  1. I'd just rubber band the leather to the rock or try a toothpick through its base and rubber hand holding that down. They seem to attach faster with the cut side held to a rock, or is that just my imagination?
  2. Got enough spare bits to make me a 500X500 reefrack for my sump? hehe, just kidding. Looks good. I think I might slowly be coming around to the reefrack idea, but I don't think there's enough room in my main tank to actually make it work right, Well not without significantly changing the layout.
  3. Some of those plants look familiar.
  4. Because, the bacteria killed if you use lukewarm water to clean the filter is well within the doesn't matter range and will have regrown in maybe a day.
  5. Not the greatest pic, but here you go...

    Testing new Web Host

I thought it best to shut up and not make things worse.
  7. I've tried to talk myself into getting a dremel and dremelling a hole in my sump for the float valve. But...I don't have the nerve since if I DO break the sump I have to tear the whole tank down to replace it. So...Heatgun, some acrylic and heaps of silicone to waterproof it...
  8. It's lighting, water conditions, food, karma, dogma, and the alignment of the stars that decide coral coloring...
  9. Dremel and a ceramic tile bit. There's heaps on Reefcentral about it.
  10. The only thing that will kill the bacteria is if you use extremely hot or cold water or the tap water is heavily chlorinated. Most city water around the country is only lightly chlorinated. It won't make much of a dent. Now, go to someplace like Los Angeles where the water is chlorinated enough that even having your filter near a running tap will kill the whole filter...

    plecostomi

Anyone have the scientific name of gold spots or a good picture? I haven't seen one in years and never seen one more than maybe 2 inches.
  12. You don't have to. Even if everything is perfect I still like to do a small weekly water change. No harm being a bit lazy if it's all good though.
  13. That's what I'm planning on doing, whenever I get around to it to have the liverock lifted above the DSB. Was thinking I'd use some of the stack of UGF plates I have in a closet.
  14. Sounds exactly like sponges. Little free filters.
  15. Hehehe, Start force feeding it algae and aptasia until it starts to like them?

    Advice survey

Nope, I've never been advised that something might not do well in my system. Well, ok, once or twice I had been but I bought the fish anyway because they were wrong. In my FW tanks anyway. I usually do my research before I buy fish or only buy them if I'm pretty sure they'll do well despite lack of specific research. All I see LFS employees as is someone to catch the fish so I don't have to get wet, NOT a source of information or advice. That's MY responsibility. If I do ask them something I view their advice very skeptically.
  17. Because you were busy whipping around your specs?

    DIY Skimmer

I wonder how the price of getting a sheet of acrylic bent into like a hex tank would cost compared to a similar size acrylic pipe? May not be quite as pretty but should be just as effective. Might be kinda interesting. D*mn, I just gave away an acrylic tank to Bilbo for free, coulda made an awesome big skimmer with that!
  19. That's a great idea. Make the stores do that and all you'll be able to buy is fake plants and little bubbling treasure chests. I don't think it's the LFS's problem if it dies because you can't take care of it. That's YOUR responsibility. Should Ford make sure you can drive a V8 without crashing before selling you a Falcon? No, it's your responsibility. They can tell you it's hard, but if you choose to buy it why should they replace it when you kill it? But, yes, I agree, they shouldn't bring in anything that has a very low chance of survival. Of course, that's also why a lot of people complain about not being able to get a lot of SPS I think. Because most people don't have the equipment for them and they die.
  20. The two times I used it I didn't need to re-cycle the tank.
  21. Cyano, a dose of erythromycin will clear it right up.

    snails

The ones with shells that you don't want. Hehe. Go with pond snails, noone wants them and they grow pretilly easily.
  23. Sounds like one would likely do well in my tank then.
  24. If someone provides the coral I'll be happy to provide another data point...
