  1. Great info! Thanks While on the subject of the eels, I know they like to dig into the substrate. Is it worth me buying some PVC pipe and create a tunnel or 2 under the substrate for them to hide in, or are they likely to ignore it and make their own?
  2. I'd quite like to keep 2 fire eels together, but i'm finding alot of conflicting info saying that they'll be fine, or that they wont get along. From experience with mixing marine Tangs and Angels (which alot of people say is a no-no) i've found out that it can be done, despite what some people say. Is it one of those things, that they may be 100% fine together, or they may just learn to hate each other?
  3. As for Tank Size, I think its about 3 and a half foot, and as for them getting too big, they could end up in my 5ft tank (520 litres) as of yet, my old marine is in the garage, waiting for a place to put it (new house one day), and a crack in the bottom to be fixed (doh! ) Whats the facination with Killifish? Are they quite aggressive etc? Colour? I've considered Ciclids also, which is another option
  4. Cool! And they're not likely to try and take a finger off in the process?
  5. So I have the option to setup a Freshwater tropical tank of about 200 litres until I'm able to look at marine again (could be a year or 2) Quite keen on the idea of having a couple of eels, and a couple of oddball, not so common fish. Maybe a couple of freshwater puffers? Black Knife Fish? Having been focusing on Marine for the past couple of years, I'm not really sure what freshwater species are available in NZ, or whats compatible with what. Say I was going to look at 1 or 2 eels, what species of eel are worth considering, and what can go with them that wont get destroyed? Working with a clean slate here, so can consider anything
  6. Has been slow here too, apart from the 20 ft container filled with 100kg server cabinets that I've just helped unload, under the watchful eye of a MAF officer as the stupid suppliers in Hong Kong filled out the Quarantine Declaration wrong (and then tried to blame us for it when we had them on about it)
  7. BAHAHAHAH YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?!?!
  8. "And so the fact that they purchased the machine meant somebody had to make the machine. And when somebody makes a machine, it means there's jobs at the machine-making place." --George W. Bush, Mesa, Arizona, May 27, 2008
  9. I'm voting for Bill and Ben That'll fix the problem
  10. Not bad then Looks like we have a winner
  11. Lol, fair enuf. So maybe a 1 - 2 second delay?
  12. Obviously it has a decent Macro on it Some nice pics. How many did you end up taking, and how many of those ended up being deleted? If you had a fairly good success rate, then i'll have a good look at getting one. What worries me, is if the focus is slow, then it may be difficult to get the hang of it underwater, as I'd assume its quite hard to do the half press focus on the shutter button, while its in its case surrounded by water.
  13. Hmm yeah they've got the IC600 on trademe for $250 odd with underwater housing. This is an option, but I'm a bit sceptic about the unknown brands. I've seen some which will kill batteries within 10 shots, even with top of the range batteries installed. How is it as a normal camera? Would you recommend them as a cheaper alternative?
  14. Hey Supasi, yep I've seen that fuji bundle with the J10 or J15 camera (cant remember which it was) but the casing is only rated to 3 metres (We also sell Fuji cameras) Sony have the option of installing a red filter into their housings which I would look at, but knowing them the filter probably costs half the price of the housing itself
  15. Yeah depth was an issue Most of the cameras or cheap housings came with max depths of 3 - 5 metres, possibly OK for snorkelling, but I was slightly deeper than 5m when I was snorkelling in Vanuatu from memory
  16. So heading away to do some diving/snorkelling early next year, and am looking at buying a digital camera to take underwater. Looks like i've got a couple of options Buy a decent camera with decent housing (I.e Sony Camera with Marine Pack) and spend quite a bit of $$, or hunt around for an old housing to fit the DSC-P200 (cant seem to find much on this tho) or Look for cheap housing on trademe (2nd hand or not) and then try and find a cheap camera to suit i.e http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-ph ... 338234.htm or Buy a no named brand, which will inevidably be cheaper, and thus, wont be the end of the world if its eaten/broken/swept out to sea http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-ph ... 890681.htm Alternatively, if anyone knows of something similar to the above which works well, i'd be keen to have a look Cheers
  17. Did you touch the white powder? Its probably just salt creep (crystalized salt due to evaporation). It does get everywhere, but since the RSM has a closed lid, it should be good as gold.
  18. From what i understand, the only thing that would cause corrosion, is if the equipment was in the firing line of evaporation (i.e above the tank) or if it was getting wet. For example, my tank is surrounded by TV, stereo, metallic ornaments etc and they are fine. However the picture hook which is located above the tank has begun to rust. So I reckon you'd be alright, but might be best to wait to see what others say first
  19. Next time i'm up your way, how bout I stop past, admire your tank, and then try to explain what I'm on about over some beers. It wasn't meant to be offensive, but you have helped me prove a point to someone
  20. Ignorance is bliss by the looks of things
  21. Whats the point in trying to explain, you've already made up your mind like usual. Operation Paperclip
  22. I learnt a while ago to keep experiences/opinions of that nature to myself. If you mention anything thats not "normal" in society, then you are straight away regarded as loopy. The best way around it is to not care what other people think. Thanks for sharing Cricketman, maybe one day people will actually open their eyes to find out that the reality they think they live, is a total lie. *awaits flame like replies*
  23. With approx 100 billion stars in our galaxy (The milky way) and 100 billion odd galaxies in the "known" universe, with each star potentially harbouring planets much like our own solar system, it would be naive to think that we are the only intellegent life in the universe. In saying that, the Milky Way is on the outer edge of the universe, so its possible that the distances needed to travel to find other life is too far (by our current understanding anyway) Theres also huge potential that we have been visited already, but we're kept in the dark about it. Doing a bit of research from WW2 onwards brings up alot of evidence supporting this.
