  1. what size are the tanks? at least it's summer. My 21 L tank was without power for a full working day , temp did drop but inhabitants coped.
  2. hi and welcome dlmckay - glad you found your way to the forums , I think you know who I am from the ol EZYchat days. Sorry to hear about your tank troubles - everyone here is really helpful and friendly and will do their best to help sort things out for you.
  3. what will you do? catch them and bring them inside?
  4. yeah I think if you stir up the gravel too much in an aquarium , especially from underneath ornaments that aren't moved much ,anaerobic toxins and stuff gets released. So I wonder if the pond got stirred up too much with the rain and turbulence.
  5. one has started to eat, the other one still hides.
  6. usually means killing selectively .. but you can cull by just giving away the rejects if you don't actually want to kill them.
  7. so 2 years is when they are fully grown?
  8. can't believe how much he has grown in 8 months.. still got more to go i think. Wish my camera took better photos without the flash as the flash ruins his true colours but the first pic looks so dark. At what age can you sex these guys? Can you tell by the body shape? just curious. I'm not planning on breeding but it would be nice to know. in real life he is a dark brown and the stripes are whitish gold. with flash
  9. all my fish love the hikari algae wafers.. but especially my hypan! Phoenix.. which ones do you use for yours? i was at HFF yesterday trying to decide between the algae wafers and the sinking wafers . Ended up sticking with what I know and got the mini algae wafers as my fish are smaller species.
  10. thanks ryanjury I was just at HFF in the weekend too! It's not on their website but I'll email them.
  11. I know adtape is one of them .. are there any others? I emailed MYVET to ask if he was able to source any liquid prazi but all he knows of is adtape drench which is $400 for 5L . He said if I knew of any other trade names he could look into getting smaller quantities. I've had some guppies die off with no obvious signs except one was really skinny and seemed to have open gills.. the others had no visible signs of distress. I've looked really hard for worms hanging out their butt but didn't see any calamanus. I had a little prazi a while ago that was given to me and I used to treat all my new livebearers with it while they were in quarantine. But I've since ran out and now my guppys seem ailed. All the other fish seem ok however. So I want to get a hold of some prazi to 1. treat the tank (unless you can offer me a better solution to my guppy problem) and 2. to treat new fish before I add them to community.

I have this tank. what are you asking about? when /how many lights ? .. plants?
  13. I knew they were a quiet fish but didn't realise just how shy they were! We bought two pearl gourami yesterday to go in daughetrs tank - sharing with a juvenile peacock and a guppy trio. (fry food for eel) There's plants and tunnels and driftwood and urn. The two gourami just hide out at the back corner as soon as we go near the tank and have not eaten anything in the 24hrs we've had them. Food goes in, guppies gobble it all up while the gouramis hide out. Fed the eel bloodworms this morning and one gouruami darts down to the tunnel and hasn't come out yet. I do hope they will become less scared of us and start to eat soon or are they always going to let the guppy eat first (eat everything!) We were going to do the scheduled water change today but maybe this might be too much upset for the fish so soon. Any hints on getting them to feed?
  14. including water conditioners? This is something my daughter is going to look into soon.
  15. I'm not an expert on healing measures on fish but salt and water changes is usually my first step for any fin damage. Guppys respond well to that and my dwarf gouramis did also.. but the dwarfs also got daily acriflavine baths for a week - they were quite damaged though after getting stuck in a driftwood tunnel and I had to push them out physically. They had dorsal and anal fin damage plus head wounds. They are fine now and as strong as ever.
  16. i say uniodised to mean salt that is not ordinary table salt which as the website says contains other stuff which is harmful. Check your salt container and see if there is antickaing agents etc. Plain uniodised salt or rocksalt should be available at the supermarket or a tonic salt from the pet store. I use 1 Tablespoon per 20 Litres. If you've got plants , the tolerance is around 1000mg/L (1t=5500mg) so 1T per 20L is fine with that also. (1.2T would be ok) especially short term then it will dilute with water changes. good luck.
  17. congrats on the new additions! My daughter and I looked at some opalines today but instead got two pearls. Salt - I use salt with all new fish - just something I do .. UNIODISED plain salt.
  18. wow - absolutely stunnign kiwplymouth! I look forward to the day when they are more available and cheaper to buy .. perhaps that day will never come but who knows. In the meantime I have to make do with my choc zebra, while pretty in itself no where near as dramatic. he's easy to spot though in the early evening when he comes out to play. I love my lil choc zebbie who is called ... "Zebbie" - lol. Only my fav fish get named now.
  19. oh poor thing. SO glad you've got him now though. Any ideas how old?
  20. i wonder if it's the same lot they first got in last year or a new lot . very stunning fish!
  21. I have had that happen , about 20 years ago so I don't remember what brand the heater was. But when I came home to find a tank of boiled fish I was most distressed and didn't start a new tank for 20 years! SO I'm really paranoid about it now and always try to buy jager if I can and check the water several times a day to make sure nothing is amiss! Personally I don't like the look of the elite anyway.
  22. lol - me too. I got L1, L2, and L3 credits for two days first aid course.
