    Dropsy?

i find it hard to kill a fish... the ones that ive had to put out of their misery ive isolated them into a seperate container ... and put them in the freezer ... i know it sounds cruel... it it lowers their body temperature and they go to sleep..dont freeze them solid tho! ive only had to do it once.. but it beats stomping them etc
  2. they will be fine together being able to see each other... id do the card thing... so that they can only see each other for a set amount of time that way they dont get worn out from flaring so much this also supposidly encourages decent fin growth giving more full fin spread
  3. if she had dropsy her scales would be poking out.. looking like a little fish christmas tree! know this from experience...unfortunatly had a couple die from it she just sounds like she egg laden.... if the gets over full they should just drop..specially if you have a male outside the net to entice her.. you could try spawn her.. but she prob too big for the male to wrap around... so she might endup getting hurt id let her drop them then try spawn her after that goodluk
  4. room stil not constructed yet.... waiting on time to actually start ;( work has been too flat tak to do much apart from the h20 changes and feeding il take some piks of fry tomorrow night after WC and post up anyone had any more spawns? thought i had another spawn tonight..couple eggs on ground but nothing much in the nest.. could have been interesting... hm blue mask male with green hm female.. well see over next few days what happens
  5. very nice growth there congrads if your looking to get the tanks a little more empty while your away i can always fish sit for you... just be the fact they would get a plane trip to visit and get to meet my fighters lmao
  6. from what they look like they are growing way faster than my halfmoon spawn which were layed on the same week. mine are growing steadily.. but have only been feeding microworms and brine shrimp occ ... starting to feed brineshrimp one feed and one feed microworms per day now
  7. they look good... good range of colors makes a change to all the fry being similar ...hope my second spawn throws differnt colors like that one
  8. hey there try using some indian almond leaf to condition the water. these also trigger breeding/bubble nest breeding (also making the males a bit more agressive) turn your filter down very low drop your water level to about 4inches lay some fine gravel over the base of your tank (gouramis dont like reflections) they wont breed if they can see them selves usually give the female a pot or something to hide in etc ive just recently spawned 500 or so honey dwarf gouramis
  9. is nothing breeding at mo? seems odd... but most my fighters seem to be going thru a dry patch... not even blowing bubble nests at mo.. going to set another couple of spawn tanks up over the next few days/weekend and see if i can get a few more spawns going should have a good variety of colors coming out hopefully
  10. hey guys... ive had another pure halfmoon spawn.. not huge numbers... prob 50 or so.. spawned a black hm female with a blue mask male (ex Davids fish) too small to photograph gouramis still pretty small at this stage (only a week or so old) just looks like a huge spawn of fighters.. prob a good 400 or so of them looks amazing in the tank to see soo many fry il try and get a photograph of them tomorrow the other spawn i have of pure orange/red halfmoons is growing quickly now.. il def be able to get some piks of them tomorrow prob a good 30ish.. havent tried to count.. the occational one deciding to kick the bucket and die .. but doing well for coming up 7-8weeks (slow growing due to feeding microworms mainly)
  11. hey guys wondering how everyone is going with breeding etc? im in process of building a fish breeding room...well will be soon to increase breeding in tempory room.... have tank full of honey dwarf gourami babies tank of halfmoon fighter fry... but want more spawns!! have lots of potenial breeders just taking time to condition and grow them
  12. theyre tiny! i finally managed to get a pik of some of my fry last nite.. wil post up when get a chance
  13. Hi James! ive got some halfmoons that are about 6 weeks old.. but are too younge to sell at moment will keep you posted failing that try animates moorhouse.. they may order a pair in for you specifically... havent had much available lately tho regards Kris
  14. unfortunately early days yet.. hopefuly ul get couple that survive.. of the spawn ive got they are about 5-6weeks old now.. have had numbers fall off a bit but seem to be stable now...prob a good 30+ at moment were abut 70ish to start with tho.. one of my spawns i managed to get 178 fry to survive to adolescents
  15. oh congrads good to see some spawns coming along
  16. Hey Ashley the first lot of halfmoon fry are doing well ...have had minimal falloff in numbers still prob about 50 or so of the buggers swimming and eating Havent had anyother spawns since this as have slowed down due to the fact that were moving this weekend. so will take me a wee bit to get all setup again will get the rest of tanks setup once there and get my fish room constructed and setup before transfering stock over will look at breeding once im settled into the new place how your fish going? regards KRis
  17. unfortunately one of my female halfmoon breeders passed away this week due to dropsy too... spotted it early but couldnt save her ... guessing its blood worms once again down side of conditioning them up i guess.............
  18. hey guys... on the metro topic.. does any one have a small supply i can purchase for my fish medical kit? doesnt hurt to have some waiting so can act fast.. ive had no luck here in chch ive heard you can get this in straight power too.... some thing they use for anti parasitic treatment in pigs etc
  19. hmmmmmmmmm thats like 410 teaspoons of salt or should we say 2050grams of salt!!!!! not too bad considering the tidal mussle cabinets we service at work which are about 170litres take 2.6kg or salt per day
  20. hey there you can safely cut it down and use the existing ballast... you can downsise the tube on ballasts you just cant up size... as the ballast is just a transformer as such... meaning a larger tube would draw too much current(watts) , a smaller one would just case the ballast to work less... therefore get more thermal effeciency (not get as hot during use) im currently running a 2x58w ballast to power up my two aqua one fighter tanks... (only using 2 x 18w tubes) this has been working perfect for almost a year on the same bulbs.. time to change them now tho hope this helps
  21. hmmm he could have caught it on something and ripped it? they generally thin and frail id put some melafix in the water to help heal and stop infection
  22. if you suspect hes a canibal fry or eating all the food not letting the others get any you should seperate him to give the others a chance.. small amount generally die off and fighters grow at different rates.. always try seperate the big from small that mg / black hm spawn... prob got about 15eggs left.. unknown if fertilized yet as not sprouted tails have had another spawn this time with the black butterfly halfmoon and mg hm female not a heap of eggs but daddy is now the surrogate to the first spawn of eggs as the first male decided to give up and laze around not picking them up.. hes accepted them and now tending to them as if they were his! (cheating i know) hopefully there a few little tails dangling from the nest tonight when i get home or tomorrow
  23. yay another large spawn! courtisy of a black hm female and a mustard gas hm male (ex Davids ) hopefully they fertilized this time
  24. nice setup wouldnt mind doing something similar for my growout tanks once setup in my fish room.. seems easier than doing seperate tank water changes all day every day even the aqua one setup is rather labour intensive!
  25. thats true .. most fish will grow faster if they are in a larger enviroment and have adequate water changes rather than being crammed into a smaller overcrowded tank and have to fight for food seperate tanks are always good just alot of work!
