  1. LOL That's exactly what I did when I visited my sister in Wanganui  I had the whole family carrying, dragging bits of wood down the beach- great fun
  2. Congrats! With any luck there might be more than one!
  3. Oh that is neat! she really looks as if she is enjoying it and actually dancing not just doing tricks.
  4. Oh Barrie I am so sorry to hear that. Sometimes life just keeps on dumping on you. A house fire is one of my worst fears. Losing everything would be terrible. It happened to a friend of mine. She had two toddlers. Luckily they were all out when it happened though she did drive off the road after seeing from a distance what was happening. Her hubby worked from home so they lost all that too . They were left with nothing but the clothes they stood up in. It was awful esp when they found their contents insurance was way too low. They were grateful that they were all unhurt but it was very hard when they had absolutely nothing. No clothes, nappies, personal papers etc. You suddenly realise how much stuff you really have and use in one day. They went to WINZ and they wouldn't help coz they didn't have any ID!!! They had a bit of a run around there. It took them awhile but they did build a lovely new house. Has your daughter got somewhere to stay ? Is there anything they need that we can help with? Chin up
  5. I noticed that with my diamond tetras and excel. The lowest amount would make them zip around crazily for a minute after I put it in ( not near them).
  6. Thanks Sam. I will try for a better pic tomorrow. These are DD2s pics
  7. Hi, DD2 ( just turned 8 ) is taking over all my tanks! She already has 4:lol: She has been interested in getting a fighter for a while. I thought I had put her off- I am trying to reclaim my tanks for Killies . But today we went to our LFS and she spied this fighter and bought him with her birthday money. What type/colour would you call him? We are hoping after QT he can go into a 3ft (130L)planted with some female guppies ,platys and GBA. Will that be ok or will I have to relinquish yet another tank?
  8. looks great! What are the dimensions of your tank?
  9. You can get some really good deals on trademe. People selling up everything. If you are willing to wait you will find one. I'd go the biggest you can fit into the space coz no matter how big the tank you get - it's never big enough  If you want to get a custom tank made try tanks2u on trademe ( u are in Ak?) good tanks for great prices.
  10. I would fix it. It's not expensive to do and is easy. I had a 110cm x 38 x38 cm in 6mm glass . The centre brace broke and it bowed. So unless this tank has thicker glass I would assume this one probably would as its higher.
  11. Last night I noticed a couple of neons in my community tank had white bumps near their mouths and one had a blotchy body. Tried to catch them but no luck ( 4ft planted). This morning I found a dead diamond tetra. This afternoon one of the whiptails was pale and listless. Yesterday they seemed fine. I managed to catch the affected neons and euth them. Water tested ok . I did a 40% water change. I am just guessing that it could be columnaris - reading up on it water changes, lowering the temp and salt were recommended. How much salt do I use?
  12. I got a lot of that algae in one of my tanks after a major shift around and removal of some plants - it was very overgrown. The nitrates in the tanks went up abit. Maybe from the disturbance of the gravel. After a couple of weeks of more frequent water changes and some manual removal it disappeared.
  13. OOOhhh yes please!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I realised yesterday that just behind the wall in the lounge where I have put a stand of small tanks there is a bathroom.. makes sense to put a tap right next to the tanks doesn't it.LOL
  14. Nothing this morning It's been 36 hours now. What do I do with the peat now Barrie? That's coz I'm being cautious coz I know I'm standing at the top of a very slippery slope
  15. Cool Well done! DD2 couldn't wait so we had a peek this morning but nothing yet. Ok it wasn't just her wanting to see  Will try not to look again till tonight. Theres still hope
  16. Hi Stella, Glad to know I'm not the only one  That's what I was worried about- knocking some off whilst chasing him around the tank. How long could it take to show up in the main tank if any fell off? I probably should have treated the main tank straight away to kill any before they latched onto fish.
