  1. Tropical Fish The Basics: (my opinion anyway) To start with: set-up your tank just as you did with your goldfish (cold tap water) add the water conditioner, stick the heater in turn her on and a way you go. Heat: use a aquarium heater (which cost $20+) these will have a in built thermostat which turns the heater on/off keeping the tank at one temp (set by you) most tropical fish need around 25'c. Fish: neons, sword tails, rocket pencils, guppies, clown loaches. Food: a good tropical fish flake, with some frozen or live food 1-2x per week (water flea, bloodworm, brine shrimp etc.) Water changes: remove 20% of the tank water per week and top it up with fresh stuff. Note: the only main deference between tropical and cold is the temp.
  2. Don’t' buy aqua one! They all seem to crack maybe buy separate, so you can get the best of everything as I hear the hoods (lights filters etc.) in those all in one deals are not always the best. while one "brand" might make a great tank they might make horrible filters. (just an idea)
  3. yip I get bored with my fish (goldfish) that’s why I brought another 2 tanks and got some Danios, and the Paradise Fish are on there way! Also as far as cost of running goes I try to stick with filters that run on airstones, so all my tanks can run on the one pump. Great! MTS ha ha!
  4. I'm (with help from this forum) changing from fake to real plants, and I know what you mean I'm been told live plants do great things but all mine seem to go brown and rot before doing anything I think I need more lights too, but they cost so much! does anyone know where to buy cheap lights.
  5. Note: the goldfish in photo 1 have moved, the tank now has Zebra and Leopard danios and a Chinese algae eater.
  6. Chopped up Eskimos make great lollie cake!!!
  7. I have began to upgrade tank 1, before Now yes ive added driftwood, live plants but I still have 2 more (soon 3) to upgrade so keep the ideas coming (I don't mind people PM'ing me but why not post it as it may help others out too!)
  8. hi all, my 3 coldwater tanks (soon to be 4) are very boring looking with just gravel and fake plants, I figure that if there boring for me to look at they must be for the fish as well! 2 tanks have goldfish and one has some Zebra and Leopard danios. I think maybe some driftwood, rocks and live plants could look nice but don’t really know where to start! - the tanks at the National Aquarium with tree roots coming down look great, can this be achieved with smaller tanks.
  9. THANKS EVERYONE I now have a tank with 5 zebra dainos and an algae eater + a 2nd hand tank off trade me set-up ready for Paradise Fish. However my tanks are very boring looking, what could I do to improve this . . . I do have a large amount of aquarium sand Also if you have a good looking coldwater tank I’d love to see it!!!!!
  10. I would think that if a tank breaks because of a move it would do so within a 1 hour after moving. if your tanks have been breaking after this maybe its something else, Lucy does your tank have ... 1 heavy rocks (fake ones are good as they weigh very little) 2 a foam board to sit on 3 the correct amount of water 4 a strong sturdy stand I say the correct amount of water because if its to high airstones can flick tiny drops of water everywhere which after a while can ruin the stand. These could all be factors, I did make a comment above has anyone given this any thought, how many ml's thick is the glass on aqua one tanks?
  11. What I meant by: "it’s best to select a spot for your tank that’s suitable all year round." was that if you do place the tank in the perfect spot you will not need to move it at all, possibly the reason for some of the tanks breaking is that they are been moved to much/often. (you cant help it if your moving house) -please if your going to "Quote" this quote the whole thing so people dont miss the point, above is a perfect example, yes Imsmith you should empty it because if you read my other messages then you would see that thats what I've been saying all along!.
  12. Hi, just adding to what I said above. Because emptying a tank is a real hassle and is bad for the natural cycle of the tank its best to select a spot for your tank that’s suitable all year round.
  13. Hi Zev yes me and my brother are just joining HBAS (we handed in are forms last meeting) and yes i would be intrested in the fish with price in mind.
  14. I by fish & related stuff on Trade Me all the time, as it seems more organised, easier contact, prices are clear and has a great search bar for finding exactly what you want. The main downside is that there are a lot of people who don’t know what there talking about. hope this helps
  15. what kind of person lets a fish get so sick
  16. Hi Lucy, the way I move my tanks is by taking everything out and lifting them, this means the only weight on the bottom glass is the weight of its self. the only other way I can think of moving a tank without taking it apart is by putting the whole tank on wheels permanently (they would have to be pretty strong wheels though) :bounce:
  17. I stick to the good old fashion tanks, the ones with four pieces of glass joined at the corners as the worst thing that’s ever happened to me (touch wood) is the silicone on one side sprung a leak! I was able to take out the fish, water and the next day I resealed it. Also about putting foam etc. under tanks I use a thick carpet underlay and avoid putting heavy rocks in my tank. this might help? also forgot to say my tanks are only 60x30x30 and have 5ml thick glass, I've noticed alot of Aqua One tanks have very thin glass (mine might be extra thick? but better to be safe than sorry)

  19. Hi, can anyone fill me in on why under pest plants on the main FNZAS page there is so many well known aquarium plants some that I've had myself in the past. for example oxy weed, I've had this in my tanks many times before then i could not find it for sale anymore this must be why.
  20. sorry, but whats Inanaga :-? are they whitebait?
  21. I raised 5 frogs from tadpoles, and found that fruit flies were not very good in the way of food as they were hard for the little guys to catch. mealworms are great!
  22. hi everyone, i have had 2 60x30x30 tanks for more than a year now. both tanks had 5 goldfish in them one with fantails and one with comets. they fantails have got to big for there tank and as of today have been moved into a much larger tank. so now I have a every fishkeepers dream, a empty tank and would like to hear from anyone who has any ideas on what to put in it (I would like to stick with coldwater and/or goldfish) Also my cousin has these cool looking fish I think there called paradise fish? She does not no anything about them and keeps them I a small fish bowl (I tell her she’s cruel) could these be a good fish to keep in my spare tank?
