  1. nothing wrong with small tanks at all! nanos can be amazingly hard to maintain and as such a true planted nano is a task for the more experienced aquarists. the need more maintenance, often can be more expensive as if you really want a real nano that is planted and life like, you need to invest in real good lighting, perfect looking substrate, the perfect plants, and most importantly great filtration. If i set up a nano for someone it usually has an eheim 2213 running on it, is always rimless and usually has t5's suspended above it. not a cheap task i must say. much harder to maintain as there is less water and so more room for error as the concentration of pollutants may be higher in a smaller volume of solution. plus the visual impact of some nanos are absolutely amazing.
  2. More dems maybe? only if your dems are still small and not mature. pair of julies or transcriptus may be nice too, but that's just my taste.
  3. I didn't do a gravel for about 2 years in my planted tank. biggest clean it got was when i moved house once a year. gravel stayed in the tank, all the fish and water came out. new water put in. that's about it. just did 30 - 50% water changes once a week or so. LOts of plants though.
  4. flaptop LOL  aww. i like the bright green and yellow ones.
  5. awwww... i want one too now! i used to catch the ild ones that were disease infexted in our back yard. feed them strawberries and then i used to let them go. definitely want a hedgehog or 2
  6. cause when you add salt to ice, it drops the temp to about -20 degrees C. its all chemistry dear caryl
  7. what he means is you should get a bigger tank  and you want a bigger tank now don't you? hnaahahhahahahaha
  8. such a post dragger upper, but ive been asked to update with new pics by many so here goes:
  9. my fridge 3 days and its going strong. 1 packet of ice, some salt and some water. presto
  10. lol. hardly. hahahaha. its just there is only so much available. then there are all those export and import restrictions. so naming them with L numbers were dropped so soem fish could be bought in to NZ. once they are here, they are sometimes given creative names- fine for someone who likes the look of a pleco - but if you really want to know what it is like me, then its a huge mission - especially with a fish like this - that could be any number of fish. any how here is a few more better pics now that they finished pigging out on a whole courgette -
  11. your betta must be happy in there. grass usually needs really high light, but who knows, if its growing well then maybe itll continue to do well.
  12. well it was either that or as the lovely lady said, "my my your hair is lovely, just like a well groomed afghan hound". well sam, are you getting this budgie? what colour one did you want>?
  13. those budgies were terrible to start off with. store bought and bit me all over. laid down the law and soon they were nice budgies. sadly these were the same 5 birds that got eaten by a cat in my current house, that is causing me paranoia  that pic is pretty old now - 3years old or so... I think. my hair is considerably longer ha ha. keep em budgies away from too much dampness and youll be sweet.
  14. welcome :bounce: i urge you to put your heater lower into the water. also that ornament is fake and you are right in needing something natural
  15. handfeed them. that is bound to work. dont be afraid if they bite you. its a bit of a shock but does not hurt at all. setting up tank is easy. use sand (builders sand looks nice). some large rocks to landscape with - nothing sharp. ps- i hope you have a 3ft - 4ft tank for them. cold water. get a good filter as they are messy as hell ha ha. do regular water changes and gravel vacs. surely you were not just sold the pets, and was given plenty info and care advise? what sort of tank is it?
  16. muttermutter general lol. shouldn't have to heat an out door one, with zebra finches in it. they do fine in the cold and the wild  dunno why yours were dying though.
  17. no. its the "ïmg" code you need to paste here
  18. 1 budgie only, and only if you are going to have him out all the time
  19. thank you so much for that enlightening post! perfectly said. im asking them on PC as well, some suggest they may be clown panaques. imm update on here when I find out more on there.
  20. well. i would have kept the fish as a display and not bred from it, unless i wanted them in my tank. probably not best to give them to just any one incase it makes its way back to public hands. oh well.
  21. laterite is awesome, ive used it, but at $120+ a kilo it does not come cheap. those jbl clay balls are great too. but in the past i used nothing too fancy.take some fine gravel, som medium and some large gravel (if you like the look). mix it. the fine will go at the base automatically, followed by m edium and large. that will help the plant roots establish - and over time fish poo will do its job and you won't need to siphon the gravel. remember to densly plant the tank if you undertake that course of action.
  22. yeah. leave it be, don't chase the pH unless its at a blisteringly terrible level. they will be fine
