    The What's Up? thread.

Just found some really cheap stainless steel mesh - $14.00 plus GST and postage for a 100x30cm 3.4mm sheet from these guys; http://www.xcluder.co.nz/fencing-mesh-sales.html I'm going to get two pieces :bounce:

What sort if media does the SunSun come with? Remember that with the Eheim filter you are also paying for really good quality filter media and accessories like the double taps (which are extremely helpful). IMO good quality media > capacity Also higher flow isn't necessarily better, because Sophia wants to keep small fish and they don't like too much flow

Just remove the filter! In my experience internal filters suck anyway (and I mean suck as in preformance compared to canisters, ease of maintainance, and they also suck up little fish). And they also take up room in your tank. An Eheim Classic 2213 with hoses, double taps and Eheim filter media only costs $180.00 and will last for a very long time and you can easily put a sponge on the inlet to stop small fish getting sucked up. But the flow isn't that strong anyway. I have one on the tank with my Licorice Gouramis and they don't have problems with it and they are very tiny!
  5. Yeah I must admit that they are a bit ugly in a planted tank, but it is still pretty cool that he is having success with them. In the thread he said that they are breeding in there and that he has lots of fry.
  6. I don't think that they were added just for the photo. Although he did end up removing them and put cardinals in the tank instead
  7. I think the layout is quite cool in this tank, but look at the fish! Wow http://www.barrreport.com/showthread.ph ... phone-pics
  8. Imageshack is good. After 500 uploads you have to pay a certain amount or you will lose your oldest photos when you keep uploading, but I just created a new online email address and made a new account

Licorice gouramis need soft water and tannins. Best kept in a species tank, or in a tank with other peaceful fish that will live happily in the same conditions e.g. Ember Tetras. They are not suited to the general community tank or planted tank as most plants won't grow well in the conditions that the gouramis require. Crypts are probably about the only species that would thrive in a gourami set up.
  10. Cool I'll come and check it out  Just wondered is it the stuff that was in that smaller tank that you had running at one stage with the swordtails and longfin bristlenose? I think it might have been this: http://www.petstuff101.co.nz/Products/1 ... ravel.html
  11. That's actually what I was thinking of doing originally My only concern is that it might get wet if water dribbles down the tank... :dunno:
  12. I am not painting the bottom of the tanks. I had considered it, but those tanks cost quite a bit and are of awesome quality and I don't want to ruin them  Also it's extra work and I will have to drain them and move the fish out. I've just bought a $7.00 25L bag of Builders Sand from Bunnings. If it is no good for my aquariums, mum said that she'll buy it off me and use it for the garden  I'll come and have a look on the weekend then Caryl. Thanks so much

No I don't know what they actually are, but I will try to find out Definitely not deissneri though. They have a spike/filament coming from the middle of the tail (kind of like the center extention on an Emperor Tetra's tail).
  14. About 2-3cm to cover an area of 50x45cm. Do you have any spare of that dark gravel that you use in your planted tank? If so that would be ideal

Yay my Licorice Gouramis have just arrived! :happy2: They're not Parosphromenus deissneri however. I read an article about Licorice Gouramis and Parosphromenus deissneri has a big spike at the end of the tail, and mine don't.
  16. Thanks guys! I will try and get some sand then So far, I've bought sand from Mitre 10 and from Centaland and in both cases the sand had bits of clay all through it, making clear water impossible We have just had a new Bunnings built so I will go there and check out their sand  At the moment they will have to put up with the bare bottom tank. I had to move them out of the 140L because I wanted to release the male cacatuoides from the net breeder.
  17. Hey everyone, I only have enough gravel to put in to one of my breeding tanks. Apistogramma trifasciata will go in one, and Licorice Gouramis will go in the other. From what I have been reading about Licorice Gouramis, it is important that they have a dark substrate. So I am going to put them in the tank with gravel. Both tanks have white polystyrene underneath, which of course will reflect a bit of light upwards in the tank without gravel. Will the trifasciata be okay in this tank, or should I look at getting some sort of substrate? Thanks, Joe
  18. I think 75x45x45cm (140L) would be nicer. You get that little bit of extra width and height but it still doesn't take up too much room and it wouldn't cost too much
