  1. Ok, Reef, how much is Tunze's version of aquaknead it? Since the stuff from the warehouse is $12.50 I'd estimate a similar amount of the tunze stuff is what? $50? Sure it works at least as well as aqua knead it....
  2. If you're only pouring water in slowly and overflowing the excess down a drain 20% weekly is only going to equate to something like a 10% water change or less if you drain it down and refill. You'll have to be pouring in a lot more than that to make it worth the time and trouble.

    Arrow crab

I don't think there's much chance of that....
  4. Is that barrel stainless? Don't like the idea of all that metal...
  5. But, you'll lose most of your airflow. Just put the airstone a few inches off the bottom of the tank, then you'll at least have a few inches of water left.
  6. Yeah, it seems like that's not coming out cheaper than having it all glass. Maybe a bit less safer crack and leakwise, but how much would just a standard glass one be?
  7. Nah, 1000 LPH is good, just aim the outlet against the glass or something to break up the current.

    rector + kalk

Unless they're using the calcium reactor as a kalk reactor. I mean not putting any of the usual calcium media into it and just using it to dose kalk. That makes some sense, but then it seems like using the most expensive way possible to do something that's cheap and easy.

  10. Yeah, I'd suggest just leaving it at 7. Sure, lower may be a tiny bit better, but they certainly won't be unhappy and they'll be better off with a little higher PH than having an owner that's sick of it taking too much work to keep it there.
  11. Yup, Mollies. When you have mystery fry in a tank with fish that are very prolific breeders and fish that are impossible to breed(pretty much anyway) it's usually best to bet on them NOT being the impossible to breed fish.

    Is it OKAY

What kind of salt is it? I'm guessing it's just like a big bag of table salt? Then no, it's not ok. Needs to get a bag of artificial sea salt.
  13. I got a new pair of 16Ks 250W. I've been thinking I'd prefer something a little lower kelvin, might try 14K next time. They're much dimmer looking than the 10Ks that I had, but the coloring is a lot bluer, seems to me a bit more faded coloring though.

    dying fish

Congratulations Dawn, I think you've discovered the worst sounding way of euthanizing a fish ever.

    AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

Who is arranging the security to make sure Steve and Reef don't hurt each other? Or the boxing ring?
  16. Since you only have one outlet you're better off putting it at the surface. It's normal for the plecos to occasionally swim up to the surface and grab a gulp of air and not particularly unusual for the guppies to hang around at the surface. But, anyway, move the outlet to the top so it's airating better and see what happens.

    Floating Plants

There's also indian fern and I've discovered, through a bit of slackness, that Wisteria actually ends up looking pretty nice floating.
  18. When one of my severums had it, yeah, it started out as a small white dot on both eyes and spread to cover the whole eye, as I was treating it, it shrunk to a small white dot inthe center of the eye. Then unfortunately I lost her because I was a bit careless.
  19. I've found furan II works well on cloudy eyes. Put him in a sick tank and treat him.
  20. Grow one clown fry up and sell it, should pay for something like 10,000 times its weight in cyclopeeze.

    how much to pump

It's no more redundant than it is in a marine tank. Serves all the same purposes. Hide all the equipment out of the tank, etc. You could even set up a refugium with some plants and stuff for the FW. It's not conceptually any different. I've wanted to do that with my cichlid tank, have a sump with a bunch of lights on it full of plants, maybe even try and grow daphnia in there too.
  22. Somehow I think it might be economically preferable to be able to grow the fry up, sell them for like $25 each and then BUY heaps of coral food.
  23. Yeah, that definitely looks like a tumor. I suspect chemotherapy may be a bit too expensive for a fish. It's possible the stress of the broken tank incident could have weakened the fish's immune system enough to allow some virus to take hold that caused the cancer or it could have been the fish's immune system was holding off a cancer it already had and then it took advantage of the stress to take over. Only treatment I can imagine might be practical is take it out of the tank and see if you can cut the tumor off with a very sharp(Sterilized) knife and then put it in a hospital tank with melafix and some salt. Or something along those lines. You'd want to make sure you get all of the tumor so you'll probably have to take off a bit of the fin too. Don't go and start chopping up your fish straight away though, maybe someone else will come up with a better idea.

    how much to pump

I don't know what you're intending to keep in it, but a 350lph filter would be FAR too small. I think you'd want a minimum of around 2000LPH. But, you're not asking about filters. You're wanting a return pump from your sump, right? If you're going for really dirty fish or for very heavy stocking you'll want something really serious. You could send Dogmatix a PM, see if he's still got that UP6 for I think it was $180ish. That will give you somewhere around 4000-5000 LPH if your overflow and everything can handle it. Otherwise there are a lot of smaller pond pumps that should work well. Something like a Powerjet 2000 would get you about a 2000LPH turnover which would be a nice comfortable amount.
