  1. Hi thanks for all your input, I have got a new light for the tank (2nd hand but new to me!) and the small light is now one of my small coldwater tanks. The light is 20w and is a 2cm longer than my tank it clearly puts out more light, I don't know if it is the perfect light but for $15 it was a deal I could not pass up!
  2. my 4 tanks are all trade me do-up's, and I say that because the cheapest way to get a tank on trade me is to buy a tank which has no frill's otherwise the sellers seem to get some crazy ideas on what the tank is worth. But as others have said heaters, filters and other items that fish’s lives depend on are best to be brought new! P.S don't buy a fish because its cheap as you will be stuck with it for as long as it lives, Wait and buy what you want.
  3. ok so I have looked on the net (googled CO2 in aquariums) and found lots of pages each using sugar, water and yeast. The problem is that each site gives different amounts of the ingredients needed. Any "tips of the trade" on how much of what, and/or is there a better way of making CO2 for plants
  4. I dont have any idea sorry, but in the future if a shop keeper drops a fish don't buy it!
  5. here are the photos of the tank...
  6. please note: I now agree to little light also whats a CO2 line???????? carbon dioxide right!
  7. hi phoenix44, its approx. 35cm deep.
  8. Ok? Thanks as I've said "I know nothing" about plants or lights but love the look. But from what I can see the tank is very well lit, and since starting this post the stems have taken to the tank great. (Some were droopy after postage but as of today the have all stood them selves up again Second opinion someone as when looking at peoples photos of planted tanks my tank seems brighter? - If anyone is interested in selling a light that is "correct for my tank" please PM me
  9. substrate: aquarium sand Lighting: masterpet 9w, the buld reads biax f9bx/840 and under that f9bx/spx41 and on the plastic bit 171b (I understand this may be a uv light? also the tank is near a window and for 2-3 hours a day gets sunlight. Plants (stems): this is the list that came with them. 2 alternanthera 2 " " rubra 2 geg anter? (the hand writing is bad) 2 amplexicaulis type a 2 " " monnieria 1 cardamine lyrata 4 heteranthera zosteraefolia 5 hygrophila angustifolia and the list goes on 1 of this 1 of that etc. (its all just alot of letters to me)
  10. Ok, as of today I now have a 90L tank fully planted with plenty of lighting. The plants/cuttings have been planted in to 4cm (approx) of aquarium sand and there is only 10 fish in the tank at the moment. (plants are just cuttings from TM) So is there anything I'm doing wrong, what can I do to help the plants grow.
  11. welcome I have paradise fish as well
  12. Hi, I have re-done my 100L aquarium ready for tropical fish, it currently has a sand substrate and the tropical plants are on there way from trade me. So anyway what are some good breeds of fish that I could keep, I have a idea in my head of some bright colourful fish swimming in schools.

    best filter?

my tanks are 60l, maybe I just need some more gravel? :-?

    best filter?

hi guys I currently have 3 tanks all with under gravel filters, But I really hate the ugly plastic tubes and they are not good as I'm trying to fill the tanks with live plants. So what’s the BEST type of filter for me and my tanks, keeping in mind that I have paradise fish that don’t like strong currents (Excluding external filters unless you want to give me one  as I don’t have that sort of cash)
  16. Hi I have a golden bell frog and I feed him/her earthworms, golden & southern bells eat pretty much anything that moves and can fit in there mouths. (I had some brown tree frogs and ended up selling them because they were so hard to feed) :bounce:
  17. Hi, I have just got some paradise fish off a HBAS member and have asked him for any tips and he gave me some. I've also done a bit of research on the net but I know from experience that you can’t always trust the internet so does anyone have any tips on this species. Should this post be here or in the Tropical area? As Paradise Fish are sort of both.
  18. I'm waiting to hear from my grandma as she is going down that way next weekend, so I might be able to get her to pick them up for me then. otherwise I'll wait for Mark's daughter to come up.
  19. Yes that sounds great, The more plants the better as I will have 4 tanks as of Wednesday Out of the 3 current tanks only one (the one above) has live plants. Also my tank that’s coming from Auckland on Wednesday is just that a “tank” it will have no gravel etc. what is the best form of substrate for plants to grow in. I am thinking of getting a better form of filtration but not sure what to get I did have a hang on the back filter but it pushed all the fish to the bottom (my brother has it now)
  20. Great tank!!!! what fish/plants have you got in there, looks great
  21. hi, some moss would be good thanks will you bring it to the AGM? and does anyone have some tips on keeping plants looking good!
  22. Sadly today when I turned the tank light on I found that 1 of my 5 new danios had died, The rest look healthy but I noticed this one had a funny body shape rather than being strait he had a lump just behind his head and a sucked in bit underneath. Was he a “runt” or is this a health problem as I said above the rest look fine and are swimming around like darts, this one always looked to be slower than the rest often stopping and sitting on the bottom. (He was the first that the pet store lady caught) Please Note: I don’t know if it was a he or a she.
