwel .. and I might drill it, what gear would people recommend using? Skimmers, sump design, pumps, wave makers etc.
-
I don't own my own house, so can't build one to suit. Already have asked Bob, he's about $600 more than other places for the tank alone without any modifications. Maybe he'd do a deal on the works, I'll ask.
-
I've had regular glass tanks before, I just don't like them as much. The Juwel's look awesome and I already have 2. I just don't think I'd like it as much if it was a plain glass tank. Then there is the stand etc too. Maybe I could get it drilled, Bob's pricing on the tanks is a bit expensive though compared to others.

So I got a call from EQC saying they're processing my claim (yay). I have about $5000 worth of tanks they're paying out on and I've decided I want to switch from freshwater to marine. I've got a Juwel trigon 350 and a Juwel trigon 180 already, both are freshwater killie tanks. I'll keep them. To keep the look going, I'd like to get a Juwel vision 450 tank with my EQC money and set that up marine. So since this will be my first real venture into marine and I've got a bit of money to splash on it, what would people recommend purchasing to do so. I could spend more than $5k, I am getting more than that from EQC, so money isn't so much of an object in this case. Ideally I'd like to keep the elegant design of the Juwel tanks and I'd rather not drill the glass if I can help it. Thinking I'll have to go with a HOB skimmer of some sort that doesn't look too bad. Trigon 350 (350L) looks like this: Vision 450 (450L) looks like this:

I'm just starting out with marine but was approached by a member of another forum who said they're working on opening a specialist marine store in Christchurch. I don't have any further details though. There is also the new online shop (coralreef) that just started recently, but that is all shipped.
-
If you want more options, http://www.dealextreme.com has a lot of LEDs and most of it has free shipping. If you wanted the same thing but without the casing, they have them for US$14.10. But you'd need the US$11.30 driver to run it from 230V and a heatsink as well.

It did go on for a while. Didn't really get back to sleep after that. Was quite rolling at our place in Cashmere. No damage where I am though.
-
Ahh OK. Yes they do eventually drain into a creek on one of his boundaries. The ponds are surrounded by rushes, grasses and some native bush. Plenty of insects, few ducks and the swans I mentioned. Cattle are running on the property. Not sure what other wildlife is there.
-
My dad has a lot of land up in Northland. On his property he has 3 ponds, each about 500 m^2 and about 1m deep. They're constantly being fed by springs and water is flowing out of them into swamp like areas. He'd like to put some fish in them to help keep them clean etc. He has ducks on them all and 2 of the ponds have a pair of swans living on them. Lots of insects around and in the water. What kinds of fish could he consider?
-
I'm looking to get a Juwel Vision 450 and use it for marine once I get a cheque from EQC. If you don't want to drill it, Juwel are about to release a skimmer that will sit inside their tanks. Apparantly it will be here in about a month.

A quick search revealed this http://www.bareefers.org/home/node/13177 Pity you don't have a Windows Phone device. I'm a registered developer for those. I might try making an app for this anyway. If you wanted a PC app, I can do those as well.
