Yeah, the chlorine required will kill off the septic and you'll just have a tank. May be ok if you empty it every couple months though.

But marine is so much cooler, you get a MUCH higher coolness/cost ratio with local marine, so really you'd be better off switching to marine.

Tan sands are usually silica, most sands I've seen around NZ are just plain old grey rock(Whatever the name for it is), just finer. Neither of which does anything to the PH. Seems most tanks could stand to have a little more buffering given by the traces of shells that might be in it, if it's even measurable when in a reasonable size tank with moderate water changes.

Most beach sands around here only have the occasional shell in it. They're FAR from mostly made up of crushed shells. Now, if it's a white sand beach, that's not made up of crushed shells either, they're usually made up of parrotfish poop. Which is coral.

Used to be that horse rustling was grounds for hanging. Sounds to me like the country would be a better place if the girls were disposed of so they could be replaced with some non faulty ones.

There's also Geophagus Altifrons which is either a synonym for Surinamensis or a closely related species or...Who the hell knows. They look about the same and most of the geophagusii have similar requirements. Personally, Geophagus Surinamensisessisii are my favorite FW fish.
