  1. Congrats At least you're actually doing something about it! Filling gaps in research is extremely important when it comes to risk assessments made by the decision makers.
  2. I might also be upgrading my tank and when I was thinking of the logistics of getting it to and into my house plus if I wanted to re-adjust the position it just made my head hurt Dear lord. Can you hold them up vertically at all when bringing down stairs or is that a no-no. I also have to consider floor strength.... It would be on the bottom level of the house, which i'm pretty sure is a solid concrete foundation. Can the weight of a full tank of that size crack a concrete floor? (sorry Amy for hijacking your thread)
  3. so how many people will you need to get to carry that thing in?!
  4. I have the exact same problem. I inherited a clownloach with a tank purchase off TradeMe which I intended to sell but I haven't been able to catch the bugger. So now he is stuck in a 200L community tank...alone....for the rest of his life.
  5. If you wanna talk to the kiwi lady here at DoC in Welly, then PM with a number she can call you on and I'll forward it to her
  6. From my experience with angel eggs, popping the white ones causes the fungus to spread easier to surrounding eggs. Best to try and remove the whole egg. Let me know how you get on!
  7. I like Amateur Surgeon and Zoo Lasso. Not free, but cheap enough. I think they may have a free trial version too.
  8. So exciting! The eggs look so healthy and bright! Awesome One of my royal whiptails is quite fat... I'm hoping its a female with eggs...also hoping the other one is a male M
  9. I may need your services with my angelfish pair depending on who buys them on TradeMe! Will keep you posted
  10. Bilbo in bulls has some nice blue turqs. I got 2, they have a lot of blue on them.
  11. Sorry to hear about your babies Were these the ones from that one seller (one came with deformed fin)? I don't know what to suggest other then maybe some fungalcide treatment or furan 2
  12. I have heard you can get them literally a few houses down from where you live... *hint hint*. Do you know the stream I am talking about? I haven't tried there myself but know of someone else who has caught some of those shrimp there at night but scooping at the sides of the stream with a net. Surely you must have tried this stream before, being that you are so close to it, but maybe its not a good time of the year or they have all been fished out... hence why I don't want to give the stream name on here.
  13. *pulls hair out and runs away*
  14. This should definitely be mentioned in the "You know you're addicted to fish when..." thread I think I have seen something like it before...and also those burning fireplace vids.
  15. Hey, quit getting me on technicalities! Hehe, if you can't turn it off, just remove the bulb!
  16. Sorry, didn't have time to read the whole thread. Stink! Maybe put the filter over the bottom of the lights? Or just turn 1 of them off? Isn't it a bit of a waste to be burning those bulbs without getting full use of the bright light? Otherwise, I like the idea the others had of putting in floating plants (ricca or duckweed) or tiger lotuses or just adding tannins to the water.
  17. You can try neutral density filter. Complicated name for what is essentially tinted film. You can easily find it in a photographic supply store (I know Wellington Photographics has it here - http://www.wps.net.nz/). Put it on the top over the glass and voila! I used heaps of this stuff over the lids of my containers when I was doing my grad work and needed to precisely control light intensity. Its about $30/m (and its 1m wide) and comes in at least 3 grades. I forget the exact labels for the grades but its something like .3, .6, and .8. .3 is '1 stop' and thus blocks out half of the light, and I suggest this one (or something lower if its available) because you can always layer them. You can also cut little bits out of it to create that nice light beam look in your tank. It will withstand the heat of the lamps and does not block out UV which is a bonus.
  18. I tend to agree with this. People are finicky and get bored of things quickly once the novelty wears off. In Canada I had the pleasure of keeping a bearded dragon, green iguana, crested gecko, house geckos, skinks, red-eyed tree frogs, and aquatic african dwarf frogs. I also had access to and took care of chamelions, tokay geckos, boa constrictors, box turtles, leopard geckos, poison dart frogs, different tree frogs, other snakes, etc. But now I live in NZ and am limited in my selection. But I've also realized that out of all herps and fish i've kept before, I still felt equally about them all. Meaning that it didn't really matter if i was keeping something really cool and rare or something common because in the end, caring for each animal was equally rewarding and fun. Maybe I got it out of my system while growing up that makes me feel this way. But I think that people here in NZ sometimes put too much value on something just because they can't have it. Like jc and insect direct mention, NZ natives are priceless and it is important to protect them as a primary focus. If you wanna feel like you've got something exciting and rare, why not apply to keep NZ natives. Then you can go on all the overseas reptile forums and make them drool over the animals they can't have.
  19. So cool! I love shots of little things like this
  20. Being that those tubes are made from glass, I don't think that guppy knew it was swimming into anything. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time...and went with the current of water
  21. Aww Amy, sorry to hear about the little fatty Was thinking about burying him under something... would it work in a pot given his size?
  22. Thanks guys. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the body. He is in my freezer But at least all the other fish are doing well! His girlfriend has settled in and acts as if she hasn't even switched tanks. And I got 2 royal whiptails to cheers me up
  23. People living in the Waikato should dust off their old kayaks, as they may need them to get to work on Monday
  24. My friend is doing her pHd on Kereru and is involved with this project: http://www.kererudiscovery.org.nz/ I'm sure she would greatly appreciate if you can record your sighting on their database
