  1. Aww would've been great to see you guys in the mighty Waikato. Will time it better for our fomal crawl at the beginning of Autumn next year.
  2. You never have in the past Dave. It would be a shock to be able to see your fish
  3. I'm still confirming the stops, should have a schedule roughly sorted after this weekend. As for WOW we usually try and swing by, unless we are really stretched with numbers that can be factored in, probably do the goldfish bowl as well.
  4. Great stuff :bounce: Shall we have an auction too? it would be great to see what fishies and plants people are breeding and get them circulating. As we are starting and finishing at my place I will make sure we have the facilities to cover storage and heating etc.
  5. Thanks for that post It is great to have contact with other crazy fish people from around the world :bounce:
  6. Give Edit :suphew from World of Water in Hamilton a ring Edit :suphew , he does speciality tanks for shops etc and installation etc as well Privacy: No personal information (real name, e-mail, phone number, address etc…) concerning another user, person or business without that person’s express written permission. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36158
  7. Youre right Morcs thats why they breed so prolificly, they are the guppys of Africa...*checks behind for assassin*
  8. Mine eats pretty much anything that will fit in his mouth and doesn't move too fast...so much for the great predator..scavenger more like. Hikari sinking carnivore, ox heart, small mussells, worms,...the other fish's food spirilina tabs..trout pellets the varied diet agrees with him tho, he's still growing strong at close to 40cm and only about a year and a half old. Biggest thing is making sure they get plenty, mine hardly grew much until I got rid of my oscar.
  9. He's only a young fella Sharkie, and she's a cougar! it may take a while, he may be shy.
  10. OK folks here's the deal: Sunday 01 November 2009 we will be having our 1/2 yearly tank crawl. This is our informal crawl (a good reason to be social really) and we'd like to invite anyone who is interested to come along and hang with us for the day. We will be looking at a wide range of tanks, planted, "unfurnished", nano's, Amazon & Malawi biotypes and marines some of which are from some new members who have kept their tanks behind closed doors until now. We will do the rounds then have a BBQ meal and a few brown frothy "lemonades" at my place to finish so make sure you carpool and have a driver. We'd especially like to see our sister clubs represented so we can build on the more social aspects of being a crazy fish person  It will be well organised with full details being published most likely on Monday. Book it in your diary we will see you then. Owen
  11. Anyone seen any in NZ recently? They are on the allowed import list Also Known as Bearded Cory
  12. How about a pet capybara! that would be kewl, you could keep it in a massive planted tank, or just flood your back yard. Perhaps we could even import them and farmers can use them for weed control in drains...I bet they would be tasty..Hmmmmmmmm roast Capybara
  13. Turn it on its side to get it thru the door?
  14. Creative Plastic fabrication ltd 35 higgins rd Hamilton 07 847 0044 Talk to Dave Hyett I did some shopping around a while back and he was the best value, great guy and will cut or drill it for you if you wish. Only guy I ever use
  15. Geeze Shannon after that first try at rams and now this one we will have to call you RAM-BRO  BTW I have 2 pair of those standard blues you gave me, they both ate the eggs but I dont have room for more fry atm anyway.
  16. This is a subject which comes up all the time either in conversation or here. The truth of the matter is a specialist fish shop carries a big risk when it comes to buying fish, there is no guarantee it will sell quickly or that it will survive, it also costs a pretty fair amount to run 100+ tanks full of fish. We are all pretty blown away by the price of some pieces of kit or fish at times, but remember that these actual specialist fish shops are providing a valuable service to the hobby and unless we use them we will lose them, I will purchase hardware or food from my local rather than off the internet and happily pay 10% more (which I get off because I am a FNZAS member) because its keeping my local shop going. Earlier this decade (2003) Tropical fish hobbist magazine conducted extensive research into the future of the hobby. which faced changes in the form of Mega stores and the internet, I was determine that there were three vital links in the chain which are VITAL in keeping the hobby alive 1: Aquarium societies (which collectively support and maintain this very website and forum but many people seem too tight to contribute to by spending a pittance of a yearly sub on) 2: Recruitment of Children (usually by aquarium societies) 3 The Local Fish Shop Before we groan and wring our hands at the extra few bucks we spend on that great fish the LFS has finally gotten in after waiting for it for months, imagine how hard it would be to rely on some faceless website to source and get that very specific fish in for you. I too feel the sting of parting with money but if you are loyal to your local shops and help them survive they will usually come to the party when you need something urgently or cant quite afford the asking price, don't underestimate the value of face to face interaction and community.
  17. Shovel nose catfish? (I know there is always one  )
  18. What is the point of belonging to a national organisation with more expertise in fish keeping and ichology than all the Govt dept's combined if we cant work together on a project to get some new fish in. Yes as an individual it is a nigh on impossible task without a huge bank roll, but we have in our ranks biologists, scientists, administrators and people who have too much time on there hands and spend all day posting on here  I think the Amano shrimp would be a good trial of the system. it will take work but this community can do it provided we are persistent. I think you would find that there are enough people in the Global fish keeping community who already have the organisms information on hand and who would be willing to share if it was done in a sensible manner. Our biggest challenge would be coming up with the local environmental data, which shouldn't be too difficult (the Waikato Aquarium Society's Patron is a big cheese at NIWA)
  19. My C Sterbai spawn but the eggs are all infertile. its only a small group 2 male 2 F so I'd expect a large amount of infertile eggs but some should take. Has anyone had any experience with this? is it something they get better at? I have read that reducing the ph aids the sperms penetration of the egg, I'm sitting at 7 atm but as they are SA fish I can comfortably drop the PH by a point or two My Caudimaculatus have about a 75% fertility rate and my Trilineatus about 50% in similar water conditions. Any comments?
  20. I heard back from Stefan, the female is holding at the moment, once they are old enough he will be selling for around the $10 mark for singles larger quantities by negotiation.
  21. I believe one of my members got Manie's breeding group, I think he's been successful too, pm me your details how many you want and what you are willing to pay (including delivery) and I'll have a chat with him
  22. Thats correct, this is what the FNZAS are here for, we are a lobby group (we have lost our way recently but are on the improve) I need to look into it more but I believe that it only costs about $50 to get a fish or invert considered but realisticly it holds more water when sent in from the FNZAS Fish Committee (its supposed to be what they do but no one approches them to do it or is willing to stump up the $$) It is something I want to get moving but as usual time is always short. Sam please forward me that email. I will be happy to help you out (especially if you are a member of a club ) owen(at)hennessydotcodotnz Cheers Owen
