  1. .... your lounge floor is covered with 20 odd large pieces of driftwood (it’s been a week now) while you decide which pieces are going into which tank. There’s several bits soaking in the bath too!
  2. That looks cool! Good job! We have no lights on our frogs. They do get a couple of hours of sunlight though. I did have them in a room that gets pretty hot in the afternoon. I moved them to a room that just gets the morning sun. The frogs seem unchanged but most of the plants died as the soil dried out - previously condensation had kept everything moist. ( 5ft tank half water half land- mesh lids) I have found that the more greenery in the tank the greener the frogs are. When the plants died and the moss went brown so did the frogs. Put in heaps more green plants and they went green again.
  3. We have been using Frontline too this season and despite regular treatments all the animals ( 2 dogs and 5 cats) have fleas. Usually we use advantage ( which works) but when I brought the bulk packets that was what they had. I forgot that several years ago the same thing happened. It seems that Frontline is not effective for us either . Drat more money down the drain.
  4. Last week I noticed a couple of neons had a small white lump on their lip. Otherwise seemed fine- great colour. Had some pimafix so tried that in their 100l tank. Couldn't catch them to put into a QT tank  It's been a few days and no change yet - not worse or better either. However on the 2nd or 3rd day of treatment I noticed all the snails were at the top of the tank. Yay I was able to pick them all out. My bristlenose was shooting up out of the water so I put her into another tank and added an airstone in the neon tank incase it was lack of O2. The other fish ( guppies) seem unaffected. So there's a new way to get rid of unwanted snails but watch your bristlenoses!
  5. I too find it really hard when the fish die . I really want to know why so that I can avoid it happening again. I am finding that I just have to toughen up and accept that if I want to keep fish then there will be deaths that I can't explain or illness I cant help. It's a hard thing for us animal lovers. As Caryl said I don't think there is sufficent knowledge out there in regard to fish health. If our other animals had the same mortality rate as fish often do we would not accept it as normal. I guess it's thru forums like this more experienced fish keepers can share their knowledge and we can explore new thoughts on fish care.
  6. I hate buying new cars! We never have much to spend and I worry about buying a lemon. We got a Izusu filly ( rebadged Nissian Elgrand) a year ago and we love it. So roomy. What with cars seats and dogs there was never enough room in a SW. I thought toyotas were suposed to go forever Good luck with the new one!!!
  7. What is the name of that beach? I am going down to Wanganui in a couple of weeks so want to check it out!! Thanks
  8. I just got a couple of very similar ones! As they swim their tails look cool. almost shimmering gold. I used to think guppies where just ok but I have really grown to love them. They are always moving and they are very colourful - even our girls are either yellow or have pretty tails.
  9. Hi, I have an old 404 and I found a similar thing after cleaning . If I filled it up with the hoses off water ran down into the moulded bit around the closing latches. Then that water leaked out. Once that bit emptied out there was no more leaking. Hopefully the same thing is happening with yours.
  10. yeah I think I will make a proper stand. Not worth it if something goes wrong. I think I will go for overkill and peace of mind. Thanks guys
  11. HI, I just got my new tank. I was hoping to use an old desk we had here as a stand. It's pretty heavy but will it be strong enough? Here's some pics The sides and back have been covered by a two layers of 5ml chipboard stuff Heres a pic of underneath I'm not sure if it is good enough? Hubby reckons its strong as but I don't want to take any risks. What do you guys think? thanks
  12. Ours was called Yush. The Indian family who named him said if something was really good you called it Yush. Friends had an awesome one called Zen, the one they have now is Zena.
  13. Yeah perhaps a little too motivated with food. She tends to go a little mental - pushing shoving nipping and jumping when food is around. She's calming down abit and realising that i won't give the food when she acts like that. This afternoon she has been following me around constantly and is twigging what No means- she's into everything!! They are really intelligent - they must go mad on " those" pig farms.
  14. Hi, A couple of weeks ago my wonderfully romantic hubby got me a piglet for our aniversary!! I had mentioned that I missed our boar "Ginger" who recently went to live up the road with some sows. So it wasn't just a random thing. She has been living outside around the house- we did have a couple of ponies in there and she bonded to one of them . Sleeping snuggled up to him when he lay down etc. so sweet. Now we have moved the ponies and she is interested in us . She comes inside and is getting used to being handled. She is just like a puppy. We would like her to get used to us and learn some things then she can live in a couple of acre paddock next to the house where she can root to her hearts content. The plan is to eventually have piglets for the freezer. We would like to teach her some manners so that she respects our space when she is huge! Ginger would sit before we fed him which was good. We have had differing advice on whether to get her a companion. We would like her to be happy and easy to manage so any advice would be appreciated.
  15. Oh wow!!! How cool!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Congratulations and keep us updated! Of course you need a bigger tank now!! Coz now you have 12 more!!!!
