    New discus

I have two new discus to add to the existing 4 in the tank. Heres some pics (bored nothing to do). Collected them Monday, the blue snakeskin is female, she spawned with the pigeon but he wasn't the dominant male in the tank. The white diamond chased him away and after 24 hours someone ate the eggs First two pics are my new discus. And Dixon - the hatchet pic is for you.
  2. I turn the hose on, squirt it in - enough for the amount of water I'm changing - and then fill it up. My biggest problem is remembering to turn my filter back on afterwards.
  3. should be tap fitting - looks like this if you haven't seen one before. Comes with either a plastic or metal thread to fit onto your tap mixer. Metals better, lasts longer. You clip the hose onto the side piece and stick the other end into your tank. To fill turn it on, to empty twist the bottom part of this and it will reverse suck back into your sink (I just let it drain into the garden).
  4. they were eaten last evening but I didn't see who did it! Just as well as I don't have any spare tanks at the moment and don't know if I have the time to deal with raising young discus. Maybe if I get rid of some of my fighters at some stage I'll give it a go. For sure she'll spawn again and if so hopefully with the dominant male. He's a white diamond.
  5. have they got their ventral fins.
  6. I'm keen - will have to see if I can go.
  7. Is that the Kumeu A & P Show or a car show?
  8. You'll need polyboxes - I get mine from Barnes Plastics, Church St, Penrose. Boxes vary in price from about $4 - $8. You might be lucky and get some from your chemist (mine sends theirs back), or maybe your doctors, or even the supermarket (good for big boxes). Decent quality fish bags are necessary and I always use a heatpack but its up to you. I use NZ Couriers - based also in Penrose - and rarely have a problem with delivery. I deliver to their depot late afternoon for the overnight delivery, as they only do pickup in the morning. As long as you make it clear to them that you know it is your responsibility if anything happens to the fish they will take it. If you ring they normally say no, if you arrive there its okay. I label the boxes clearly with 'LIVE FISH'. Make sure you put the delivery address and a daytime contact phone no. on it. They do not do rural delivery. Cost is generally $14.50 from Auckland to anywhere in the NI, and I think $29 to the SI. If going to the SI you will need to use a heatpack. These costs are for boxes under .25 cubic metres and weighing under 5kg. Oversized you need to double the price. Do not feed the fish within 24hrs of sending, I do not use ammo lock but I do make sure I have waterchanged that day or the previous day. Add water and allow for a decent amount of air in the bag. Seal tightly. Not hard to do but can be nerve wracking. I send the track and trace no. to the purchaser as it is up to them to do the chasing once the fish arrive at the depot as I am at work and can't check during work hours to see where they are. The worst I find is when the receiver does not let you know that they have the fish in hand.

    Discus Spawn

My new female has tonight spawned with one of my males in the community tank. She is solid blue, he solid orange. Suggestions, ideas welcome.
  10. I've had trouble every time I've sent val. It always ends up mush, whether its bagged or inside a plastic container. A lot of it depends on how long it takes I think.
  11. I know this isn't the answer to your question but HaNs has one for sale in the T & E section for around $390.
  12. I have about 3 tanks like that at the moment. It seems to happen after a biggish water change and goes away if the tanks are left in the dark for 2-3 days.
  13. Not much help but I do know that they can cause problems in tanks and I believe they are known to attach themselves to the side of discus.
  14. thanks - I imagine it will take most of the year to get what I want given that you have to wait at least 4 months to breed from each batch. I am really pleased that I have managed to get hold of nice males from people up here in Auckland as one can't really keep inbreeding.
  15. Just checking that you know that Endlers or Venuzuelan guppies are or have been available in shops over the last few months so it is possible that you may have some mixes.
  16. and heres my cambodian vt that I picked up yesterday and some of the girls I intend to use with the ct males
  17. I have decided to concentrate mainly on ct's for this year in addition to a few vts. I have been working long and hard over a few months to either breed or acquire some nice males to use - this has involved extensive culling - with my pure ct females that I have bred myself. The females will be four months old at the end of this month. Heres pics of what I have - the yellow ct male and the blue/yellow platinum ct male are still too young. I am desperately searching for quality blue ct and vt males so if anyone knows where I may fine one or has one that they are willing to sell please let me know. Also if you see a platinum red ct in at your lfs I would love to know. Thanks My two cambodian reds My young yellow ct male and my platinum yellow ct male

  19. been eating boysenberries had they
  20. I don't know if yours will be the same but my plantlets send out shoots at a much smaller size than the original plant. Only one of my originals grew huge, the others are still small.
  21. That will be why my big one hasn't flowered. Its 60cm tall and the stems with all the plantlets on them are up to another 120cm. They grow horizontally across my tank. I've been cutting and taking the plants of to replant. i
  22. They're nice angels. The parents are lovely.
