  1. Super crushed/ground flake is good.
  2. Oh yeah. Im a 1st time user of insofuria myself (shubs spawned a couple of weeks ago) I crushed the lettuce, poured boiling water over it and it sat in a warm place for 4-5 days. I found it didnt go green but a very weak brown. I just poured it in to the fry (not the lettuce tho). Dont really know how many times, but i did small amounts 3x a day. Did that for 3 days then went on to crushed egg yolk. I think the egg sack usually lasts 3 days..... Generally start to feed them when they are free swimming. If you can see them that is
  3. Hi Cam, i would suggest to place heaps more plants in your tank. The marbles are ok as they will let some of the eggs fall through so thats the 1st stage covered, but as ppl have been saying the fry are so tiny and really need plant cover. Java moss is good for that, do you have more you could put in? Even floating plants perhaps?
  4. LOL 8) Them from us.. thats a good one 8) Getting back to the subject, i have brought my 1st ever plants off that site, only because the lfs has a VERY limited and expensive selection. The trader told me they'd send it monday to reach me tuesday so it wasnt sitting somewhere over the weekend. Which i'm thankful for. Hopefully i'll see it tomorrow morning
  5. Sorry to hear about your fish, i can probably source some levamisole for you. How many mls would you need? I think we have some droncit around too if it helps. i have seen some in a drawer somewhere, but it was a while ago so no promises on that one. The trouble with the vets is not many, if any, know about fish. There are all sorts of rules they have to (or should) abide by when dispensing small amounts of products too. Let me know anyway.
  6. Yesterday i noticed my female dwarf gourami was hanging at the back of the tank an didnt come forward to eat. She was swollen in the belly quite a bit. I searched on here an other sites about it and most of the time came up with 'once theyve got a swollen belly, theres nothing you can do'. I was hoping it didnt come to that but this morning she was peacefully resting in the java moss. Everything else about her looked fine and i have had no other problems with her mate or others in the tank. I had been doing regular water changes etc. Seeing as CSI didnt turn up this morning i'll just put it down to natural causes
  7. Here's my shubinkin fry @ 4 days old. Started with insofuria yeaterday...1st time using it as i usually buy liqui-fry. Once i transfer them all from where they 'hatched', they will be going into a 60ltr in the shed - Hopefully eating egg yolk too. Little tip for ppl. Place a small saucer on an upturned cup (i use plastic pipe) so it's closer to the surface and feed your yolk over the plate. Alot easier to clean and they all learn to eat there.
  8. Awesome thanks for that. have just this moment found some piping from another tank and modified it to fit. Now i have a bubble wall. Amazing what you can do when you look outside the square.
  9. Good thinking... Will get the plumber onto it. (hubby)
  10. Changing direction is outta the question. It can only go one way. More plants are on the way as just filled it and trying to set up to get cycled and the rest.....
  11. Our new filter (that came with the tank) is very powerful and has a little sticky outty bit that you can adjust the air flow. So basically its either a strong current or strong flow of bubbles. I would like to know if theres a way to shut it off completley? Have planted some large plants along the back and they are constantly being pushed to the right. Have a pic... its the little bit to the right of the unit, with the sml bit of air hose above. Its an R3100, FLmax 450 L/H.
  12. Stimpy, i would be careful ..... cautious ..... open minded (Trying to find the right word) Asking questions at our wee LFS. I rang in for a price on a particular female fish and was told they dont sell them and they never have them in stock,,, 2 days later i went in and brought the fish in question  Probably the only time i'll ever admit that male knows more than female  .... in that shop .
  13. I can get a male blackmoore of breeding size and send it up to you if you want.?? I think they sell for about $5-6 here at the garden centre, Maybe a wee bit more. It'll cost $15 to send up to Auck's overnight. I dont mind doing it. Let me know.
  14. Cant really see if it has the males tuburcules [sp?] You say you want a globe eye male fish, do you want a black moore, celestial, or another kind? Black moores are pretty common and should be easy to find a male this time of year.
  15. Thanks Peanuts. The gourami i was looking at getting was the lace? Pearl? not too sure which name is used. And as they are only young, I thought they might learn to live together. I was also hoping to have a healthy ratio of male:female so everyone was happy. I have some type of plant in my tank currently that i pulled a few stems from my pond  and believe it or not, it loves the warm water and has grown hugely and starting to take over. Not that it will be nearly enough cover in the new tank but i love the look of plants and colour in the tanks. So that is my aim. Hubby likes ornaments so we will have to have a comprimise somewhere. I had the WCMM in a tub outside but will need the tub soon for when the pond fish start multiplying. Theyre gonna go crazy in a large tank. :bounce: :bounce:
  16. Thanks Caryl, Salt being just standard table salt, rock salt or epsom salt?
  17. Thanks for that. I might just look into getting the corys and not the gouramis.
  18. Our new tank used to be a marine set up, What would be the best way to clean it for fresh-water use? And what to use? Also cleaning of the filter. Bearing in mind the sun wont be out for a few days  I think i have the cycling sussed, use the existing water, un-washed stones & filter. And add the tough little guppies that live in my tank at the moment.
  19. As we are about to embark on a much larger tank :bounce: , I would like to have a few more fish in there than i have now. (2 dwarf gourami + 10 or so guppies) oh plus my pet ramshorn (named Red) that now has 2 babies. I really like the gouramis and wondering how many males can you house together. Am planning on having it well planted with hidey holes, caves etc. . New tank is 300ltr? just under i think. There is a neon and powder blue that i would like to have as well as my pair (that have not paired up) Also can pearl gourami live ok with dwarf gourami? (seeing as they grow bigger) I have intentions on getting a few corydoras too. In my smaller tank i have 5 WCMM, will they be ok to go in the larger tank with everyone?
  20. That all depends on the size of the bag. Obviously big is better, or should i say more space is better, for the fish and oxygen content. I have recieved 20fish per bag in a shopping bag size and they were ok. Most were around 5-6cm and a couple were bigger. But they were packed well and had enough water to cover them and plenty of air space.
  21. Sorry to hijack your thread, but I tried that last year and it just turned slimy brownish. ?? our paddock trough goes green, will this be the same? As in ... ok to use?

    Tiny Tanks

unreal, i liked the flower tube aquarium, what a neat centre piece for a dining table.
  23. Yes they winter in the ponds, I kept them in one together but just dont feed them until they start to get active again. I have seperated the sexes now tho and theyre in one each. I guess they'll be about 250-300ltr? Kinda like a bath shape. I have made shade cloth and netting covers to go over the tops too as the pollen from some of our trees gets in and fouls the water.
  24. ummmm.....Natural filter, the sun, plants, and me siphoning the waste every couple of days. My fish are those hard scaled kind  , no fancy stuff here, just fill up with the hose.
  25. Ok thanks Caryl, the others i have are those oxygenators from the garden centres that look like grass. But once the fish spawn and turn to eat the eggs, the plants are looking pretty thin.
