  1. have a go, just be gentle take your time give her a chance to breath again and have another go. If you catch her just use a meat skewer open her mouth and have a look inside you'll see the babies in there. Another give away sign is her throat will be fuller than usual. If your squemish its not a very nice job, because you know its not fun for the poor fish but on the other hand if you strip her quickly get her back into the colony she can begin to put weight back on. ive stripped dems a couple of times with my class and now they the children are getting really good at identifying females that are holding.

  11. hey im using twin 54watt t5 18000k power Glos with a highly polished reflector. Question is and i know its been discussed but some direct communication here would be great! Is this too much light for my tank? it is 700mm high. Would this amount of light be the cause of sword leaves turning brown?

  17. Hi Mark, sorry to hear about your difficulty. THe good news is you have an awesome fish store right on your back yard. What i would recommend is keep the tank. Buy a small heater, and stock your tank with a couple of easy to grow plants, and a couple of real easy fish to keep like Guppies of Platties- both these fish can be very rewarding to keep especially for a beginner. This is a great way to start out as you get the enjoyment of watching your investment increase (plant growth and breeding fish) in value instead of decrease (dead fish). What ever you go for in the way of fish make sure they are small fish that get no bigger than 5cm when fully grown. The hardest thing about this hobby is dead fish. Joining this forum is a real good idea though as you will be able to get info from a great source of experienced fish keepers. All the best, post pics and let us know how it goes.
  18. Really great thread. Its one of those hurdles we have too jump over when we begin to think about taking our hobby seriously. The hobby would be nothing without the investment of committed breeders in this country to have gone to great expense for their passion. What is required is a strong trust relationship between the retailers/importers and the hobbyist. (made all the harder by the selling tactics of some lfs) So we can all move along together. It is also true about what Simian said, he will spend mega -offer them cheaply to hobbyist-and struggle to sell them. Thats one thing that seems to keep reoccurring. Hopefully an importer who is browsing this conversation will notice that there is genuine interest in improving the Zebra Pleco's plight in New Zealand. Question- i know that it is against site guidelines for forum members to try to form some sort of group to collectively get together and put their money where there mouth is. Does this rule apply to commercial users who can get a group of these fish here to petition a group hobbyist to perhaps cough up some sort of deposit to ensure genuine interest? possibly a prospect more flawed than realistic?
  19. Corydoras??? but not albino

  22. I know an 8 year old that would let that thing run all over his face, even in his mouth. one day he had a pockets full of live cockroaches and crickets!!! He has given himself the name 'Nature Boy'. He is a regular bug Steve Irwin. When he talks about his pet centipede other children are spell bound, they love it. Im his teacher so im trying to encourage him to learn as much about his passion as i can.
  23. Sounds real good to me What he said apart from Marilyn, Kings of Leon would have to be right up there, as well as Dave Dobyn
