It's a 440L planted community tank. Typical, females cause trouble?

Hey fishy folk I have two male Bolivian Butterflies. There's a bit of wood that acts as the DMZ and defines the boundaries for them and they pretty much leave each other alone. There's the occasional spat, but it's just posturing. One appears to be slightly dominant. Can I add a female without starting a punch-up? -Simon

That sucks It's a shame that breeders let them get into that state. Thanks for the info, I'll let the LFS know what's going on too - maybe they can chastise the supplier

They are the ones with an almost entirely black body, I think that's the brillant black varity? I got 11 of them about 3 months ago. One has disappeared, I never found the body so it was eaten or decomposed under some wood I presume. One has spinal curvature and a somewhat bleached colouring, it's quite small too. The two with bouyancy problems are otherwise healthy looking. They do it regardless of current direction, and as soon as they stop moving they sink - must be tiring, I get tired watching. Actually, in all seriousness, it detracts from the usual peacfull feeling I get watching the tank, just knowing the poor little guys are constantly struggling :-( Is this species known for low genitic diversity, "Mah mother's mah sister" type issues?

Hiya A couple of my black neon tetras don't seem to be able to maintain buoyancy - they sink whenever they stop swimming and are always swimming in a nose up position. Is there anything I can do for them, is this a common ailment? They don't seem to be too bothered - they eat as well as the others and aren't the runts of the school. -Simon

I have an HP Pavillion DV9514TX and it's been good so far, except no XP drivers so I'm stuck with Vista, but I try to use Ubuntu as much as possible anyhow. My only quibble is the screen has a somewhat narrow vertical viewing angle. I had a couple of Toshibas before that, they were great. I'd probably go Tosh again if I had to buy one now. Stay away from Dell, I work in IT and our helpdesk guys are constantly having to re-image them or get warranty repairs done. My last job used HP and they seemed reliable. Sony Vaios are overpriced, IMHO.

That's always the way. You test something to bits in private and it's fine. Show it to someone else and the damned thing stops working I've got a Flycamone2 on my Easystar, it's amazing how high they actually get when you see video. I hate both types of music, country and western. Apologies to the Blues Brothers I don't get opera. Who's that hip hop guy who sings in falsetto, Akon? He's in my top five. Actually, any of that weird chipmunk punk/hip hop with the pitch modified lyrics sucks out loud. Achy Breaky Heart by Mr B R Cyrus. Didn't his daughter turn out fine though :wink Who Let the Dogs Out, can't remember the artist. And last and definitely least, the Venga Boys. People at work hum it when they want to wind me up. I counter by humming the Muppet Theme Song - that sucker will stay in your head for days

A little off topic, but I was around at a friend of a friends a while ago. They named their kitten Poisson because they thought it was french for cat! I couldn't help cracking up (a few bottles of wine had been consumed) but they were gutted when I told them I dunno, I think it's a cute name for a cat. "Here fish fish fish!"

Does Furan 2 harm the bio filter?

I have a small bristle-nose, it it doesn't appear to be damaging the swords. Will it start to damage them as it gets bigger? Is there another type of pleco that'd be safe in a planted tank? Sorry for the thread hijack!

Nice photos! Can you deepen the depth of field a bit? I noticed on the first one that only the head is in focus, maybe a bit less aperture?
