  1. I'm in the process of purchasing a gold axolotl online and the cheapest postage option will take up to 3 days (from Tauranga to Nelson). Will he be fine for that long? I've never had fish shipped to me before.
  2. Level 1, 170 credits (if I added correctly. 81 before externals). Highest marks for all horticulture tests although looking at my tank plants you wouldn't have guessed it.
  3. This makes it hard for axolotls to get a grip and can stress them out. You should have at least part substrate, as you recommended.
  4. There is a myth that baking carbon will released the absorbed material making it reusable. In actual fact a household oven wont be hot enough to do this and you will more likely start a fire.
  5. It's not truly aquatic is it? It died in my old tank.
  6. No point in using feeder fish in my opinion. Axolotls will live healthily on a diet of frozen staple foods and the occasional bloodworms or frozen shrimp.
  7. Thanks Stella I will look into that. Did a bit of a Google for pictures. Is it found in most streams throughout New Zealand?
  8. The axolotl tucker is good stuff if you can find it. I don't like the idea of feeding axolotls land animals as it just doesn't seem like a natural diet. It should be fairly easy however to switch to a staple diet of frozen axolotl food or pellets with occasional treats such as bloodworms.
  9. Some of the most reputable axolotl and aquarium websites such as http://www.axolotl.org state that a tank of your size (2 foot/54 litre/15 gallons) is fine for one axolotl but I would only keep one in that size. 2 would probably be alright in a 3 foot but a 4 foot tank would be better. Remember to have good filtration but not too much current. An internal filter with a spray bar or small canister filter is ideal. Another good idea when keeping axolotls is to use sand as a substrate. Gravel can become stuck inside an axolotl is accidentally ingested whilst eating and large stones can become clogged and dirty easily. Hope that helps.
  10. I'm in the process of setting up my axolotl tank, as I know they don't like too much light I thought about adding some duckweed on top of the water to keep it shaded a bit. I would keep on top of it so it doesn't completely cover the surface and prevent other plants from getting light. What are some other sturdy cold water plants that are unlikely to be heavily damaged by an axolotl and don't require a large amount of care? Thanks everyone.
  11. Hello all. I'm new to cichlids and I have what I beleivce to be a male and female keyhole cichlid, I don't think they are a pair. Today I bought another keyhole for my tank but is has been chased into hiding by my original 2 keyholes. Do you thing the agression between the keyholes will end over time? The new one seems to be ok if he stays on the opposite side of the tank.
  12. Ember tetras are nice and seem to school reasonably tightly.
  13. We have red/brown shavers and they are excellent layers, there eggs are so big that they don't fit in the egg cartons properly. I used to have a silky bantam that never layed and a Japanese bantam which was also a good layer but layed quite small eggs. It's a good idea to invest in a large feeder and drinker so your not filling it up all the time. Ours get a mixture of pellets, wheat and bird grit as well as any vege scraps we give them. They are in a coop and run but they have enough space to still be classed as free range (I think) and we let them out most weekends.
  14. Thanks. They were both bright yellow and now the male is almost orange and the female is a washed out lemon. Good to know others have experienced similar things.
  15. About a month ago my golden bristlenose pair laid their first batch of eggs. Ever since the male has gained a lot of colour but the female seems to have lost some and is rather pale. They are both acting no different that usual but I was just wanting to know if anyone else had experienced similar things with their bristlenoses?
  16. We use the old emacs at school occasionally. I like the system but don't get to use them much.
  17. I'm not really into gaming and do enjoy playing around with imovie and garageband so I think I will get a mac. My current laptop runs a very slimmed down linux distro and it's still slow.
  18. Still have not fully decided between the two, mac and pc.
  19. $2500 was sort of a maximum stretch but I would prefer to keep it lower. I'm leaning towards the $2000 macbook pro 13".
  20. Although I won't be using it much outside the house I prefer to be able to just lie on the couch or bed and surf the net and do homework etc.
  21. It's gonna be a while till I can get all the money. Chances are anything recomended will be obsolete but it's still good to get opinions and ideas.
