  1. I work at Jansens silverdale and ever since we started doing the merger the whole company has gone downhill. Im giving in my notice of resignation this week becuase I hate the place so much. I never buy anything from Jansens and I don't recommend anyone does. Its supoorts their disgusting practices. For instance: -The main 920L tank was way overdosed with flourish excel and all the fish (100-200) died. The manager was more interested in eating her lunch then knowing about it. -The african cichlids are kept in conditions often bordering on acidic and there are often deaths. There are so many other things I get pissed off about but probably too many to list here. Grr! I hate Jansens!!
  2. My female guppy is currently HUGE. I mean HUGE. Her scales are slightly sticking out and I wonder if she has dropsy? What is everyones opinions? Is it normal for fins to stick out when guppies are pregnant? I thought so but as she has progressed they seem to stick out more. She is separated in a breeding net at the mo'. So whats the verdict: Pregnant or Dropsy?
  3. they are just eggs people! Count yourself lucky, none of my fish evere breed. ever. not even the guppies. ps. what about what your signature says?? You should give the eggs a chance.
  4. What kind or polypterus can we get in NZ? polypterus endlicheri endlicheri? polypterus dehlezi?? I wanted to setup a 'oddball' tank but was wondering what kind of polys we have in NZ. CAn you keep oscars with bichirs?? Thanks.
  5. I have one male blue emperor tetra that i got from hollywood a while back. It came with a white wormy looking thing attached to its front bottom fin. In the past few months it has migrated to various areas on the fishes body each time making that part swell up. It was first on its fin which made it all bent, then moved to his left eye which made his eye MASSIVE!! Currently its on his lower lip which is now also HUGE. Each time the part swells up, it looks like there is a little white worm or something contained within the swelling. It doesn't appear to bother the fish too much as it is still feeding normally and still being very cocky but I just wanted to know what it is?? Thanks
  6. what would be the minimum literage for a tank with these fish?? Could such a tank be put on a second floor? What about the literage for just 1 senegal bichir?? Thanks
  7. i use a very long razor blade. but its kinda dangerous....
  8. tropical shrimp aren't avaiailable in NZ. (Thats NZ for ya...)
  9. I actually don't want a custom tank to be honest. I think they're too much hastle. If i went for the regal 100 could i have 1 senegal bichir, 1 butterfly fish and 3 silver dollars? (and maybe some other fish)??
  10. http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/prod ... .php?id=17 what about this one?
  11. http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/prod ... .php?id=18 what about this tank? Is this sort of tank ok for a bichir? And a datnoid?
  12. Our house is an old one... Its on wooden piles with a wooden floor with carpet on top. I want a tank that could hold some sort of a bichir and maybe another large type fish. I was hoping for it to be a largish tank but I don't want it falling through the floor... What kind of capacity could a tank be within safe limits for my kind of floor?? My father would reinforce the area with more piles though... Thanks!
  13. what anti climax... why can the other posters see the pics but we can't!?! Is there something im not being told!?!
  14. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 385014.htm I didn't think we had shrimp for tropical in NZ? Are these the native ones that die in any aquarium cold or tropical within hours? I know there are a variety of freshwater shrimp but I thought NZ didn't have any of 'em? :-? I wonder if this is legal...
  15. Im not sure right now... Im going to japan in december for 2 months and im not sure i want my parents to have the responsibility of taking care of some very expensive fish and coral... I have a 100l tank with freshies at the mo' so i think ill convert that tank after my holiday. Could an anemone be kept in a tank like that? It opens up my fish options a bit.
  16. my native banded kokopu loved to eat both of them.
  17. When you say dottyback, do you mean the banggai cardianal? or the royal gramma? I love them both but if it means having a healthy tank i can go without... Would a clam be ok in a tank like that or would i have to pass it on to someone else if it gets to big? How do you feed clams?
  18. what are we looking for? am i missing something?
  19. I think I have my plan. I will run a protein skimmer (Ill find the best one at the time, or if anyone could give any suggesttions for a great quality model for 30l) and ill run a small filter that will take the solid waste out of the tank. Ill also run a powerful light enough for the clam if the clam is suitable for my tank? What model heater would be good? The fish/invertebrates i want are: 2x percula clown 1x bangaii cardinal 1x royal gramma 1x firefish 1x pink coral shrimp 1x cleaner shrimp 1x starfish 1x clam (not sure what type, sugestions?) Coral: 1x Torch coral 1x sun polyps 1x bubble coral 1x zoanthids 1x mushroom 1x pompom xenia What does everyone think about this? Are these good combinations? I got all of these things off nano-reef.com and they call these organisms: "nano reef safe". Thanks very much
  20. awesome, you guys are great. I now have a rather good understanding. Asking questions is the best way even if you do sound like a major newbie...
  21. Im sorry cookie extreme I wasn't aware this was a forum for only experts. Ill find somewhere better suited to my oblivion. Anyway, I rang HFF in Albany yesterday and they advised me that no corals could be kept in a 30 litre tank only one fish or two... I don't know how correct this is though becuase Ive seen at least 3 or four small soft corals in a tank that was 2 gallons. Are small corals like mushrooms a viable option.
  22. What is liverock and what does it do for the tank?
  23. great thanks, i think thats what ill do. Can i run a protein skimmer in a tank like that? Do corals/shrimp/fish need supplements?
  24. Thanks everyone for your great help. I'll do some research and keep you updated. I think it may be a viable option if it is maybe one fire goby, 1 shrimp and a few soft corals? Thanks Jamie
  25. I have a new tank which is about 30-40 litres and I want to put something interesting in it... I would really love marines but thats not an option. My other ideal would be a silver dollar or two or three? I have done some research and concluded my tank is too small. I think? No, wait! I have just remembered my ideal fish for that tank would be about 3 freshwater or brackish puffers but with no one importing 'em thats also a dead end. What does everyone suggest? Can you run CO2 through a tank like that? What kind of brackish fish would be suitable? Thanks
