  2. Mind you latin names aren't always simple, genera are always being reviewed and changed, different taxon being lumped in together or separated....
  3. The problem is that there is no logic or order to to common names, and they're usually meaningless. And you're right, they will never be consistent and you get several names for one species. Just look at the confusion in the posts about severums......
  4. Hey no cop-out answers like "any hip hop"!!! Its supposed to be a challenge, these must be bands that go beyond just mere annoyance or dislike. Surely there must be one rapper that stands out as being absolutely unbearable..
  5. Livingart is onto it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, learn your Latin!!! Common names are a joke really, it frustrates the hell out of me that the fish hobby is so insistent on using them.
  6. A friend got me to do this the other weekend, its actually a lot harder than it sounds... List the top five bands/artists that you absolutely hate the most. Not just dislike, but hate so much that you would walk out of a shop if they started playing them, the singers that just make you go aaaarrrgh and want to punch yourself in the head!! Mine (in no particular order): Robbie Williams. Nickelback. Limp Bizkit. Savage Garden. The Dixie Chix
  7. Prophecy I didn't pick you as being into that kinda music! (blink, millencolin etc Amen to that!! I love Bowie, in fact I've been listening to a lot of older music lately. CCR, the Beatles, the Stones, Small Faces, Manfred Mann, T-Rex etc. I even swtiched the radio at work over to solid gold because I got sick of the rock playing daughtry and nickleback. On that topic, actually, I'd better start another thread...
  8. Too hard, can't do it, it changes too often. The last 5 songs I listened to were; Less Than Jake - Look What Happened NOFX - Radio The Clash - White Riot Nirvana - I Hate Myself And Want To Die Ramones - R.A.M.O.N.E.S That was on my Ipod at the gym, so the playlist is usually pretty hard and fast. A few possible contenders for top 10 favourites would be; Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonnaise, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, Hummer NOFX - The Decline, Radio, Don't Call Me White The Clash - Train In Vain, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, Clash City Rockers Nirvana - About A Girl, Lithium, Serve The Servants, Verse Chorus Verse I don't think I could actually choose 10 songs and rank them 1-10...

    Compatability

Should be fine, sevs might grow a bit faster than surinamensis tho (I just can't call them suri's because it makes me think of suri cruise and her nutcase scientology father!)
  10. How old is Helen at HFF?? Must be getting into her mid-20's.

    Severums

The best part is that it was in with the green severums at Jansens Silverdale for the normal green severum price. I noticed the black bars and orangeish fins... So yeah, I guess it is a severum!!

    Severums

Well, what is a severum? The red-heads are an un-named member of the Heros genus, closely related to H. severus and possibly even a subspecies or colour varient of that species. Does that make them a severum? AFAIK there aren't any rules regarding common names, so if I decide to call it a super red-headed pikachu harikrishna severum then thats fine. I don't think it would become widely used and accepted though...
  13. Good effort!! My grandparents were only a few years off 70 years together when grandpa died last year.
  14. Owned by someone one here, or just over-all?? I've heard of bichirs getting close to 30, and there are some pretty old koi out there...
  15. We can import from anywhere we like, finding a supplier with a quarantine facility who's willing to do it is the problem!!

    Severums

My red-head (Heros sp. 'Rotkeil') Its not a good pic, looks like the red was added on with MSPaint!
  17. Interesting, I have the same red substrate in my tank and my heckelii's (and the loan surinamensis) are all really colourful.
  18. Repto - paste the URL/address thingy for the pic into the reply, make sure it starts with http and ends in .jpg then highlight it and click the button above the text box and below the subject that says Img. 8)
  19. So does the forum! I think what SBD was getting at is that for the basics like temperature, size etc you can easily answer your own questions with a quick search. I found this in about 6 seconds. This also looks interesting, but I've just skim-read it. Forums are great for discussing things like tank set up, tankmates, and other things that are based more on opinion than hard fact (like temp or water parameters).
  20. Hmm flounder or these... Somehow the patterns on the flounder just don't quite measure up, not to mention their crooked freaky looking faces!
  21. Oscars grow fast, like 1" per month for the first 6-8 months, could reach 10"+ in about a year in good conditions. With those dimensions you could probably keep all those fish together, start them off at a small size so they grow up together and it could work, unless of course the sevrums pair up. You can always thin them out a bit later, or get a bigger tank.
  22. I'd suggest you start with about 6-8 of them and let them pair up as they grow, that way you're certain to get two that will get along.
