  1. I saw a thread on a reptile forum last night, with graphic pictures of a post mortem where the stomach held about 30 undigested mealworms which had caused impaction. It wasnt necessarily the mealworms themselves, but the quantity of them fed at a time and frequency.
  2. Dont you mean aftershock? I cant figure out why christchurch is still calling them aftershocks. aftershocks go on for a few days afterward at most, and gradually get smaller. Its either ignorance that its a one off and wont happen again, or that its something to do with their insurance claims. :dunno:
  3. Well he eats healthier than I do... Id love to feed locusts as a staple, but considering they work out to be like $1 each its a bit expensive... and Its too much trouble for me to breed them. Ill get him a pack of 25 occaisionally and let him demolish the whole lot in one sitting.
  4. thats what happens when you let em get fussy
  5. I feed mine on mealies regularly - about 15 of them twice a week. Occaisionally ill let him attack a lid full of the flukers freeze dried ones too. I only feed my beardie on mealworms and the bags of mesculin salad from the supermarket - dusted with calcium and vitamins. He appears to be in good shape, active and not fat (he gets a good runaround). Although not a perfect diet, he seems pretty happy, but ill start enriching his diet once i have a bit more time on my hands. Mealworms are an ok staple IMO so long as they get enough exercise so they dont go obese...
  6. I have about 15kg of driftwood in my reptile enclosure, and all of it is off the ground so to speak - and none of it is secured in any way - but its safe and wont budge. youve just got to find ways of locking it together naturally, combining that with the the edges of the glass etc and it can be stable.
  7. Yep, the figures I believe are something like this from memory: Dog - 40% Cat - 30% Fish - 15% Small animals -10% Birds - 5%
  8. Fish deaths are common. Its just how vigilant the particular store is at getting them out before anyone sees them. If you think about it logically as to what happens: Most fish are bred overseas. They are shipped to the importer - a load will die due to the stress of shipping - or make them weaker. Then they are shipped to stores, further stress, and the weaker ones die. Hopefully by the time it comes for you to purchase fish, only the stronger and healthier fish remain. But then take into account the potential for nets being thrashed around to catch them, further stress, which can be the answer to the mysterious of fish dying when you get them home - plus the further stress of more transportation.
  9. Whoa how did i not notice that. but anyways point is you can get some decent cams with good lenses quite cheap if you shop around...
  10. within ya budget luke this is one of the best deals around. http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/canon/10mp-10x-optical-zoom-digital-camera-sku-28005/
  11. My Fuji DSLR uses an SD... and i bought that last year.
  12. I use it, though never in the room that i keep mine, or adjoining rooms. i have lids with only ventiliation at the back next to the walls, so i deem it to be ok.
  13. depends what you want. Keeping monsters generally means not having a visually appealing aquascape, and not much colour. But they are cool.
  14. hard to tell from those pics. didnt think we got them in NZ? i used to catch heaps of them in the uk
  15. Now you know what you should do with your 6ft
  16. and some random pics i took his weekend too. one thing i love about this beardy is his beard is a nice orange - pics dont show it up well though.
  17. Ive been a busy bunny last few days, working on renovating Yodas enclosure. I removed the silica sand and replaced with lino tiles - although the lino doesnt do squat for keeping claws trim, its tidy, and a doddle to clean. he skates around on it too... Also upgraded the lighting - was using a exo terra large clamp lamp with a 5.0 26w compact, due to it being a long enclosure, the clamp lamp pretty much supplied light to the basking area at the warm end only. so today went to HFF and got a 3ft aquaone light hood, and now running a 30w exo terra 10.0 tube - most notably the light is a different colour, a cool blue almost like an actinic, rather than the warm yellow of the previous light. distance from the light to the floor is 50cm - the max rated distance for the UV, and created him a longer raised area to bask. mounted the light hood with some hooks screwed into the lid and some thick auto cable, seems sturdy, and the wire doesnt slip - will have to monitor it though to ensure it doesnt detiorate from the heat - id hate the whole unit to drop on the fella. The light hood enabled me to shield my moonlight bulb - its a 25w P10 exo terra night glo that i have on all night, and its quite bright when you wake up at night and its in your face! Also got new thermometers and a hygrometer on order (the exo terra dial ones) as i dont like the messy wires of a probe thermometer. and ive got a zoomed hammock and ladder coming too, cant wait Thinking about going to stone and water world to see if i can build a nice rockwork raised area right across the back, but thatll have to wait.
  18. flowerhorn = made me have to rehome everything else so it could have the 500L to itself. otherwise, great fish... with the larger cichlids (25cm+ adult size) i would prefer to keep them solo as a wet pet, or just a breeding pair (which depending on species can be rather difficult to obtain) they are all pretty similar really, some more agro than others. communities of big boisterious cichlids even in large large tanks are hit and miss also. just my 0.02c.
  19. If I had a $ for every time someone started a thread moaning about small tanks for goldfish i would be quite wealthy. Its a fact of life. It aint gonna change. Huge manufactures like Aquaone and Hagen make them and sell them, stores will stock them as people will buy them. Its business. In the grand scheme of things Its hardly nice keeping any fish in captivity, and could be seen as cruel, just the smaller tanks are more cruel. I dont condone it, but jees, just get over it.
  20. I turned down a good ticket and went for a ride on my bike instead. lol. we had 4 of the $240 tickets and couldnt give them away.
