  1. Heat only rises if it's heating a fluid that then moves. If you're heating water/air, yeah, the warmer water is slightly less dense and essentially floats upwards. If you're heating glass, and wood, it's going to simply be conducted from the heating pad in all directions.
  2. He's already got it ordered, maybe if it hasn't been built yet he can get it drilled. I get the impression most places really don't like to drill holes on completed tanks. I don't see any reason to drill any holes though, just have the dividers shorter a tiny bit.
  3. If anything doing that would be the least expensive route, would even cost a tiny bit less for the tank because each partition would be slightly shorter than the rest, But too late now probably.
  4. A single heating pad may cost less to buy than 5 small heaters, but is going to cost more to run. So, depends how you're looking at cost effective.
  5. Well, if your car is being overrun by the tide, might as well take the lids off your water containers...
  6. Mine shrivels up and looks like it's dying every time the KH drops below about 6. I've moved it to a brighter spot, maybe it'll like that better.
  7. I believe a heating pad is going to be generally less efficient than 5 small heaters. You're going to lose a lot of heat keeping the stand warm instead of the tank water in addition to the glass and any substrate insulating the water. A submersed heater...Basically all of the power goes into the water making it more efficient.
  8. Leopardfish is a livebearer similar in shape and size to a guppy.
  9. I was thinking, "Waitaminute, this thread used to be firemouths!" They look nothing alike.
  10. Fanciest I have is a golden pleco. Dunno his L number. But, my favorite is my plain old redspot.

I don't think the temperature is the biggest problem, how'd it have enough air for 3 weeks?

Hydnophora! I'm writing it down this time!
  13. All I've found java moss to be good for is clogging filter intakes and collecting garbage.
  14. You don't shove it through the plants into the gravel. Just work it in among the plants or on top of them and wiggle it a bit. That'll get the stuff that's just sitting there up into the water and then suck it up the vacuum. If you're breaking leaves and parts of the plants you're doing it wrong. Plants aren't so delicate that brushing their leaves aside is going to do massive damage to it.

    DIY TANK

Yeah, imo unless you're going for something like a tall hex or something like one of my tanks which is 900 tall but is only something like 400X 400 base you really don't want to go much beyond 600. I don't think if I was getting a rectangular tank made I'd go over 600...Might even be inclined to go a bit less. Unless you're going for huge tanks that you can swim in to clean.
  16. Stick the vacuum in the plants, wiggle it around to get stuff off the bottom into the water and suck it up.
  17. You mean the parrotfish and the bumblebee gobies talk.

What size is the tank? Silver sharks prefer big tanks, same with red tailed black sharks. The RTB will probably get pretty aggressive too. The rest should go fine together, assuming a proper sized tank.

    DIY topoff

Topoff is installed and running. Got lucky, I have the topoff hanging on the right side of the tank pointing inwards and it only barely has enough room. When I was testing it with just a little water in the container it took about a minute for it to start pumping the water out and would keep pouring about 500ml after the air pump stopped. So I have the outlet hose a little bit higher so it will stop quicker. But that's a worst case, when there's more water in the container it will start and stop quicker. Seems to pump around 500ml per minute so I'd guesstimate it will only turn on for about a minute or two every 3-4 hours. And all there is to see is a 25L jerry can with two air hoses running out of the lid into the stand.
  20. I don't even want to think how much the arcadia pendants he'd need would cost new for 4X 400ws. Sooo...I'll go look instead of thinking cause I'm curious. Let's see, from www.aquaria.com.au... a tunze MH 400W is $1770 each X4= $7080 au=$7500 NZ Geisemann, about the same: $6672 au=$7092 nz Arcadias don't seem to have a 400W version sold on there so, for equivalent wattage,2 Arcadia Series 3, 3X250 = $5776au=$6140nz Not including shipping and whatever and any cheaper sources pies could possibly get them from. DIY would be like $800 for 4X400 and I'm sure you could get a really nice surround or something made for them for far less than another $5K.

    leaky tank

Just remember, don't worry if you see your fish swimming around with little pink bubbles coming out of their mouths....
  22. Nah, totally wrong shape for an uaru.
  23. Hmmm, hard to say since it's just a baby, may not even look like it would as an adult. But, I'd say synpsilum is a pretty good guess.
  24. Seems like a good skimmer, but I'm far from impressed for $3000.