  17. temp etc were the same. I don't know about the fish but I was certainly stressed by the move from the main tank back to the QT  man he's fast
  18. I got a dwarf chain loach- kept it in QT for 3 weeks. Thought "you look ok" so popped him in the big planted community tank. 10mins later DD2 sez" Mum that loach has got white spots on it!" Aaarrrgghh! 1 hr later I managed to catch it. That was 13 days ago. I put it back in QT and treated with wunder tonic ( as per instructions on bottle) and salt. It has no spots that I can see now. But will get younger sharper eyes to check this time! How long should I leave it in QT? I have been watching carefully in the main tank incase any other fish show signs but so far so good. Are they likely to get it?
  19. On Sunday the kids and I went over to Barries to see the Killies Barrie -Thank you so much for all the time you spent with us. It was much appreciated. Thanks too to your lovely wife and daughter for spending so long with the girls. They didn’t want to go home!! One now wants a turtle and the other wants pigeons!! It was so cool watching all those birds circling. . As for the killis -Wow pictures don’t do these fish justice. I am amazed that more people don’t keep them. Barrie was so helpful – answered all my questions for hours and sorted me out with stuff to start out. Now that I’m home I have sorted out a tank and am going to try hatching these eggs. It’s really exciting!! Fingers crossed something hatches! :bounce: :bounce:
  20. Thanks for your help guys. Lyndyloo - wow you have really tried. I was wondering whether those vet meds may help. Doesnt sound hopeful. Reading up on it - one snipet was that small changes can upset them ie re- arranging furniture. A few weeks ago I moved all the tanks from DD2 room to the lounge. I moved the dogs couch and chair to the other end of the lounge to make room for the tanks. The cat that is being beaten up used to sleep with the dogs and the aggressive cat slept at end of the lounge where I have moved the couch to. So maybe I've upset their territories. I'm off to AK for a few days so might have to try rearranging again when I get back then I'll try a trip to the vet.
  21. Hi, we have 5 cats . The two males are nearly three, fixed and have been together since they were kittens. They have always got on well. In the last few weeks one has started attacking the other and spraying around the house. Any ideas on why and how to stop this. Thanks.
  22. I made a DIY one which worked really well. The only problem with these is if you like to fluff about in the tank a bit they can be a pain to move to get access.
  23. Nine years ago we told everyone ( except a few who had to travel a long way) we were having a house warming with a hangi -then we got married in the garden.. well ok.. paddock beside our house . Loads of family and friends turned up. The marriage celebrant was a friend who did it for nothing - and gave us a sheep for the hangi too. We borrowed a small marquee. Booze was BYO. My bridesmaid was our female Bullmastiff held my my sister. Best man was our male Bullmastiff held by Hubbys brother. Rings were on ribbons round the dogs necks. Only expenses were my outfit ( hubby wore jeans and white shirt), ribbons for 4 dogs and food for hangi. Even our rings were ones we already had ( handed down). Friends and family did the hangi- then we partied - some all night around the bonfire. We had a great day and many people told me it was the best wedding they had been to. We figured the marriage was more important than the wedding! We had a photographer friend who was going to do the pics but he couldn't make it so we just have pics and video everyone took on the day. I am more than happy with that coz there are some good pics and honestly how often do you look at all your wedding pics? You do live your marriage every day though! Good luck!
  24. Thanks Jennifer, The fish has been behaving normally and all other fish in the tank are unaffected. This cory and another were the most recent additions to their tank ( a couple of weeks ago) after several weeks of QT. It doesn't seem to be affecting its gills. I have here in my fishy medic kit - salt, -wunder tonic (which contains 1.5% methylene, blue, 0.1% malachite green ,0.05 % acriflavine, and 0.04% quinine), -methylene blue 1% -pimafix -melafix -furan 2 -pp Would you use any of these or should I stick with the salt and get some malachite green tomorrow? Are cory's more sensitive to meds than other fish? Thanks
