  1. From my years of keeping these I found that Nepenthes generally don't like to be submersed in water...in saying that I have kept both N.alata and N.ventricosa submersed and they have done swimmingly. Mind you I do keep mind in a greenhouse or in my very hot and stuffy 1 bedroom unit. The Sarracenia pitchers ("Ground" pitchers) can do well being submersed, I have had several different species outside and most of them have flowered. Of the Drosera (Sundew) species I have kept, most do well sitting in water baths and I can say the same for Dionaea muscipula (Venus fly trap). Utricularia (Bladderworts) like to be very, very wet and there is an aquatic species but not sure if it's is in or allowed entry into NZ?? Keeping CP is like keeping fish, somethings work well for others but can epically fail for others. And plant shops and CP collectors will often have differing ways of doing things, but whatever works for you. And that's my 5 cents worth.
  2. The Savage Garden by Peter D'Amato is by far the best book for everything you need to know.....I have it and a few others but found his to be the best and great photos. He even briefly mentions NZ in it. Carnivorous Plants of New Zealand is also a good read. Have fun and welcome to the CP world.
  3. Yip, repotted my Neps months ago and my sundews and "ground" pitchers are just starting to wake....my D.binata and D.filiformis are catching bugs already
  4. Thanks Dr A, I have a few CP but have not decided which to repot....might still have time before they reach full growing time i.e. wake from winter hibernation. It's funny you say that about the rocks/stones in the bottom of a pot and thanks for clarifying that.....I had been confused by the interweb.....I guess as long as the roots are not sitting i.e have short roots in water the plants will be fine. Cheers.
  5. Excellent!!! I had read about the gravel and similar. Thanks
  6. Recently discovered 5 pots, 12 and 17cm deep, in my kitchen and thought to put them to use. Does anyone have any ideas/knowledge as to what plants do best in non draining pots? I have thought about (legal) herbs, carnivorous plants (specific species), cacti and some succulents. My Google search has lead me in circles. Any info would be much appreciate, thanks in advance.
  7. LOL let us know how that works out for you.
  8. Not to mention how much is stopped that the "general public" don't know about.
  9. Properly? The fish would have had (obviously) no quarantine of any sort not to mention they were illegally and intentionally smuggled into the country without a permit.
  10. I think the (massive) bulge in his pants pocket may have also been a give away, unless he was just extremely "happy" to be in NZ????
  11. Yip, what's interesting is that if a NZ species male breeds with the SA female no hybrids are created and the male apparently can't tell the difference between the NZ female and SA female. Seems like wasted energy on the males part :dunno:
  12. Yip, been Googling and found out some interesting stuff. I'm well informed today
  13. Doing some Googling now....great day to be off work and inside.
  14. So, moved a few weeks into a new place and found this mantis on my plants....no idea if she was here before I was or if she came along on the plants, now she is in my house looking for a place to lay her egg case. Nice colour either way and never seen one coloured like this.
  15. But isn't that what a forum is for??? To express ones opinions??? And to base ones "friendships/associations" on someone's personal opinion? Seriously? Sounds like playground antics to me. I might also point out that I have never nor ever would treat any animal as a child/person! I've worked in the veterinary/animal industry for over 10 years and in my experience there is certainly no place for that, certainly it's not professional and just doesn't "cut the mustard". I made an educated decision long ago not to have any children despite having several successful relationships....though I'm keen to know that you would determine as successful.
  16. Quite suitable considering the current (one sided debate) discussion
  17. Oh really? Would I? Why? Is that how you think? That's such an old way of thinking, in fact that's how my Grandparents parents used to think. Catch up with the Century Granddad!!! The difference between children and cats is that children, on the whole, depending on how good/poor their parenting is, (should) know right from wrong and cats clearly don't because they are not capable of such organized thoughts/decision making. Sure I would have a problem (as would many here and in the general population) with your bloodshed but then again so would the SPCA and other such organizations, as you would be WILLINGLY breaking the law by harming a perceived innocent animal. It's legal to humanly kill an animal found on your property? Really? Do share and also the method and environment (urban or rural)? Does this apply to all animals and humans also???
