  1. hi henward ammonia comes out of the back end of the fish, poos and wees the gills are used to take in oxygen from the water that is passed over them fish can drown when there is no dissolved oxygen in the water or the gill filaments are coated or collapse ie when they are taken out of water increasing the surface disturbance in the tank will help to increase dissolved oxygen in the water

  3. good thing about the forum though is there is usually more than one person around to do a correction
  4. it may not be your problem but a few years ago i had the same situation with a tank i was running we tried everything with no success, we eliminated every cause one by one until we were left with no reason for fish dying eventually i stripped the tank and changed the gravel and never had that problem again could only come to the conclusion it was the type of gravel we were using good luck

  9. we have had adult muscovy ducks taken on our pond, personally witnessed. Haven't managed to catch it yet to put in eel pool. at a rough guess, seen in dark by torchlight, it is 2metres and about 10 - 11kg
  10. if its the thread i was thinking of the aro was small and the person was advised that this could only be a temporary measure there is a lot of knowledge and experience within the forum members and sooner or later the right advice is given by someone to any questions on here as you have said some people should read books, but some people have trouble assimilating the info in books or they need a bit of reassurance. as Caryl has said even books contain conflicting info, especially some of the beginner type books, good books can be expensive or harder to find. sometimes it is an emergency and the correct info not available so the forum is here
