  1. If you want as much fish with less attitude but is great to interact with, more rare and with better colour, then come and see my Chocolate Cichlids Mark Easy to house and IMHO easier to live with than Oscars. Also you dont get the jaw deformities and their colour improves with age not decreases. JMO Happy to have you come and have a look anytime. Navarre

  3. You need a MAF permit to keep these guys mate. Sorry but you will have to release him or failing that give MAF a call. Even with a permit you are not allowed to wild harvest...lol HTH Navarre

  7. catfish are not my thing I have them in my tank to add a certain ...omph...but have not tried breeding them for years. I have "normal" BNs where male has bristles and female mostly clean shaven but I also have a "pair" of GBA and both have Bristles. One has more and in a 'doubleish" row with many more bifications. The GBA have not produced where the "common" ones have. So,,,,, Do female GBA have Bristles? Thanks in advance Navarre
  8. Next you wil be telling us you want to be a countess? Or is that a clowness? LMAO
  9. without getting into who you should buy fish from ...or not...as that is a matter of opinion....! as breeders of fish I shall misquote you a line from an article from from a famous breeder of bull terriers "the abscence of a given fault does not nessecarily mean the pressence of the corrisponding virtue" he also goes on to say that "we as breeders are the very guardians of the breed." Sorry for the typos but I have opened the first bottle of this seasons apple cider for the first time tonight and it is rather good....lol I take this to mean that as a breeder of Anything i do my best to ensure that it is healthy and of a genuine nature and dispostion. this applies to my dogs ( boxtonandtenille.com) or my fish. this applies to all my dealings..fishy or otherwise. These are two different things in the realm of ethics ie are what i am selling to you what I say they are and are they what I am calling them? If i sell you a fish and it is not what I tell you then I will replace it or refund it This is different than if you come to my place and I sell you a M Intteruptus but it is really a Melanochromis of unknown orign even tho I have had it for a decade and it breeds true. These are your arguements here. I would buy a red flush off of one of you but not the other that is my choice but if I buy a fish from you I expect it to be breeding true and not other wise. It takes alot to admit your mistake but those that do so gain respect in the eyes of our peers and that takes a great deal of courage. What LA is suggesting is paramount to a register of purebreed fish and with the draconian laws enforced by MAF that will never happen and if it does then things will soon go the way of the various herpts that are here already appologies once again but I sell what I say I do and I stand beside my product...or I fix it if there is a problem. I am only as good as my word...are you as good as yours??? We are the gaurdians of our chosen breeds of fish we are only as good as them and visa versa

  12. Another problem arrises tho when you have more than one colour strain a good example is the Aulanocara Sp Marleri red =ruben's =red ( but orangey)= bronzy coloured fish Or hansbaenschi which has, with out a lie, 67000 different shapes and colour morphs But your points are taken you Strive for purity (no not that type the other one) and hope for the best And I see people asking for "pure" guppies...what is a "pure" guppy? One thats not crossed with a molly? Just thinking out loud..sorry. Nav
  13. Hi There, a medicinal drop is 20 gtts (or drops) per ml. you could go to a pharmacy or a gun smith or someone who reloads or maybe even a hydroponics shop and ask them to weigh your 20 grams of powder into a container and then mark the container. The next time youmake your brew you just fill the container to the mark. I dont think under dosing is an issue as varied doses are what would happen in some of the streams these plants can come from. It is regular OVER dosing that is an issue as we use a closed system to keep our plants in. I wouldnt think you would need to remove your platy sam as the idea is to balance nutrients not put them in in such a way as top be harmfull but it is trial and error. Hans has said less is more. thinking about this it would make sense to me to way UNDER dose and build the levels up. But as I said it is all trial and error and what works for one may not work for all. Navarre

  15. Great thread and great photos. I am very disapointed tho that you dont have a photo of my favourite exhibit at welington zoo The Blonde German vet off wild vets on TVNZ on Sunday Nights She is my favourite. Have to wonder If she would let me be the alpha male in her mating sys. Anyway had to comment just so that I didnt disapoint those that know me OHHHh so well. Great photos tho Keep em coming. Nav
  16. Yes you are right Maggots only eat decaying flesh. But they also excreate an enzyme that causes flesh to decay so when we use them (laval therapy) to debride eschar then we have to be very careful about how long they are in a wound. They are also a special type of larvae rather than just any old house fly....lol HTH Navarre
  17. I have discovered Dwarf Cichlids and the such so I am running s large stocking full of peat and a very large hand handfull or Oak leaves in my sump for this bank of ten tanks (600x 400 x 450) I have these on top of my pre filter and the tank return water casacades over them proir to passing thru the mechanical filter medium. Works very well for me If you like I have a dead in line filter housing that you could have for a small sum and shipping. Navarre
  18. Hi Caryl, My 6x2x2 is on a stand that has 600 (2 feet) of clearance UNDER the tank. I just have enough room to access my FX5 but I have to drain it to remove it as I need to tilt it to get it over the rimu footing on the front of my stand. If you didnt have to do this then it would be much more managable. I have found that I dont have to remove the FX5 that often as every now and then I do my water changes thru the drain on the bottom and this helps flush any mulm that has accumulated. I am using the FX5 in combination with a sump and pump but the FX5 is plumbed seperately and I have varying stock levels but mostly Big and Messy...lol I would also suggest you consider the FX5 inlet pipes( plumbing)as these require a small amount of clearance over the top of the tank and if using euro bracing would be something to consider. I have had no problems with this filter and WOULD recommend them as one way to filter a large tank depending on aqascape and stocking ( let me know when you are ready for those African or New world cichlids Caryl and I ll help you out) I know others have had mixed results and I have only compared thsi style of fliet to the more cumbersome Ehiem "bucket" sump and a true sump filter. 22. So story goes like this Weka like kiwi are devided in to geographical and DNA based groups( thanks DOC) in the late 1800's the Chattam Islands had eaten all the weka there so petioned NZ for a donation of birds 12 yes only 12 birds where shipped from Christchurch to the Islands in 1905. Now there are an estimated 60000 birds. It is theh only place in NZ where they are not protected and still make up a part of the diet. Along with Black swans which look like sheep on the islands but thats another story) in 2002 a "flock" of 14 birds where brought back and in 2005 a second group of 14 where also brought back to the east coast and it is the 2nd group which were established at Willowbank. They are ominivourus birds that are very aggo when they need to be males are slightly larger and have a longer beak and they have 2 very simple defensive mechanisms. Flight (or in this case run real fast) or spray offensive liquid poop South Island East Coast Buff Weka have been extinct on theh main land for some decades prior to the reintroduction from the Chattams in 2002 ish but Marlbrough Southland & West Coast Buff Weka are in declining numbers but protected. Oh and they are an aquired taste and arent as nice as Mutton Birds (TiTi) Navarre
