  1. Am helping the bio teacher where we live create a decent sort of environment for a short finned eel. The last 3 he's had have died imo because theres not enough water flow and he doesn't clean the tank, filters etc out enough. What was your setup like Hans? My hubby is the budget holder so he's put about $800 aside for it. The department has a 4ft X 2 ft x 2ft tank I think. Theres also a power head but we'll need to get the rest of the stuff.
  2. Some update pics - fry are now 5 weeks old, have 34 of them still. Some better quality than others but some definitely looking like dad with good long rays. Growing pretty slowly though - between 1 - 1.5cm at the moment. The second spawn with the same female were eaten. The patinum blue I purchased lived not even 48 hours! Dad again - he's had one more spawn with a yellow ct female but not sure how many fry at this stage (not many though). and a couple of the fry
  3. duh - I didn't realise there was a page 2!!!
  4. Get a hose and use it to squirt the water through the intake to get the flow running, then take the hose away - gets a bit messy though as you have to have the intake under the water still as you flush water through.
  5. microworms are easy to look after - as long as you have oatmeal, yeast and a tiny amount of sugar + a starter culture. If I had one running at the moment I'd send you a tablespoon or 2 but I don't. Crush the flake right up and only feed a tiny tiny amount for a few days as well as the liquifry. They may start nibbling on it but be careful it doesn't foul the tank.
  6. just been looking through this post as I am needing to make some sort of banking area in a 4ft tank for keeping an eel in. did anyone have problems with the types of paint they used and now a few months down the track what does it look like.
  7. I also have a steady supply of adult and young fighters if you are interested.
  8. They really need microworms and bbs when they are young. They will eat finely ground flake when they are older. By really small what size are you talking about?
  9. Looking for assistance with the setting up of an aquarium for native eel. Does anyone keep these, I don't need step by step instructions, just some idea of what the set up should be and what sort of filter size and water flow is needed. Thanks
  10. Hmmm, yes I think I shall have to set up a tank for killies. I've just been given a nice little tank and would hate to waste it!!! What should I start with?
  11. My fish don't seem to eat the frozen brine shrimp, imo it just seems to make a mess.
  12. I feed tetra colour bits and frozen blood worms. I stay away from feeding beef heart as my tank is planted.
  13. I try to keep to the one male per tank rule with my adult fighters. Its rare that they go for the outright kill but the strongest male will rip the other males body and fins more often than not leading to ones death. You can keep younger males together - I have had up to 100 4 month old males in a tank with no problems but they were from the same spawn and had never been separated. I normally keep one male in each of my females tanks, with up to 30 females. He's usually fine, sometimes they will nibble at his tail. Females also can fight with each other, but nothing serious and I find they do this more often if theres only a couple in with a male or if theres a storm front passing overhead. If I have only one male and one female together I find they spawn every 3-4 days which is not good for them. Its really up to you and the individual fishs nature. The more plants and cover you have the more peaceful your aquarium is going to be.
  14. I sell on tm and what it costs me is usually more than I charge, dependant on the number of fish sold.
  15. Depends where you send them from & to - some fish from Auckland are flown straight to the SI, sometimes they are trucked to Palmy North and flown from there. I use NZ Couriers and they deliver overnight to SI.
  16. all I will say is that obviously the tm admin team don't think so. 'nuf said.
  17. lightly off topic - but I never knew until today that that part of tm existed.
  18. I might join the 'blacklist' club as well
  19. letting you know - i have them but am struggling to get them off and onto my computer  will keep trying
  20. email me the pics and I will post them for you - any pic is better than none
  21. keep an eye out on tm as occassionally they are for sale at less than that and also on this forum.
