  1. maybe my jar of it is yucky or something, my guppies eat everything else like pigs but they wont touch it
  2. very cool i like the way his body is plain too, so its not too over the top.
  3. is that the freeze dried tubifex? Not one of my fish will touch those, even the guppy-pigs. They love frozen bloodworms, just don't overfeed them, and mosquito larvae - if you leave a bucket of water out it'll fill with them
  4. hehe, they're funny how tough they act at their reflections
  5. i don't think i've posted any of him, he's on my avatar though <-- nope they don't get stressed by it, just do it for a few minutes at a time. Halfmoons are encouraged to flare at each other lots when they're young to help strengthen their tails.
  6. you can still buy ice plants here, so they must be legal to sell still.
  7. i've never seen a fighter i wanted as much as my boy, he's so purdy and friendly, i show him off to all my visitors There's something about their nature that makes them so appealing, no matter how they look. I hope david will keep breeding once babies settled in Jfishfanatics fighters are stunning too :bounce: I saved this pic off aquabid ages ago, sorry i can't credit it to wherever it came from, but the colour is amazing - http://ruapehucatrescue.googlepages.com/p1912018.jpg
  8. welcome how about posting a fish list each month like hollywood do sometimes, so we can see if there's anything we're looking for and come in?
  9. can't beat gerberas for picking flowers some violas would be nice too, because they'll seed everywhere and you'll find them popping up in all the little cracks next year. And you could put some pretty veges in there too, that rainbow silverbeet looks nice. We'll want pics
  10. oh and there's doubletail too, when the tail is split into two down the middle
  11. posting a photo would let us give you some idea, even better if you can get one of him with his tail out showing off for the mirror (flaring). Crowntails have longer rays in their fins, that extend past the webbing. Plakats have short tails, as mentioned, and can be any of the other types as well. Veiltails are the type most commonly seen at pet shops, with tails that hang/trail behind them like a veil, and don't fan out. Deltatails have tails that spread out like a fan, superdeltas spread really wide, almost up to 180 degrees, and halfmoons spread to 180 degrees wide, so you can draw a straight line between the top and bottom edge of their tails. <-- halfmoon figure out which one sounds most like your boy, then take a look here http://bettysplendens.com/articles/catview.imp?catid=857 for pics to confirm
  12. they haven't reverted to rubbish! they're wonderful guppies in their own way, almost like a seperate species compared to the fancies. But its hard to find nice ones that don't throw babies with signs of fancy breeding - half black, big tails etc. Should we settle on calling them mongrel fancy guppies, fixed strain bred fancy guppies, and wild-type guppies? Of course lots of muddled up crossbred fancy guppies are nice enough to be bred into a new strain, so then they'd become fixed fancy guppies too.
  13. you need a male, then she'll lay the eggs, he'll fertilise them as they come out, then both parents and all the other fish will eat them Do a search for breeding danios and there should be some good threads covering how to go about it if you want fry
  14. yep i was reading that online earlier, it set my partner off ranting again about how much our council sucks compared to every other one
  15. i thought fancy guppy = not wild pure/fixed strain fancy guppy for ones that breed true.
  16. oh and wild guppies have clear tails, sometimes with swords, and mongrol fancy guppies can have wild colouring.
  17. wild guppies are small, rainbow coloured and have short tails. Fancy guppies have fancy tails - long or different shaped, special colours and patterns etc, and are bigger.
  18. if i was you i'd grab the chance to give the tank a full clean out while its empty. Stick the filter on the other tank while you do it, then empty it and give it a good scrub, take a good look at the substrate and decide if you want to change it, then set it up nice and clean for your tropicals. And don't clean it with anything but water and elbow grease
  19. Oh and she's also passed all the details on to the horizons environmental head person so he can look into it too. Apparently he doesn't get on with the river engineers, why am i not suprised lol.
  20. yup nikau and kowhai were on the list too. The woman as DOC has just rung back, she'd pulled up all the records on the other blocks of land involved, and there's no clear ownership. Sound as though it was surveyed by the crown and allocated block numbers, but never formally owned by anyone except the iwi who owned it before that. So there's a good case for them to lay claim to it. It also went into the river at some stage, and is now built up again, so it could legally be considered river bed too. She also confirmed our suspicions over our rights on our part of the land, that they can't just come along and tear trees down when we've said we don't want them too. They need to get a special resource consent to work on it against our wishes, and there are public notification rules that haven't been met either. So all looking good
  21. looks just like a baby of our furcatus rainbows i'd love to have him if he'll be for sale?
  22. yeah i'm calling it a wetlands to everyone else now, it does sound more attractive. Just found a lovely list on the horizons planning guildlines of what trees should be planted there, and further along the river where its mud - totora, cabbage trees, flax, tea tree etc.
  23. cool! so lets see some killies on tv one day :bounce:
  24. good news just been and spoken to people from the marae, turns out they have their own organisation and office in town for exactly this sort of thing. They've just finished a battle with horizons over another issue, and won of course, and are ready to tear into this :bounce: They were as outraged as we are about horizons plans, and have battled them over lots of similar sites before. So we're sorted now i think. The woman in charge of river and river edge management is ringing me soon
