  1. And after that, do nothing for a couple or three weeks. Then start up your water changes again. Make sure the Kirbs have a cave. Best of luck.
  2. Thanks 4:15 am? Or a more reasonable time :rotf:
  3. Location, location, location..... Where is it being held Ryan?
  4. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/fisornic.all.htm L numbers are not a scientific reference, so finding them is luck. They can't get onto the list until they are scientifically described at which time the L number is often 'overlooked' Look for: Ancistrus Baryancistrus Chaetostoma Glyptoperichthys Hemiancistrus Hopliancistrus Hypancistrus Hypostomus Lasiancistrus Etc Etc In the attached link
  5. Sometimes the eyes look red if the torch light hits the eye at the right angle, but not noticed a real red eye.
  6. Hi, So you know that they re-prime themselves every 24 hours (turn off and back on 30 seconds later) Mine sometimes wouldn't re-prime, and then I would have to take the motor off and make sure the impeller was not blocked, then put it back together and off it went. This was rather annoying and on closer inspection I found that the impeller was actually broken. I'll try and explain the broken bit. At the top of the impeller is the flat white disk that is the "blade" bit, and on top of this is a raised bit, which is kind of like a lip, (you could put an old 50c piece into it! Flat against the impeller blade) and I think the function of this part is to seat the impeller in the body of the filter. On a cursory inspection it appeared that this part was fine, however if I gave it a bit of a wiggle I noticed that this part was 75% detached from the impeller blade. Once I replaced the impeller then I never had the issue again. Theoretically you could take the motor off and just place the rest of the fx5 unit in your tank with air stones running in it to try and keep the bacteria alive, and just take the motor back to HFF if the impeller is fine.
  7. He he he, it's actually the male who wll suffer the most as he will be too busy guarding the fry to eat. They will continue to breed until they decide to stop. They do not seem to pair bond.
  8. That is how I understand it to be, correct.
  9. About 0.5% of GBA x GBA fry will have a "birthmark". It may fade in 2 or 3 years, but personally I think these marks are pretty cool. Also breeding from "birthmarked" GBA does not increase the frequency of "birthmarks" in the offspring. (just read the other posts and this may be redundant, but since I've gone to all the trouble of typing it........) Cheers
  10. I just couldn't help myself........ - sorry about the poor quality...... Having a bit of a snack (note the mood music :rotf: ) and just mooching around the tank Enjoy
  11. They are so cute at that size.
  12. Nice group of L142 I agree with P44 in regard to more of a dominance issue rather than a fight. I've seen behaviour similar to this (different type of plec) with males trying to get females to submit  With the big L142 males they tend to just bully one another and spike everything with the big spikes that they grow on their cheeks. They can vacuume themselves to the rocks etc, and the winner of the "fight" seems to be the one that can make the other one "move away" Hence trying to "mouth" the cheek area will prove to be an unwise move if things were getting serious. At about 15-18cm you get a pretty good guess at the sex of these. These ones are "toddlers" I would imagine, and we all know how they behaive. Cheers Geoff
  13. They don't eat wood as they don't have the teeth for it. The do like to hide in wood / roots and are good for a planted tank as they don't eat the vegetation.
  14. This looks like a good plan. You should have an "in case of bad things happening" instruction. I would recommend the following: 1: If you find a dead fish, please remove it from the water. 2: If you find a dead fish, don't feed this week (In case the dead fish has added an increased workload for the bacteria, you don't want to compound the issue with uneatin food) 3: If you find a dead fish, don't ring me, all I can do from "overseas" is worry. (And I will be too worried to buy you a christmas present :sml2: ) Cheers
  15. Just get some hot water cylinder wrap. The stuff that has the silver paper on one side and the white cotton wool type stuff on the other side. Works better than poly and pink batts. Easy to work with and you can just tape it to the edges of the tanks so you don't see it from the front.
  16. Not specifically. Josh's fish are from the first generation that demonstrated that "feature", but I am more inclined to think it had to do with egg development and water conditions, rather than genetics due to not seing that again in subsequent spawnings.
  17. I was aware that you got them off David R, yes.
  18. Good one Josh, See just add water. I am pleased that they bred for you, 'cause now we all know they can breed at 18 months old. Cheers
