  1. Giving my professional opinion (LOL), I think that one on the right is a humpback whale
  2. I'm gonna have to get a new boy. Because mine is pretty useless...lol. The female is ready to go and he doesn't know what he's doing!
  3. I found my rams are settling in but taking longer to get in the mood. The female now appears to have an ovipositor and seems to have been fairly plump from the beginning. She has now become more aggressive with the couple of female guppies in the tank and also chases the 'malee' around. The 'male' chases her sometimes but isn't really interested in the other fish. I've kept the guppies in there on purpose to see if the rams get more aggressive towards them...i plan to move them out soon. Since I am new to trying to breed rams I am not sure if they are 'pairing' yet but i'll be sure to keep a close eye on them. I'm gonna try to post a few pics soon because i would like someone to confirm whether i indeed have a male and female. What are the most noticeable difference between your pair? My male seems to have much longer pelvic fins, more pointed dorsal/anal tips and body shape is a bit slimmer...but his colours are not as bright as the female's and his 2nd dorsal ray isn't really that long (but maybe because he's still young) so i'm not sure. Thanks for the info Goodluck with the bubs!
  4. I still have to convince mine to lay eggs! I think I have a male and female but I'm starting to doubt it. I've been trying to add rainwater with the water changes but so far nothing. They are happy though and eating quite a bit. Did you do anything to get yours to breed? How do you find your pair act around each other? I find that after you hatch a batch of bbs, you can actually put in in the fridge at the end of the day. The bbs die but stay fresh for several days and i've had success with fry eating it. Helps make it easier than constantly trying to hatch them everyday. Don't know if the e.b ram fry will go for it though.
  5. I just got a 'pair' today. Aimed for a male and female but not sure if that is what I ended up with The differences seem to be really subtle with these guys...anyone got any tips for what they looked for when they got a male and female? I looked at the first rays of the dorsal fin, the rounded-ness of the anal/dorsal fin, the robustness/streamliness of the body, etc. But right now my 'female' is colouring up more then my 'male'....so not sure. Will post pics shortly. Mine look very happy and healthy at the moment, and most of the ones at Animates Kaiwharawhara looked healthy, but a few had some torn fins, and 2 looked like they may have a bit of finrot! I decided to take the risk with mine though *fingers crossed*
  6. Hi guys, one of my friends is giving a talk about exotic reptiles in NZ and I thought some of you may be interested so Ive included the email below. Cheers! ---- Dear Colleagues, MAF Biosecurity New Zealand is pleased to invite you to Octobers' seminar, part of our 2009 Science Seminar Series. Heidy Kikillus, PhD student at Victoria University of Wellington, will give a seminar entitled: Great pets or potential pests? Exotic reptiles in New Zealand Exotic reptiles are popular pets in New Zealand and several species are legally kept in captivity, however the establishment potential and associated impacts for these animals are unknown. Worldwide, reptiles are successful invaders, often implicated in serious ecological and economic disruption. One exotic species has already established in New Zealand (the Australian rainbow skink, Lampropholis delicata). The potential for further establishments is ever present as several species of exotic reptile are legally traded in New Zealand and escapes and intentional releases are commonly reported. This research aims to identify species of exotic reptile that may have the ability to establish in New Zealand, areas of New Zealand that may be susceptible to invasion, and potential impacts associated with their establishment. Methods include bioclimatic and physiological models, as well as disease screening of captive pets and specimens intercepted at the borders. Heidy Kikillus is a PhD student at Victoria University of Wellington researching exotic reptiles in New Zealand. A trip to the Galapagos Islands in 2001 sparked an interest in invasive species, which led Heidy to New Zealand to complete a Master of Conservation Biology. She is currently in her final year of her PhD. Date: Tuesday 27th October, 10 am - 11.30 am Venue: Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry, Pastoral House, 25 The Terrace, Level 3, Room 3 Note that the venue is limited to approximately 100 seats, which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you are interested in attending please reserve a seat by replying to this email. We look forward to seeing you there. 7. What bugs me with FishWorld and HappyAquarium is how quickly the tanks get dirty! I mean come on! You can't even go 1 day without them becoming completely filthy and the fish gasping at the bottom
  8. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink...
  9. Is it possible to exchange the camera you bought for a slightly different model which does fit the casing they have available?
  10. You definetly NEED Hep A injection if you travel to tropical places. You get the one shot now, and get a booster within a year then you'll be set for 10 years. You can get Hep A from eating food raw, drinking water or even icecubes so its a must. I got my vaccine, it doesn't hurt...but your arm will be bit tender for a couple days after.

    Beware of the kakapo...

Hehe yeah I saw this a couple days ago. Almost peed my pants Great stuff!
  12. Hi guys, I've had this guppy since he was a fry. I separated him out early on because he had quite interesting colouration. Yesterday he started swimming near the top but showing not other signs of illness. This evening he was still at the top and now I noticed he has a strange red bubble coming out of his vent. He's always been fairly skinny. Are these some sort of intestinal parasites or worms causing this problem? I've heard livebearers are prone to Camallanus and am worried about the other fish in my community tank. He is now quarantined but I heard its contagious. What would be the best/most readily available meds to treat him? He is still quite lively and isn't breathing heavily but isn't eating as readily. Cheers.
  13. Hi, I also have a few plants (borneo sword, and one i don't know the name of) that started doing this. I don't know for sure why it was happening but i bumped one of my light tubes up to a 10000K and it looks like its stopped...i was dosing liquid co2 and fert before as well as currently so that variable hasn't changed. I have a peace lily in my tank. Its growing new leaves regularly, and it flowered (but the flower disintegrated pretty quickly). I was told that it would survive underwater for about 2 years and then it'll start dying...so you'll have to take it out.
  14. I would take the old stuff out and just use the new stuff because over time they will mix together...unless you are after that look.

    Drift Wood

I'm still waiting for the driftwood I found on the beach to sink.... Its been in the laundry sink covered with water and weighted down with water-filled buckets and still pops up to the surface when I move the buckets. I have 2 different types and neither will sink Its been like that for weeks...how long does it normally take? How do you know if u have collected unsinklable wood?
  18. My favourite is the pectoral fin God I love macro lenses! My friends always tease me for running around with my camera right up against things What kinds of shutter speed and flash/lighting are u using? I'm still having trouble getting crisp shots from my aquarium. That might change after i replace a fluoro tube...
  19. LOL I had to write a review about Facebook games for NZGamer.com, because my boyfriend is the creator of the site. Here is the article of the top 5 if u wanna check it out. I specifically left out Mafia Wars because I hate the viral approach and this was before Farmville had come out as well. http://nzgamer.com/pc/features/771/top- ... games.html I still play some of the games passively as well. Pet Society, Mousehunt, Restaurant City....but I've pretty much had to try them all to write the article. Haven't heard of Happy Aquarium yet so I'll try that one!!! Feel free to add me as a friend if you want another 'neighbour', etc...
  20. I play 'Fish Wrangler' - its a passive game so its low maintenance and I've played 'Fish a Fish' a few times I joined the FNZAS group on facebook a while ago (I was the 18th member)...but there was no activity on it so i forgot about it....
  21. This is a a species of Drum And this one is not a Chameleon, but a Banded Iguana (I think). Awesome shots!
