Yeah, I should just go and order some joes juice...I should have grabbed some when I was in christchurch but I thought spending $350 on corals was enough...
How big do they get? I noticed a few tentacles on the far side of a big rock in my tank so climbed had to squeeze around the side of the tank so I could see it, only through a tiny area at the far side of the tank...
OMG! IT'S HUGE! Like the size of a $.50 coin across the mouth! I don't know how I'm going to kill it, I can barely even see it.
Same here, 3-6 months for the snails, 3-6 months for starfish. Glass shrimp though seem tohandle the temp just fine as long as the survive the first week or two.
You could also try coarse bird grit from a pet store. It's crushed oyster shell, pretty cheap. Not as cheap as collecting a bunch of free shells, but how much is your time worth? Of course, collecting shells could be more fun...
I'd rather pay for a reef tank than a kid any day. What do they say the average kid costs over a lifetime? $700,000? That would build an AWESOME reef tank!
Mylar film, you mean? I was going to suggest that, but then remembered we're talking for near metal halides. I don't think the film would handle the heat well.
I don't understand the problems most people have with sucking on the hose to start the siphon. You suck and watch the water come up over the edge of the tank and down, once it's past the water level of the tank you're done.
It's not something like the divider between the far left chamber and the bubble chamber(Whatever you'd call that one) is missing, is it? Should be fairly obvious if it was, but if it's missing the bubbles will go straight out the outlet.
What's stopping someone from simply replacing all the sand in their sump ever couple years? Here in NZ it would be a bit expensive, but not excessively. Or even replacing half of their DSB every year or two.
Hatching them isn't a problem, it's harvesting them, I have a hell of a time seperating the eggs and the BBS. Usually I just give up settle for getting a lot of eggs too.
My tank evaporates about 5 liters a day with the covers off the tank. So my topoff is a 25 L jerry can and runs dry around 22ish. I burn through that in about 4 days. With them on I can squeeze about 6 days out. So call it 3ish with the lids on. That's over winter.
Oh, and as far as the chiller, If you've got the water coming from the tank down through the floor to the chiller you've got 10 feet of head. That'll give you all the flow you need.