  16. Much excitement in our house this morning when DD2 noticed a couple of little 1 cm GBA in my 150l tank. :bounce: :bounce: We have only had guppy babies before. We have counted 5 so far. Being this big does this mean they are quite old already? Dad is still hiding in a little burrow under the driftwood. Is it likely he still has some babies with him? The tank is pretty heavily planted and there are alot of hidy holes.,I ripped out heaps of plants 2 weeks ago coz I couldn't find the fish!! There are male guppies, corydora and diamond tetra in the tank too. Could they eat the eggs/babies? I feed courgette/cucumber every 2/3 days and feed nova tabs and spiralina tabs too. Should I do anything else or just leave them to it. DD 1 checked her 250l tank and the male bristlenose we put in 2 weeks ago has eggs! Hard to see but looks like something is moving so may have started hatching. This tank has plenty of plants but also has a 6cm fantail and some female guppies in it. Will they eat the babies? should I try moving them? Luckily I recently got two extra tanks If so when/ and I do I move Dad too? He's laid in a crack in a huge bit of wood so may be hard to fit it in another tank. Could be easier to move the fantail and guppies. Easier still to leave it and see what happens I guess. Thanks for your help
  17. I looked up one night in our lounge and plain as day there was a lady standing there in a oldfashioned long white dress and bonnet type hat- then she just vanished. It suprised me but there was no bad feeling or anything. Lots of other people have seen her walking around here too. When DD2 was a couple of years old she was outside waving and saying Hello to someone - when we asked who she said that white lady standing there. After Hubbys' beloved Bull Mastiff died. Hubby went away for a few days and there was a low black shaping sliding around the doorways etc. It freaked me out abit. It stopped when Hubby came home. Then we went away and Father in law came down to feed animals he totally freaked out coz he said there was a person with no legs sitting on the end of the couch. We guessed that maybe it was the dog coz that's where he like to sit (sitting up like a person). We didn't see anything like that again. We live right next door to a pa and heaps of people say they see ghosts around here. Some people won't come back and stay here coz of what they have seen. Kids seem to see alot. One friends daughter got up in the morning and asked her Mum who all the people walking around inside were. DD1 saw a big black boat with a big bit sticking up at the front in the harbour. We went down to the beach to have a look and there was nothing there. An Auntie told us that it is seen from time to time and what it's name and meaning were. About a yr ago we had a guy here who reckoned there were heaps of spriit people around our house and he "cleared" it for us. He saw our 1/2 wild cat who is now 14 and wouldn't come inside ( loves cuddles but would run away). He didn't know that but looked at her sitting outside and said "she will start coming inside now". And the next day she did.!She spends most of her time inside now and trips me up smooching . So I reckon there is something that we can't explain with science coz loads of people have seen something and I don't think it's just their imagination.
  18. ha ha Ira .. I did think perhaps I should be a little worried coz some of them were surprisingly big - if one landed on you ... I thought the girls might be a bit scared coz it was quite deep for them but nah . DD1 did jump when she was face down looking below and one surfaced right next to her.
  19. She wasn't gasping just sitting on the bottom, no rapid gill movements. We fed her goldpearls ( jbl sinking pellets) and the odd pea. She didn't eat on the last day. I wondered if it was something to do with egg laying but I don't know what is normal behaviour in that department. I guess I will just put it down to" one of those things". DD 1 is giving up on goldfish now as she has lost 3 in the last year. DD2 is happy coz she gets to have one now. Here's hoping the new one lasts longer.
  20. Hi , DD got a new fantail goldfish before Xmas. We put it in a QT tank with a air filter filled with media from an existing tank. The day after we got her she laid eggs. Then she sat around on the bottom for a few days. I was a little worried but all tests were ok. She started swimming around again and a week later laid more eggs . She lay around on the bottom again and two days later was dead. I tested the water all 0 except nitrite which was .5ppm I had done a 20% water change every 2-3 days the last one on the day she last laid eggs. I tested then and all was ok. I had been using a different test kit and suspect it didn't read correctly. Would .5ppm nitrite kill? DD 2 has just got another fantail and we don't want to make another mistake. Thanks
  21. Nah I left it behind but my mates took their camera so should get some pics. I hope...
  22. I just had to share with somebody!! The day before yesterday a pod of around 40 dolphins spent the whole day in our bay. Friends of ours who are camping down in our paddock by the beach noticed them in the morning and went kayaking and swimming with them. Later in the afternoon most of them were still there so we went out in a boat. About 25 dolphins came over to check us out and were jumping around the boat. My daughters (7 & 8 ) and I jumped overboard (with snorkel gear) and it was amazing!! :bounce: :bounce: They all came over and swam close around us. I stretched out my arm and they came within a couple of inches of my hand. We moved away from the boat and they followed us. They were swimming under us and jumping around us. They would swim up close then turn over and look at us. Then swim away then back and surface right next to us. It was a fantastic experience. One good thing about the dry weather was the water was the clearest I have ever seen it here so we were able to see them really clearly. Dolphins come in here quite often but don’t usually hang around all day. They had been around the day before. One of them had been carrying a dead baby around on its back. These guys seemed to be having a ball and seemed keen to check people out. As we left in the boat they all started doing these huge leaps and flips. It was magic!!! We were on a huge buzz for ages! Something we will remember forever. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  23. Very nice!!! I would love a pond like this at my place. Did you climb on your roof to get the pic?
