After collecting some awesome driftwood, Twan renovated the tank again for me. You can't really see the new wood's shape, but it kinda looks like a t-rex skull haha. It's got lots of big holes and twisty bits. Will possibly rearrange the java fern a bit more. It's gone all yucky as I had a brush with cyanobacteria. Not sure I'm out of the woods with that yet but fingers crossed. I've had pretty good growth with the Co2 (this is post-prune) but then I went and snapped my diffuser. Ughhh, feel like such an idiot. I haven't added any new fish yet. Actually, I have some kribs from Jen. I'm still hoping to get sterbai corys soon but have no money to spend on fish atm But at least my current fish aren't being as wussy as when we first changed to sand. They are actually coming out now! Might get a sword to sit in the middle of the rock pile.

I volunteered to work last year. But if I were a teenager I would refuse... In her case, she could say 'Mum won't let me work that day, sorry'. Or just refuse. Say there is already a family event planned. Did they only just notify her? Does it really matter if she loses her job? It's not like a 15yo needs it to support herself. She should be able to find another job easily, fast food and supermarkets have high staff turnover & hire teens readily.

I think hatchetfish are like... $20 each, so you prob won't want a shoal of them. + they just sit at the top, so although they look awesome there will not be a lot of movement in the tank. Tiger barbs can be aggro and need a larger school so the beatings are shared out a bit, rather than 1 or 2 getting all the bullying. A school of rasboras would look awesome, they look soooo pretty when they are nicely coloured and schooling.

Mama went to Hokitika beach but she says there wasn't much there. I didn't ask if you could have her piece yet... Only if you don't find something better. She suggested looking nearer the river mouths.

+ some of the fish you've listed can be territorial and chase and annoy the other fish. Bristlenoses are a great beginner algae eating fish, and danios/tetras/swordtails/platys are good peaceful community tank. Although it's always tempting to have a large range of different fish, many are happier and look better in schools. If it were me choosing out of that list.... I reckon personally I'd go with a bristlenose, 10ish small schooling fish (same type) and maybe 4-6 cories. And it sounds like you've been doing your research, but just in case... Remember not to add all the fish at once! Let us know if you need advice on how to cycle your tank.

I watch it sometimes. Last night's was about that fish that swims up urethras and spines itself in place so it can have a meal :lol:

If you make sure the Aquaone tanks are kept full you can't hear the waterfall trickle. And if the filter/airpump is slightly noisy, you do get used to it and it kind of acts as white noise and drowns out other noises. When I stay at my bfs, his filters are noisy but I think they cover up his snoring cos I don't wake up. Whereas at my house, with my quiet room, I usually end up with earplugs in :evil:

There's usually heaps of guppies on Trademe, way cheaper than pet store (cos they're crappy specimens usually) They breed constantly so you can have a everlasting supply of fry.

This is so true, we always had goldfish & we always had them in a 20-30L tank and we always did 100% water changes and had no filter etc. In hindsight, we did everything wrong with all our pets back in the day... But I don't think people can use ignorance as an excuse now its so easy to get access to nearly infinite resources on pet care. (The counter story to this is all the people I've met who say "I can't even keep goldfish alive, no way would I be able to even attempt tropicals!.... Suggesting if pet stores actually offered good advice and products they might make more money)

Was impressed when I visited Pupuke Aquarium Centre, they had a sign up saying something along the lines of "All goldfish deserve a large tank or pond. If you have a small tank, small tropical fish may suit better, please enquire"

What year level are you in? Are you sure they even want to know the glass info? Maybe empty weight = 0, full weight = weight of water only?? Make sure you put in all your workings, how you did the calculations. They want to see that you understand what you're doing, not just using a calculator on a website.

In Tauranga now. Going to LAs today! I love feeding farm animals hahaha. Went to Animal Antics yesteday, was pretty cool. was probably better than the combined pet/fish stores back home, had decent range of interesting species.
