Just checking that you have tight fitting lids on your tank. I lost several bn before I discovered that when they went zipping up the sides of the tank cleaning they went straight over the top. Found them all krispy at the back of the tank.
It wasn't an importer I was talking to about the fighters, it was the person I first purchased a male and female fighter from when I originally started breeding them. he said he purchased a new fighter and it was suffering from importers disease which then killed off all his fish. thats why I was wondering what it was
As the title says.
Was looking in the cichlids section and the word 'virus' came up. Last week asked someone how his fighters were going and said they had died of 'importers virus'.
Wondered if this was a specific term or a general saying when no one knows.
Not sure if I've posted this in the right place, if not can the mods move it please.
just a slight word of warning - just watch the male fighter and male gourami in a tank together as they don't always get on. It depends on the individual fish but make sure you are able to seperate them if the need arises.
always have a Q tank for new fish,
spend the money to have a decent filter system,
do your water changes properly,
don't let someone who doesn't know about fish feed them when you're away!
I have observed that when I have put males in my tanks with females they do tend to nibble at the males tail and fins, just little by little unless the male has somewhere to take refuge. Its really a case of introducing gradually or putting him or them in a container where they can see each other first. It also depends on their personalities.
Fluffypants - did you go back to the shop with him and what did they say/what did the other fighters look like?
Don't know what it is but it shouldn't look like that - a hernia perhaps?
Not being smart but looks like some sort of rupture. Was it there before the females were in with him? Some males show what looks like the ovipositor on the female but they are only a small dot/tube, that looks swollen.
if you're really worried try placing a mirror where he can see it or put one of your females in the tank inside a sealed container so the water doesn't mix. i'd leave him for another couple of days before worrying too much. what did he look like at the shop. my males in tanks by themselves lie around all day, in fact one of them lies on his side quite a bit.
I've run a fluval 4+ for several years and seems to do a good job. Has an indicator at the top which lets you know when the filter is clogged although the slowed water flow lets you know anyway.
He's probably been in quarantine for a while. Be patient - all fighters have different personalities. Give him space and time to settle. Watch from a distance until he gets used to people and movement. My fighters in the house are used to people, but when I walk into the shed where my breeding tanks are they spook the moment I come up to the tank.
How long have you had him. Remember that his life so far has been pretty much all spent in a jar or small container. He will take a few days/weeks to adjust to life in a big tank. I do find that my male fighters alone in their own tanks do tend to just 'hang' there for the majority of the time. As long as he is eating don't panic yet.
