  1. Well as the title suggests, I wanting to set up my first saltwater nano reef. I'm completely new to saltwater and I don't know much... But I'm keen to learn! The tank is about 30 litres or nearly 8 gallons. The dimensions are: Length: 46cm, width: 25.5cm and height: 25.5cm. Its a good size for me to start out I think. I was wanting to put 2 clownfish in the tank. How about 2 common clownfish (amphiprion ocellaris) or 2 percula clowns (amphiprion percula)?? I don't really mind what fish though.. What are the best soft corals or anemones to go with these fish in this size tank? I would also prefer to keep some shrimp of some sort... I have a waterfall type filter that processes the tank well. It has been used for freshwater, can I use it with salt?? WHat are the best substrates to use in peoples opinions and the best salts? Is the introduction of fish/invertebrates/corals/liverock staggered? What size heater would be good for the tank? temperature 26 degrees right? Do I need a protein skimmer? What do they do? What is the best lighting and light tubes to use on a nano reef to give good colour, algae growth? Is there any other equipment to use on the tank? I think thats all... sorry for the pile of questions... Thanks very much
  2. my bn has a really bloated tummy, i hope he doesn't kick the bucket...
  3. All i have to say is ZOMG people get so hot under the collar. Live and let die is what I say!!
  4. No plants? I think i might cry! Anyway I prefer the latest fish anyway!
  5. we have three of these in jansens right now being sold as eel loaches
  6. Hey everyone, I bought a cool glass cutting tool called "one da tool" from fieldays up in mystery creek. This purchase has now fueled my desire to make my own tank!!! I have claculated what i want- 30cm x30cmx30xm which is a 27 Litre cube. Would it be easier and more accurate to get a proffessional to do the cutting for me?? I will silicone it by myself(all ideas on siliconing would be hugely appreciated!!) When the 30cmx30cm plates of glass are cut, do i have to take into account how the glass will sit against each other?? (either against the side or on top)?? How thick would the minimum glass need to be for this size and weight of tank?? Ill build a stand aswell. Thanks for your help in advance!!!
  7. About a week ago I bought a red tailed black shark about 6cm from Hollywood fish farm in albany. It looked really healthy in the tank so I decided to buy it. While driving home in the car he spun around on his side at about 1000rpm!! He looked like his back was bent inwards eg. head closer to tail. when i put him in the tank after climatizing he did his little spinny thing smashing into all the discus... (the hff guy told me the two would be ok together). And ever since he has been in my tank, he has swum around like he has no control over his fins. He swims upside down, gets blown around by the filter, get caught in the plants, crashes into the glass and gets stuck in the driftwood. He a real weird fish. I try to feed him his shrimp pellets but my adopted pet ramshorn snail eats it all. whats wrong with him??? He's a cool fish but i think hff ripped me off... what should i do???? Thanks
  8. ok thanks everyone. I think Ill stick with maybe an oscar or two...
  9. Heya everyone. When we move into our new house I want to upgrade to the AquaOne Aqua grande which is about 300l or 1.5 metres long. I wanted an arowana, pleco, clown knife and maybe an albino oscar. Can these fish be kept together in this tank?? Also, I have only seen arowana and other large fish in aquariums decorated with gravel and driftwood( wow) This type of type seems pretty depressing to me so I wanted to plant some vallsneria or something to the back of the tank. Can these fish be kept with plants? and one last thing, is there any way to prevent drop eye in arowana or is it something that just happens? Thanks and sorry for the piles of questions...
  10. way to small for discus I think!?! I keep three small ones and the absolute minimum volume is AT LEAST 100l. But I'm sure your not an amateur. just make sure you watch their growth rates and move them to the larger tank asap.
  11. not rotorua, but hamilton. my manager hasnt said anything about when though. :-?
  12. I have just returned from a trip to Japan. The Aquarium shops over there are incredible!!!!!!!! They have heaps and heaps of freshwater shrimp. My favourite was the red bumblebee shrimp!!
  13. I get so many people asking me how many electric yellows they can put with their comets...
  14. If I bought one of these guys from HFF and they were in a brackish tank, would it be cruel to immediatly introduce them to my freshwater tank at home??
  15. I have been looking at these on the internet lately. They are sooo cute. I wanted to get about 4-6 maybe with some bumblebee gobies and put them in an AR380 tank. Can you buy freshwater puffers in NZ or even Auckland?? I'll probably go to Hollywood FF tomorrow and check it out... Has anyone kept them before?
  16. ive never had luck with long fins... I have one hardy little danio left and he thinks he boss (takes on my three discus and blue emporer tetra)
  17. Does the lid on the tank have hinges so it opens like a door? If it does, try to slip a wedge in between so that air circulation is maximised. If not, leave the lid off completely at night if this is practical for you tank. This will generally help alot with condensation as it usually builds up in enclosed areas above the tank. The light on top also contributes to water loss.
  18. How are bumblebee gobies in a community tank? any special requirements? :-? Are they nippy/aggresive .? Fish in Tank: 3 discus (small) 4 cardinals (down from 20 (angel)) 4 Harlequins 6 Black phantoms 2 blue emperor tetras 1 long finned danio (down from 5) 1 rummy nose (down from 5 (angel)) 1 baby bristlenose Thanks
  19. awesome tank, great set-up but is there a lid for those hatchet fish? I had some awesome ones but by morning, they were dried up little crisps on the floor... They are great jumpers.
  20. what about with discus? how big do they get?
  21. I was wondering If there is a species of puffer that can be kept in a tropical freshwater community tank. Ive seen them in hollywood ff but they were brackish water and very nippy little fish.... can anyone help??
  22. I've just looked at some books on the fire bellied newt and they're soo cool! Does anyone here know about these creatures?? It'd be really cool if someone could post some pics of their newt set-up or something. HOw much are the newts? $50? And what pet shop can you get them from?? Do the adults need any land? and if so what could I provide if 75% of the tank would be filled with water? What would their favourtie food be and how many litres would you need for two? Thanks
