  1. Bacterial by the looks of it. When water conditions are poor, the fish tend to rot away almost! Keep their water clean, and keep the water changes up. If things don't shape up, dose with furan. Instructions are on the packet.
  2. :tears: :an!gry That is shocking! :an!gry I hope you get him back! Inform local vets, pet stores etc etc SPCA and all. I'm pretty sure you have already done that.
  3. pretty colourful for a native
  4. Rusty likes prawns. Actually he likes any thing he knows he is not to have
  5. 4% body fat was it? You can't eat all that badly ahhaha
  6. wow. That is a lot of shrimp. I would like a couple of dozen shrimp, but can't find any here.
  7. I think babies would dislike both
  8. As you are well aware KP; I am first on the list, and always have been  I shall not forget
  9. Yikes! He looks over 20! In good hands now, so he can live out the rest of his days happily - or as happily as is possible under the circumstances. He is quite red though!
  10. It's actually 4.7 times. Too many times and the soap residue will kill the fish; too little and the nasties from the inert plastic will kill the fish.
  11. No! They'll probably kark it! Not to mention you need to feed them high in meat diets like prawn. Your dubs might get bloat, and never let the poor thing eat. They are terribly shy as is!
  12. yeah, but the key is to have a constant CO2 level. swings cause imbalances, and imbalances cause algae.
  13. It's good for what it is. I have 2-3 of them, but prefer to use the 3L bottles instead.
  14. playsand is light brown - mitre 10 silica sand is white - mitre 10 flourite sand is black - pet shop; expensive wanganui sand is black - free, but in wanganui. exoterra sand is either black, yellow, white or red / brick - expensive but available from a pet shop etc. erm.. beach sand is sandy in colour and free. different beaches have different colours of sand, but most sand will tend to keep the water at a slightly high pH.
  15. Depends from tank to tank. Takes a day for new leaves to pop up in my tank. In other tanks it might take 3 days to week at most. Again, depends on the plant. Crypts could take from days to weeks!
  16. Most of them are grown emersed. Some animates stores will have a mix of submersed and emersed plants. Most will have the emersed types though. It costs a fair bit more to purchase submersed plants wholesale. Plants will convert from emersed to submersed quite easily as long as you have the right light to sustain growth. Then there are some plants that are sold that are not even real aquatic plants. Good examples are 'borneo swords' that are peace lillies (aureum family I think) and the black / green mondo grass. You have to choose your plants based on your lights and tank requirements; not all plants were created equal and not all plants will work in just any tank. HTH
  17. Yeah, I'd be going smaller fish too and not larger ones. The tank looks great too, and that substrate is awesome! I would carefully contemplate plant placement because once they dig in and grow, altering anything is going to be a pain and hassle. Lots of whiptails would be brilliant!
  18. Welcome. You have setup the tank with a solid core structure that's for sure!
