Here you go taken tonight. Had to use all manner of temptations to bring him out of his new "fish cave". I've had him 16 months and bought him at 2" and now about 8"

Yeah at start I really wanted a JD and figured it was a hybrid. But then this fish stole my heart with its personality. Only fish I have ever had that has to charge at it's food and splash at the surface then dive quickly back down and repeat again and again....... I've got pretty wet several times by not closing the tank lid fast enough :slfg: Now he/she is in a old style glass tank with the gaps and water is being flicked onto the carpet!!!

The fellow below was sold to me as a JD but as he/she grew I started to believe that he/she wasn't 100% JD. I think he/she may be a Convict x JD. He/she is now pretty big (photo taken 1 year ago) and a chunky looking fish. Thoughts?

    The What's Up? thread.

Tested for gh/kh and nitrates Sam?
  5. I went against the norm and currently have 2 clown loaches in the 430. I also have 2 zodiac loaches who are characters as well. I did plan to get more but when big enough they will go in with my larger south americans.
  6. I have clown loaches in my planted tank and don't see them eating plants. A plant I got a while ago had ramshorn snails on it but the loaches saw to them and I haven't seen any new snails. You could always trade the loaches when they get too big
  7. Thanks for the advice guys. Will test it tomorrow. -K.
  8. Thanks guys Does silicone need to be redone every 5 years?
  9. tank is 1200x50x50 It looks very well made, well braced etc just the one query regarding the silicone. Have gone back to standard glass tanks this year after using Aqua One acrylic tanks for years.
  10. Hi Have bought a secondhand glass tank and I cannot feel any silicone in the corners inside the tank. Is this ok? I am used to seeing and feeling the silicone in tanks. Was told the tank was used up until 6 weeks ago. Thanks Karina.
  11. I can understand where your wife is coming from. My leg is in a brace so my husband had to do the water changes. Let's just say that my supervising prevented a number of potential accidents
  12. Your background sure gives it depth Zeebee. Looks good

    Gravel colour

I do have 3/4 of a bucket of a fine gravel that is mostly grey with bits of brown from a tank I pulled down a few months ago. Don't think you can get it anymore but I have always liked it. Seen on trade me a gravel called "shadow" that looks similar to it. Will look into brightwater though. Options for gravel in LFS around Hamilton is pretty limited.

    Gravel colour

Hi I am setting up a bigger tank for my JD, Severum and Gold Saum. Decided to move away from sand as its a pain in the butt. Any recommendations on the best colour for the gravel? I was thinking a dark grey. Cheers Karina

    The What's Up? thread.

I went to our SPCA today and saw and held a kitty that instantly clicked with me. Problem is it is a female and we thought we would get a male. We already have a male and female which love to hate each other - boy is irritating to girl. I am wondering if it would work. Kitty is very sweet.

    Co2 question

Hi Glenn I have: Tiger lotus 60cm (with 2 pups) Cabomba Java fern Indian fern Crypts Hydro Amazonicus horizontalis Anubias Christmas moss Amazon swords Another one like babies tears, forgot the name of it. What plants are your clowns destroying?
  17. Hi No haven't set up a pressurised system yet. Currently quite happy dosing with flourish excel daily. I know a pressurised system is cheaper in the long run. But my focus at the moment is finding another 4ft tank for my large South Americans. Have 3 amazon swords with runners up at the moment so will need to thin out on swords soon. Tiger Lotus is now at water surface height (60cm) with 2 pups

    Co2 question

No problems here with clowns and plants. They are fed a variety of foods. Perhaps that is the key? I have a photoperiod of 6 hrs and dose 20ml flourish excel daily. I currently have 3 swords put up runners.
  19. Gutted that your FH died Henward. I would have taken him but what was holding me back was I have not found a suitable bigger tank yet. What a waste of such a beautiful fish. Sure are some idiots out there.
  20. Zeebee I have had a few aqua one tanks over the years and have never seen anything like that. Does not look like algae to me. Who did you buy it from? Look into the consumer guarantees act. Need any help let me know.
  21. Yuck! Not a fan of spiders. We have these guys try to make webs on our deck. My husband sees brown forest spiders in our garden all the time.
  22. I'd say it would be high phosphates Graham. Phosphate is nasty to plants and algae loves it. I used to tie my java fern on with black cotton string and the babies now I just poke it wherever I want. Got too many baby plants ATM so a workmate gets some freebies. My 2 largest swords have just sent up flower stems too exciting!
  23. Our dog thanks to my husband learnt "pull my finger" first pretty quickly. He (the dog) does it all the time and seems to think its funny! :gigl: He has also learnt stay, lay down, sit, wait, go toilet, twirl, rollover, speak, go slow, be quiet etc Pretty smart doggy
  24. Zeebee I had a brown algae breakout in my 430 very recently. I put phosphate remover media in my filter. Used API algae stuff and closed the nearby curtain to block out natural light. After 5 days all the brown algae was gone and my fish were happy throughout the whole process By the way I left my T5 on their 8 hour setting.
  25. I was just thinking of this too a couple of nights ago. Even if you search for large you still get the 90 x 30 x 30's  Don't have all night to sift out the crap
