  1. a 150W jager heater should be fine in a 150L tank. That's what i run in my 170L tank and the temp is steady at 26oC. Very pleased with the jagers.
  2. I think the world will eventually come to an end. But when is anybody's guess.. and a guess is all it is. Why worry, just get on with life. If the recent disasters are frightening people, even if just a little. I say take a look at your life and make every day with loved ones more meaningful. Saying goodbye before leaving for work instead of just disappearing out the door. Settling arguments sooner rather than later. Even sucking it up sometimes to re-establish relationships that have gone sour. Get out there and enjoy life. and of 2012:
  3. maybe I used the wrong terminology but my eheim jager looks like this with a red pointer dial thingee and a blue one that turns also. http://www.letsbuyit.co.uk/eheim/heater ... 22888.html
  4. it's one of the reasons jager appealed to me. Just move the red dial so it points to the correct temperature. The you can adjust the blue dial to the temp you want.
  5. a small amount twice a day because I have smallish fish. up to 5 times a day when they have fry. One day a week I fast them and follow it up with squashed peas. Bottom dwellers most nights but not every night - probably 5 times a week. Eel, every 2nd day.
  6. very sorry to hear about your choc zebra. They are a neat little fish . I have one that loves anything I give him to eat but is particularly fond of shrimp pellets and whatever bloodworms make it to the bottom before the other fish get it. He will swoop over the other bottom dwellers to make sure he gets his meat absed food! Typically he will push the kuhlis and otos out of the way for his meal but is more polite when it's just plain vege based. (yes my otos do eat the protein as well as algae wafers I give them)
  7. nope - but that combination of names clearly made me think of stargate .. and as it turns out I was right!
  8. so it is. http://www.gateworld.net/wiki/Kree Kree Goa'uld term with several possible meanings, depending on context, including "listen up," "attention," "concentrate," or "yoo-hoo!" The term is commonly used by Goa'uld, Jaffa and Tok'ra in authority to call their men to attention. so ... are we looking at Stargate names???
  9. I'm still convinced there is a STARGATE connection.. so i did a little google: Ba'al - one of the stargate system lords Anubis - a powerful Goua'ld system lord.. he replaces apophis as the main enemy. Loki - part of the asgard (these guys look like your skinny , big headed , black eyed aliens) , he abducted humans from Earth Thor - commander of the asgard fleet Kree... ??? but "shel kree" means shut up in Jaffa (Tealcs race)
  10. they actually sound like STARGATE names. I used to watch that and loved it. Te'alc was my fav character.
  11. pH 7.0 seems to be pH that a lot of tropcial fish are happy with but for most community tanks it doesn't matter if it's a little below or above as long as it's stable. I too was told to aim for pH7.0 but my community tank has settled around 7.2-7.4 and that suits me and my fish fine.
  12. welcome, tell us a bit about your fish

    yo

well if THE Jackie Chan can teach his catfish tricks anything is possible! welcome!
  14. I've read mixed opinions on the net about pimafix and melafix for using with labyrinth fish but i wanted first hand experience. Well anyway I've gone ahead and treated the betta in the QT. It hasn't killed her but she's not looking good either, don't know if it's the pimafix or the fungus which seems to be growing at an alarming rate.. around her lower gill area. She's very lethargic today and just floating about on top of the water. There's a guppy in the tank as well and it hasn't slowed her down so I don't think it's sedating them!
  15. thanks for your reply adrienne , I have added salt to the main tank after I lost my first guppy but maybe I need to up the dosage.
  16. I'm doing my water changes today, any advice on whether to use pimafix ? Today "river" the betta is looking opposite to bloated, if anything I think she's looking a bit skinny! and I think i detect a tiny but of white fungus on her dorsal and a tiny hairlike stringy bit from one of her gills. I'm thinking I might need to put her in the QT tank now but treat her with what? .. and can i still use pimafix in the main tank (gourami in there)
  17. Hi Tabrat welcome! livebearers are great cycling fish. I started my first tank with 3 guppies. It's a good idea to buy a small basic quarantine/hospital tank at some stage if you can. Not sure how silver dollars go with guppies. I have no idea if they would eat them or not but you could always put a few guppies into the spare tank if you had one ;-)
  18. I recently lost a female guppy to what looked like dropsy. A month ago I lost another guppy and a few weeks before that as well. I've been maintaining the water changes and keeping an eye on parameters and they all seem ok. My female fighter has been a bit sluggish in the last day but still eating and swimming around. She has no signs of bloat but she doesn't quite look right either - I can't quite put my finger on it. I was thinking of adding pimafix to the water. More as a mild antibacterial in case there's something in the water. I don't want to overkill with furan 2 just yet. Can pimafix be safely used with betta and gourami? (either now or as a reference for future use)Is this a sensible option to take or should I be looking at treating the whole tank with something else. I realise Pimafix is sold as an antifungal remedy but it also says it treats internal and external bacterial infections. I doubt it will be very effective on internal infections but who knows. Thinking more about bacteria in the water column. Is it going to wipe out my filter bacteria? I've got TLC to help it get back on track. There are also otos, kuhlis, hypancistrus, and whiptail in the tank so want to cautious with what I use.
  19. a lot but not all of my fish are named.. just makes it easier to refer to them ,.. rather than "the red tuxedo with the golden body not the gray body" or whatever. "slim shady" is easier than saying the kuhli with the inverted V marking. lol.. some of the strangest names come from my daughter.
  20. agree.. there's So many of them. Even if they put them into a separate coldwater section. it would be great if they divided into: coldwater , tropical , marine I have suggested it ebfore in the category suggestions.

    waste control?

is it just a bacteria supplement like TLC ? (which also says will control excess organic sludge)
  22. wow... hence why i don't buy expensive fish!
  23. I'd buy them for under $100 but I'm a bit of a cheapie when it comes to fish. I haven't paid more than $45 for a fish. I'm just not that a good fishkeeper to invest in expensive fish - too scared I'll do something wrong and kill them!
  24. man I have tried to grow some mozzie larvae but my cat keeps drinking from the water bucket and probably ingesting any mozzie floats. I've given up after two months! We have plenty of shrimp across the road in the ponds.. just don't know if they are freshwater or not.. there are also the dreaded gambusia and other larger fish and some eels. At least some of the mulitiple ponds are manmade to add to the feel of the environment. But some are bordering or nearby mangrove /estuary inlets so might be brackish? Up at the reserve I believe it is fresh pond on one side of the road and seawater on the other. Not sure on that though. Where we are the ponds are inhabited by ducks and pukeko with herons and kingfishers occasionally coming to visit. Swans and ducks and geese are at the reserve ponds a 15 minute walk down the rd. yeah - lots of water around us. Then there is the estuary/harbour. ..(Peninsula)
