Hiya sneaky2 I saw the thread and read your post (have actually printed it off as a guide) but because the person I'm buying the newts off said his hardly ever go in water I thought I'd start a new thread and that way everyone can get a better idea of starting from scratch setting up tank (mine will be indoors), feeding and caring rather than the sporadic postings by others as they arise. Perhaps you can help with this as you seem to have a longer history of keeping them than most here on FNZAS . I am thinking it's probably best for me to make their new home with about a third of land and rest water but to do this do I build up the base with rocks (as I read elsewhere it's not a good idea to put gravel in tank unless it's bigger than their mouths) until they poke out of water and then cover rocks in moist spagnum and plants. What sort of filtration should I use as they don't like strong currents? And to keep a constnt temperature in the tank would it be advisable to put a heater with cover in tank? These are the types of things I was hoping you and others who've had experience could put on here as I did a search of the site and there's hardly any postings on Fire Belly Newts. I have also saved several websites to my computer and will copy and paste these to this thread also but nothing like hearing it straight from those with experience here in NZ

Woohooo!!! Just purchased 2 Fire Belly Newts and had read so much info prior to buying them but would really like some first hand info from people in NZ who've actally got them on setting up their new home, care and feeding as there's so much conflicting info on the net . They don't arrive for another week but am told by the current owner that they hardly ever go in the water . PM or Email me Direct please

I copy and pasted below an email I received in the hope some of you might sign the petition and forward on to family and friends Hi Everyone In one week, the International Whaling Commission will hold its final vote on a proposal to legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in a generation. The outcome rests on whose voices are heard most clearly in the final hours: the pro-whaling lobby -- or the world's people? More than 650,000 of us have signed the petition to protect whales -- but it's time to reach 1 million! At the whale summit in Morocco, an Avaaz team is setting up billboards, front-page newspaper ads, and a giant, constantly-updating petition counter -- all to ensure that delegates, from the moment they step off the plane until they cast their votes, will see from our explosive numbers that the world will not accept legal whale slaughter. Let's soar past a million. Click to sign, and then forward this email to everyone you know: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/whales_last ... 274cd63f37 Thanks to the worldwide outcry, many governments have already pledged to oppose the proposal. Each time the Avaaz whale petition added 100,000 signatures, it was sent again to the IWC and key governments -- and some, like New Zealand, thanked all of us who had signed on. But pressure from the other side has been relentless -- and now other governments, especially in Europe and Latin America, may abstain... or even support the proposal. The vote could go either way. Citizen pressure is our best hope. After all, it was an explosive worldwide social movement in the 1980s that led to the commercial whaling ban we're now trying to protect. As the International Whaling Commission meets in Morocco -- on June 17, and vote less than a week later -- let's make sure the world's voices are there to greet them: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/whales_last ... 274cd63f37 After the global ban was first implemented on commercial whaling, the number of whales killed each year plummeted from 38,000 per year to just a couple of thousand. It's a testament to the power of humanity to move forward. As we move to confront the other crises of the modern age, let's cherish this legacy of progress -- by joining together now to protect our majestic and intelligent neighbors on this fragile planet. With hope, Ben, Ben M, Maria Paz, Benjamin, David, Graziela, Iain, Luis, Ricken, and the whole Avaaz team P.S.: Despite the ban, Japan, Norway, and Iceland have continued whaling -- and are now pushing to make the IWC proposal as lenient as possible. Expecting permission to catch more whales than ever, Japan is reportedly planning to buy its largest whaling ship yet. Click here to sign the petition against commercial whaling: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/whales_last ... 274cd63f37 SOURCES: "IWC whaling proposal 'offensive'", New Zealand Herald: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... d=10640398 "Conservationists condemn 'peace plan' allowing for limited whaling", Guardian: http://www.avaaz.org/guardian_whales The other side: IWC Chairman defends whaling proposal http://www.avaaz.org/commercial_whaling_support

Am hoping someone has used plastic breeding mats (the square grassy ones that are also used for baby fish to hide in) for breeding barbs or any type of egg laying fish and can tell me if you lay them directly on the bottom of tank or hang them somehow so there's a gap between mat and bottom of fish tank. I was originally told by the person who I bought my Longfinned Rosey Barbs off that he just had a dense mat of java moss and his bred this way but I've done this over several months and have witnessed the eggs being eaten as fast as the females are laying them and no babies yet . Have looked unsuccessfully for a metal mesh type tray or basket I could alter to fit the tank so have resorted to buying 2 x plastic breeding mats which fit perfectly in tank so that adults cannot get underneath to eggs when laid Any advice really appreciated
